Hi Guys
Hope you all have a great New Year. I have had a question asked of me from a Scottish fella. I have never heard of dark visors being illegal but who knows. Here is the question he asked has anyone got a legally correct answer.
"On a side can you tell me if tinted/dark visors are legal when used on roads in NZ. They're illegal here but are generally accepted if used during daylight hours".

Yes they are completely legal . There is no rule about visors in NZ. Whether wearing a tinted visor at night is wise is another matter.

I guess a visor falls into the same category as sunglasses - and you can take them off at night if you have to.

I have imprinted on my tinted visor "If tinted only legal for daytime use" or something like that (Dont have it near me to check the exact wording). The clear one obviously came from the same mold as it has the same wording on it.
Ive never had any problems though.

You can almost certainly guarantee that some smart-arse SafetyNazi bureaucrat somewhere in Noo Zilund will wake up one morning, and suddenly realise there's no law regarding them, and institute one forthwith, if not fifthwith.
Think about it: there's been a steady but relentless progression to replace personal responsibility and commonsense with pointless and pathetic laws to protect the retarded members of the population from the natural consequences of their own stupidity. :spanking:
So enjoy your freedom to decide for yourself when and where to wear a tinted visor, while you still can.

Please leave the Labourite party out of this!:first:
In the Banana Republic of New Zealand, we cannot afford the luxury of an ozone layer. The consequences of this involve immediate blindness if you walk (or ride) outdoors for longer than two minutes without sunglasses.
The wise rider will wear a tinted visor and sunglasses underneath.

Speaking of tinted visors, are they polarised or UV resistant or whatever like good quality sunglasses, to stop your eyeballs getting melted?

Not sure if tinted visors have a UV resistance but I have always been told that you should never wear polerised sunglasses when driving and especially never on a bike because they do not allow you to see fluids, e.g. Oil, on the road surface.
Could be a load of shit too, but that is what I have always been told.

I love my polarised sunnies and drive with them all the time and never had trouble missing fluids

Same. Polarised FTW. No trouble with diesel, oil water etc. at all.

Yes, mine too. When I wear polarised glasses with my visor there are trippy shimmering rainbows everywhere, moving and combining and craaazy. It's impossible to ride that way, so I had to buy some non-polarised sunglasses for riding.

There are people who study the Guinness book of records to see what new records that they dream up.
So I guess there are stupid people who study stupid laws to see what crap they can dream up and sell to our gullible politicians to claim as their own contribution to societies pressing problems..
Case in point Harry Duynhoven's  latest rant on the road laws. Bloody idiot. John.

You mean the KBers who never miss an opportunity to rant about socialists, the nanny state and greenies, no matter whether it's related to the topic of the thread?

Polarised sunnies...mine actually make oil and diesel easier to spot and I really like the trippy colours that come in at my peripheral vision...like cool man!
However I now wear a Shoei Xtra sml and its uncomfortable with sunnies squeezed in so since the shop gave me a free tinted visor as part of the deal I started using it recently.
OMG! I will never go back to the bad old days of sunglasses with a clear visor. I LOVE IT! Now have FULL vision instead of having to crane the neck over the shoulder more cos my glasses frame was obscuring my vision! and not getting a sunburnt face anymore.
However I did discover how late was late enuf to be riding with it last Sunday... 9pm was pretty dark LOL!

Though I have seen some with stickers on that state they do not meet safety regulations with regards to shattering, so can only be used on the track (can't recall exact wording or brand). So I guess it pays to check, if you care.
Once some looney guy in Porirua accosted me when mounting my trusty steed and started ranting how the local cop doesn't like tinted/mirror visors cos he likes to see your eyes... :eek5:

Yes they are legal, however you may find your arse spanked if you wear one at night in front of the cops.... could be interpreted as a tad careless becasue you are limiting your visibility in low light. More likely only to be an issue after a crash rather than a topic of conversation on the roadside.

Why if you have it up? We are not required by law to wear eye protection in this country.

I ride with my tinted visor almost permanently. On the rare occasion, I will ride with a clear visor, but I have to be 100% certain that the entire ride will only be done in darkness, and no light. I got caught out one cloudy day, pissed down, sun came out, and I could barely see with the sun reflecting off the water.
More often than not, the tinted visor also helps diminish the effect of street lights and oncoming headlights on my night vision. With a clear visor, I find myself almost blinded, but the tint blocks a lot out. Yes, vision is lowered, but hell, you're not riding like the daytime anyway. Once your eyes adjust, you see plenty, and I have ridden through some very dark places.
I love my 2 tinted visors.

Theres nothing in the law that states that tinted visors are illegal. However that doesnt say that the powers that be wont change their minds and decide that we're dangerous with these! I got issued with one for work so dont think they would allow enforcers of the law to wear them if they were illegal.:Police: However if you ride with a dark visor at night and are involved in an accident you could find yourself charged with careless driving, just use common sense really!

I live in the country..... once I get off SH1 and head into the pitch black darkness it's kinda hard to see anything through my tinted visors out here! Ended up riding home with the visor up and must have eaten 50 bugs on the way home.

My comment was in respect of having the visor down.... obviously.
No there isn't a requirement, but ever been hit in the visor or eyes by a bird or a bumble bee.... not very flash at all. The bird almost knocked me off.
