Binned it on scenic drive.
Ouch.

First tight corner (headed to titarangi), the Lefthander marked at 35... came up on her fast 60 ish? peeled back to the 40's for the turn... sweet less than 10m from the exit.. well into the end of the turn no panic - having fun, the rear goes.

I'm on the ground sliding towards the gravel shoulder. Evey (my bike) is sitting in the gravel idling happily. Indicators, footpegs, mirror and lots of paint are lying all over the road.

Luckily I was riding with my new flatmate, he turned around and lent a hand. Pulled the RH side peg off and bolted it into the LH side slot backwards so I could still shift on the way home.

The worst bit is I DONT KNOW WHAT HAPPENED. I've run that road many many times, hell I'd done that corner once already on the day but we had to backtrack for gas. The only thing I can think of was the fucking chain grease.

I'd greased up the chain the previous night and what normally happens is I clean a big stain of grease from the bottom of the tyre where the shit drips during the night. This day I'd forgotten to pull out the brake cleaner and give it a scrub. What an expensive mistake. Ouch.

May not be that. A loose flat stone on the road...wrong place...wrong time...1001 things could have caused it. Watch road surfaces with care if you have time. REMEMBER you go where you look.
No injurys ??? What riding gear were you wearing ??? Is it intact ???FIRST off ???
GLAD YOU LIVED TO TELL US ABOUT IT. Bikes can be fixed/replaced

scenic drive can be quite dodgy, I binned my gixxer on the road when I hit a gravel patch ages ago. Really nice road but you gotta be ready for what it throws at you. Glad to see your still with us.

I live off scenic drive, in woodlands park. there are always bits of rocks and crap on the road, not to mention the slow drivers or cars that pull out of driveways, patches of oil are common.
If i wanna go for a scratch Huia is a better ride but no cell coverage as i found out when i ran out of petrol

Glad your still with us

Absolutely! Those Hyosung's come out of the factory with shit rubber.

Beats me why anyone would ride quickly along Scenic Drive or the Huia road.

It's all narrow as, residential driveways everywhere; simply the wrong place to do anything but pootle along. Those roads are more or less just suburbia. I always feel like I'm about to bang my elbows on the trees on both sides through the corners. Even if the road was closed I wouldn't want to cane it along there.

The road to Bethells Beach is a much better bet for a fang.

Doesn't sound like EnzoYug was riding particularly quickly, though.

If the stock tyres are still on the Hyobag, that's what I'd blame.

Aye - I was deep into modding. Luckily none of the bling bits had been strapped on or damaged! My shiny exhaust was still in one piece - good thing since it was my christmas pressie from the girlfriend!

Have to agree there!

When you take into account all the hidden driveways, gravel on corners, oil etc and then adjust your speed to give you that safety margin... you end up going through it at like 60k!!!

Wont go near that road in the winter.... all the moss on the road is like ice when wet!

were u on rear brakes into corner...because if you brough on gas after just been on brakes you might have spun it up ...you were going very slow to be honest.

i dunno i wasnt there you will have to figure it out for yaself....why are you taking 35's at 40 kph though :bash:

double it.:first:

Generally marked corners can be taken by a noob in MPH ie 65kmph corner at 65mph (they can obviously be taken faster!) but when you get to 35k corners... take em at 35/40k - especially on Scenic drive.

Im only talking from large touring bike perspective - small more nimble bikes on the other hand...

Nah, i avoid using brakes. Ever.
I was going fucking slow cause it's a bitch of a corner and Hyosungs are not the worlds best bike for getting deep with. I'm guessing from where I lost it - it was probably as I just started to pour on the power heading out... Maybe too much gas on the way out, with some gravel, and a greasy tyre edge? Someone said there are probably 1001 reasons... I agree. Still feels a bit useless not to know why but I guess sometimes shit happens.

I'm taking Evey in to the guys at Red Baron for an apprasial now - I'll let them give me a quote and if I can do the work cheaper myself I wont get the insurance company involved. Excess is $1,700 FUCKME! Plus the no-claims bonus.

