K3 and I had the pleasure of riding with a couple of R1's the other day, a blue 07 and a bleck 08.

We did roll on's in every gear, what would be your guess as to which bike come out on top? (All on our closed private road, etc etc, so on and so forth.

K3
TRE,
2 bros M2 muffler,
K&N Air fliter,
PC III custom mapped.
Me on board at 92kgs.

07 R1
Stock Standard
Rider 80ish kgs?

08 R1
Stock Standard
Rider 130ish?

rollons are pretty much meaningless.

I respectfully disagree, roll on's are probably one of the most important criteria for performance on the road. How fast a bikes top speed is or how fast it gets to 100kph does'nt really mean squat on public roads at least.

Ever heard of a gearing change??

I suspect even a stock K3 would be quicker in in-gear acceleration.

08 r1 rider carves up k3 rider at trackday, and in the pits the two riders are chatting...
r1rider says "hey I hope the pass was ok?"
k3rider replies"oh yea it was ok, you were looking good out there"
r1 rider "thanks"
k3 rider "but my bike is faster in a rollon in top gear from 33mph to 116mph"
r1 rider "huh??" and wanders off to take some pics of his own bike.

My old 98 R1 (with a Yoshi can) would take an 04 ZX-10R and an 06 R1 in top gear roll on up to a point (about 200 kph) but after that they'd come past. Lower geared top gear and fatter midrange were my guess as to the reason. Now I've got an 06 R1 as well and I love it but sometimes you do need to downshift a gear or two to get to good acceleration (never really needed to do this on the 98). Being a good sportsbike is about lots more than just top gear roll on performance though.

Yup I agree there, but this is about the bike not the rider, I would be faster on a 08 R1 at taupo than on my K3, the R1 as it was is very flat down low where as my K3 pulls hard from about 3000rpm. I believe it would easier to get the power down smoother and sooner on the 08 R1, which now has Ohlins, and Vance hine's SBK cans...

The K3 - or you wouldn't have started a thread about it.
The GSXR has way more power in the low and mid range, but I suspect it would be a different storey if you did your roll on tests from 7 or 8,000 rpm.
But it really is academic as a measure of performance, when you're giving it shit, who uses the lower part of their rev range?

The yammies will lose, as they don't have any power under about 12k. By which time the gixxer would be long gone.

do i win a bottle of scotch!

Thats not to say tho, if both bikes were ridden properly then the yammies would piss over the gixxer; it's all about the power delivery and how you use it.

The K3 definitely has a stonkinger engine, but the 07/08 R1s handle shitloads better. Very sweet frame and suspension setup. I think almost any of us would lap faster on the Yamahahahahahas.

My old 1991 FZR1000B had better roll on times than stroudys last year superbike. According to this pole it makes it a better bike than any of those listed.

the (stock) 07 r1 pulled harder than the (breathed on) k3 in third from 120k on a closed private road,
thru the gears the r1 pulled away....
not by much but enough to claim it

 When you're clutching at straws I guess it's enough to claim it... :msn-wink:

Still tho it is rather surprising that a bike which is 4 years older really isn't that far behind (one bike length TOPS!!! in thrid gear, with a tail wind etc,etc.... K3>R1)

The most important thing is that the poll state's it's the K3 for the win.
