View Full Version : Galfer brake discs- anyone used them in a race/trackday situation?

Hi, the single Brembo disc on the front of my Monster race bike has been causing me concern for sometime- not so much the disc, but more the fact that there was only one. I have had issues with brake fade at three race meetings. I've got another calliper, pads and lines but so far haven't had any luck picking up another disc.

At this years Nelson Port Races it all came to a head- fortunately it happened in the pits. I hopped on the bike at the start of the second round to find that the disc had warped/dished as it cooled, leaving me with zero front brakes, and no chance of getting them back. I was not pleased:angry2: Incidentally, I had been told that the OEM Brembo disc would eventually warp- that prediction was bang on the money.

So anyway, I can get my hands on Galfer brake components through my business, and I'm just wondering if anyone here has ever used them in a race or trackday situation. Any feed back will be appreciated.

I know of quite a few riders on the USGPRU forums (america) that run them on thier 125gp bikes with no problems at all.

If I were looking for a replacement disk, I would run one without concern

Awesome! Thanks guys, looks like I'll use them then.... as long as they aren't astronomically expensive;)

As an aside, I was told today that filling the resevoir right to the top on Brembo brakes can cause issues- as the fluid expands with the heat generated in a racing situation, it can cause the brakes to drag- to the point where it can cause a crash in extreme situations. This would obviously generate a LOT of heat and cause the disc to warp. My bike had brand new pads and a full resevoir, so this could be the cause of the problem.

All resevoirs are intended to have an air gap at the top, to allow fluid expansion. Big no-no to fill them to the top.

Most have an upper line don't they for this exact reason?!

I had to drain mine a little half way round the loop once as that exact thing was happening.

what I meant to say was- up to the full line. The recomendation I was given was to never fill it above halfway

I had Galfer wave disks on ny 97 750 SRAD, brought them new from cycle brakes in the states. They where awesome at trackdays seemed to get better the hotter they got.

Why not just remove the thin washer's from under the rivets from a standard disc to make them fully floating instead of semi floating? Its awkward but worthwhile. A trick from way back.
Also never ever run the mastercylinder full! Just ask Tony Rees why his brakes locked on going into Higgins during an endurance race..................