Oh well... could be worse.

What needs to be done to the bike? Fairing repairs, bent handle bar, mirror, bar end weight and a clutch lever? Something like that?

Coming back from that run today...
The railway overbridge that crosses the road at the Ranui end - there was a bloody TRAIN (thingy) crossing over the road.
(Big deal - "so what" he says)
This train had some sort of "road sweeping" type apparatus attached, which then proceeded to throw fist sized bits of rock down onto the road...:shit:

Weirdest thing I have had to deal with - so far.

(we don't see many trains in D'Auckland you know...)

Motorcycling is dangerous...and not just the ON road part.Over age 25 the rates are sometimes cheaper. (sometimes)
If your going to bin it, do a good job.

Yeah it's impossible to know unless you're doing a full on crash investigation style thing at the scene.

I'd put money on the gas/lean angle combo being the culprit and maybe hitting moss or shingle.

Chain lube maybe but I doubt it in the dry. The road would scrub that off unless you had a massive blob of it.

3rd January 2008, 22:45
Did you inspect the tyre, was there chain lube on it?If there was then there is your answer. You also probably gave it too much gas too soon.

I love those roads, perfectly suited to my bike. Or a motard. JRandom probably feels uneasy there precisely because of his bike; light little 250s (or RG150s) can have a ball there. You do need to keep your wits about you though.

One other thing I thought of was that many of the corners, especially the tight ones, are terribly corrugated. I don't know what GT250 rear suspension is like, but mine is absolutely pathetic in the damping department, and after hitting a few corrugations (unloading the rear wheel) even my 26hp torque-monster will have the tach needle dancing as the tyre tries to retain grip.

Fun road, though.

Scenic Drive aint no playground.
The road and its conditions are bad enough without the driveways, shadows, cyclists and residents walking their dogs. Its also a favourite road for tourists, sightseers and some of the worst farken cage operators in the city.

Glad to hear you are OK. Could have been worse. Thankfully it wasnt.

Remember this time of year the tar can get very soft & even "runny honey" like in places.

Braking, corning or accelerating in it can be treacherous. A chap on his near new 990 KTM Superduke found that out on a similar type corner here in the back blocks of Taranaki last week. A lil gas too early on exit of corner, rear slide out & he high sided, all at low speed thankfully (as the corner was posted at 20Km/h), but even pricey tyres won't save you on that shit.

Winter = wet roads

Summer = tacky roads

yeah dude ive had similar things happen.

sometime in november..

fired up the bike....first thing in the morning and off to my parents place before work.

out of the driveway up the street.....turned right.....right again...all is going well.

came to a rounabout...i peeled off to the left of it so did not need the roundabout.....round the bend i though well i will hang off so i don't have to lean the cold tyres over as far.

so i hung off....leant it over.....

hmmm i'm knee down....i cant be that far over on cold tyres ahhh crap.

next thing i'm on my arse.

didn't even feel the rear start to go complete dry...cold tyres....slipped out bloodey fast.

at the end of the day shit happens.

but at the time all i could say was fuck.

as my bike slid away with tail section and indicators etc going in every direction.

and me having slid on my arse. now running after my bike...which is still sliding.

usually i never wore my one piece to work just jeans and a light jacket.

for some reason that morning i was like screw it and put on my one piece....

up i hopped and away i went....the look on car drivers faces was quite funny though having just seen a bike slide past 6 rowed up cars stopping half a metre from a roundabout.

cold tyres = evil lol

ok i'm done babbling meh meh fooking neow

I live up by Arataki on Scenic Drive and commute into the city. The section from Arataki to the village has been responsible for many many offs by bikes, cars and pushies alike. Recently there was a new car off the steep drop jammed into the trees on a weekly basis - lol. The corners are tight, many negative camber, loose metal, moss, oil and for some strange reason every mother fucker cuts on the blind corners. I slide the back end of my k31000 at least once a month - gives me the shits every time. Take it really easy on this stretch of road.
