Sitting here on the puter with a couple of woodstocks i hear on the news that the mother of a drowning victim up north has been taken to hospital suffering shock,WTF and how is that worthy of mention on the national news, how did they imagine the poor women would feel after losing her son,is there just not enough news and to much media that someones grief makes the news?

...is there just not enough news

Not at this time of year. Reporters call it "the Silly Season" because they have to cover silly things and make up stories from very small events.
Businesses are closed, so no economic news.
Courts are not sitting, so no crime/court-related reporting.
Parliament is in recess, so very little political news.

and to much media that someones grief makes the news?
Yep, that's what people pay for. The newspaper companies have done huge studies, printed a whole lot of sad stories one day, then a whole lot of positive stories on the same day next week, and the grim ones always sell better.

Apart from the front page: a picture of a pretty girl or child who has done something good on the front page makes papers sell more than any other thing.

You know the stupid thing is so far more people have drowned than killed on the road, well was a day or so ago.Can just see the coastguard giving out invoices for marine shit,i.e speeding in slow lanes etc, something which is never enforced.

A very valid point!

The country is running quite happily, without the kindergarten open for business.
Perhaps they should just stay away?:rockon:

I'm about 20m away from "the media"

I used to share an office with NZPA in Auckland. One Christmas we seriously discussed me getting paid to paint myself blue and run naked across the harbour bridge coz there was nothing to report. They couldn't get the authoriation for the expenditure so fortunately nothing came of that plan.

They seem to be tracking the road toll like rabid dogs. It's a bit sick really, it's like they're going for a record or something.
