I can get a house in Hanmer for the 5th (tuesday) @ $130 which sleeps 13 & there is also the lounge
that way we can get away early ish on the 6th (wednesday) & be home by 7:30 ish

The molesworth is open at the moment and is actually reasonably green (relatively). I went through on the 30th. I dont see it staying open till the 6th Feb though cause guessing it will only take 2 or three weeks of dry till it closes.

No harm in organising the ride but get in touch with Doc South Marlborough before turning up to get through.

At this stage I'm not in for the ride.

Good point. When you go through the Rainbow at the Old Rainbow Homestead they give you a little info pack. The Dydimo is in the Clarence so not really and issue till you cross Island Saddle (you will know when you do). When going between Island Saddle and Hanmer there are bridge options at all the fords (generally upstream of the fords) - use them.

I'm definitely interested. I was hoping to find at least one other person to do the Molesworth and Rainbow with, so this looks like the best chance. I'll be starting a tour around the south around the 21st of this month, so that'd give me enough time to get up to Hamner by the 5th. How many are in so far?

We went through Moleworth 2 days ago. Ranger said there had been 20mm of rain, and they were hoping to keep it open for "another few weeks" so could be dodgy for Feb unless they get more. So start doing rain dances.

Cromwell > Geraldine > Woodend Beach > Hamner > Molesworth > Taylors > Blenheim > Rainbow > Hamner > Greymouth > Haast > Cromwell - 1,800kMs all up - very good - Rainbow's the best IMHO, even at $10 a shot.

The run down the coast was pretty damned good too - awesome place - pity about the seal though ...

lol... up Rainbow, down Rainbow one might think?
There are alternatives if you start going on the black top from St Arnaud and taking in Porika, Braeburn, Mauria Saddle, options start getting scarce after Springs Junction for a while..... but since the Rainbow is in season I'd go for that both ways.

Wife and I just went through Molesworth last Saturday 19th Jan; it was dry as a chip, plenty of dust. Hit Jacks Pass at 0845 and hit the tarseal in the Awatere Valley about 6 hours later; long way from Molesworth gate to SH1. (stopped for a brew up and a ratpack on the way.) Blue sky, big country- saw 3 vehicles over the whole of the Molesworth! Have to pat wife on the back who doesn't like shingle!#* and who last year dealt with a second dose of breast cancer and double mastectomy... tough as.
Stayed in Picton overnite then I went round Waikawa Bay through the Port Underwood Rd. back to Blenheim where I met up again with better half, who suprisingly had had enough of shingle. Port Underwood Rd was only about 50km, but surface was like Kazakstan; diabolical, bad corrugations, coarse shingle, deep dust on bends, narrow and winding all the way.
Finished up with magic Kaikoura coast ride back to ChCh.
One of those rides to remember!

Transalper

Just checking... have you done Kazakstan?
So if I nip up an ride Port Underwood Rd I can say I've experienced a taste of it too? or are you Exagerating? It is after all still only a road?

Welcome to the site, we have plenty happening at the moment so will be nice to hook up sometime or if you want to make or suggest plans for us we'll welcome that too.
Cheers

Good to hear your up for it. I got myself a posh Whipps rack for the WR and mighty fine it looks too so i can carry a 5L petrol can. I'm ok for around 180km before resorting to the jerry can. Hamner Molesworth Taylor's Blenheim is just a bit over 200 kms. That is service station to service station.
Blenheim St Arnaud only 100 km or so, St Arnaud Back to Hanmer on Rainbow only 120 km's or so....

Hi All,

Visited a friend of mine today and his partner has just today got back after spending a week at Molesworth homestead as a guest of the family there.

Unless they get a lot of rain, it's going to be closing this Thursday, 29th of Feb :weep:

But I'm still in for Hanmer the night before, as it'll be worth it just to get on the piss with Shrek :headbang:

Either way, if it does close, we can decide via consensus of those present that morning where we would head off to if MW is shut by then....

Have cancelled all work around that time, as sick of missing out on all the good rides you buggers end up on

Looking forward to catching up on the 5th

They said that it is highly unlikely (but still possible) that it will be shut next week. So still semi good news on that front.....

They change their minds like or with the wind so I wouldn't get to stressed about wether it will be open or not, just make a plan B and ring them the day before you actually intend to go... this far out is pointless.

Here's the Hanmer Garages number... 03-315 7107

No chance of me being there for then.....

I just phoned Shell in Amberley ( 0 3 314 7060 ), and discovered for those going through Tuesday evening, a splash and dash is possible there up until around 9.45pm  ( Officially 10pm, but the girl said they usually shut at around 10 to..... ) and they are open at 6am Wednesday morning for those going up that morning..... :wari:

I will be bringing that can..... :2thumbsup

There is 24 hour fuel (card at pump outside hours) at the caltex at the south end of Culverden if that helps. Slightly more expensive fuel but means you dont have to carry too far. Also it is only about 35kms from Culverden to Hanmer so for those that are close but only just this makes Culverden a reasonable last fuel stop.

Dont rely on St Arnaud being open but there is 24 hour fuel at Murch as well (card at truck stop kiosk which operates petrol pumps closest to it outside of hours)

Have some friends who are hoping to do Molesworth later this month. Phonecalls to two diff people at the Marlborough DOC office this morning, both said they are reassessing this week. One person said likely to be closed and if so it would be closed for the season. Second person said will be looked at on a day to day basis.

Hope you all have a plan B if it's close, but if you get through, have an awesome time!!

And it's raining up here at the moment (heavily)...

Will salivate over your reports.
Am just coming to terms with handling multitudinous, occasionally mutinous 14 year old boys (in the behaviour management sense of 'handling' of course:spanking:), after a month spent sailing Lake Hawea and Te Anau and motorcyling round the lake, Haast Pass, Jackson river, Waikaia River...:2thumbsup
Must...conserve...energy...for a wee bit, till I get back in the swing at least.
Till then, keep me posted and I'll live vicariously through your adventures:violin:

I'm home too, after Fish & Chips at Culverden about 9pm.
We started the ride this morning at 8am and I'm sure we were told somewhere here it would be about 8 hours Hanmer to Hanmer... guess that means that our about 12 hour trip was a big day. Then we still had to get home.

Here's my pic of the long black mark. I highlighted it with some red dots but basiclly it starts with a rear wheel lockup at the guys down the road and finished where the bike is.

You want more detail... ha, well you just have to wait untill I wake up sometime tomorow or until someone else posts.
Needless to say it could have been messy.

Transalper
11th February 2008, 12:43
I think generally a chain shouldn't break if chain and sprockets (some front sprockets can easily be installed backwards) are properly installed and maintained, and not run in to the ground, as in replaced in a timely fashion instead of riding on chain or sprockets that are really past their use by date so to speak.
It's probably just a coincidence that 2 out of 3 chains I've seen break in the last 5 years have been on F650 Funduros. I think all were taking a hammering through either riding styles or terrain and all were worn out.

JATZ
11th February 2008, 19:07
with regards to A's chain, the rear sprocket was on it's last legs, and a bit of lube wouldn't have hurt. New set of sprockets and chain waiting to go on $235 so theyr'e not to dear
