Honda claims the new ‘Blade has been built to be not only better than the current model, but also to challenge for the honour of being the best superbike on the market. Honda has used the same engineering philosophy it applied when it built the original, all-conquering ‘Blade way back in 1992, and instead of just concentrating on sheer horsepower, has instead focused on power-to-weight ratio to allow the bike to deliver its speed. We’ve only got Honda’s word to rely on when it says it’s achieved that by making the Fireblade’s wet, and ready to ride weight significantly lower than the opposition’s, but there’s no doubt the bike can perform brilliantly on track. Only time will tell if it can lift the ‘best superbike you can buy’ trophy, but in the meantime there’s plenty to be had by having one.

Sounds like its not the amazing new superbike that many were hoping for and its uglier that helen clark first thing in the morning [<--finn told me]!! unless you want to spend shit loads on your HRC race kit??
I think I'm ready to stick my $$$$ on the fact that the Kawasaki ZX10R is back in the number one open class I have a bigger penis than you spot!!

The Fireblade will have to be pretty damned good to beat both the performance and civility of the class-leader, the GSX-R1000. But from my experience of it at Losail, I’d guess it’s just got a hell of a lot closer. Just like the original 1992 version, the 2008 Fireblade is one hell of a bike.
Sounds like its not too bad though, and the gixxer is getting uglier from the K6 version

I agree that it's odd and fugly in the pictures, but I'll wait to see it in the flesh before final judgement.
On the whole, though, it does rather sound as though the CBR will continue to be the boring member of the litrebike bunch.

A new rider on the team saying he 'really' likes the bike, how refreshing!

It's almost as if they've gone... right, we'll give them this awesome piece of kit, better than the rest... but we'll make it ugly as sin just to goad them... just to see who'll pick function over form.

The fairing has all that space below the windscreen making it look like it was designed for room for sponsors stickers and a racing number foremost with style on the road being a secondary consideration.

Saw it in the flesh at Philip Island. Didnt look too bad. Quite minimalist MotoGP look.

yep...Both I reckon.
I still reckon Gixxers will be the best off road.
Yamaha will still get voted prettiest.

Well at least Honda have made it look a look different unlike Suzuki with the Gixxers which by and large look the same since K5. You cannot say that the Honda looks like the previous model. In fact you would not know it was a Honda....

You reckon we'll see a few on the Capital Coast Adventure Ride in April then with some knobbly tyres on? Sounds like the next challenge for Big Dave if someone will lend him an off road Gixxer.

Agree with Cowshit the 10R is the new king - almost 200hp, pity about the looks though. There are heaps of road test vids of all these bikes on youtube.
I'll still take a K5/K6 gixxer thou anyday.
A question: Does the new post 07 R1 handle differently to the 04-06 R1? I felt the 04-06 R1 handled like a whale compared to the 04/05 10R, 954 and K3-K6 GSXR1000's.

Eh what? The K3 was nice looked like a big bike and felt like one.
The K5 was so bloody low to the ground and the current one feels the same...
They all look quite diff though - with the K5/K6 being the best of the lot.

thats a interesting opinion re the R1...I don't openly like R1's tobehonest...but I have to say stock R1's have to be the best handling jap bikes I have ever ridden..very nice and very easy to carve through corners..easy direction changes..chassis gave plenty of good feed back.

Hey mate,
Rode an 04 R1 and a 06 R1. I distinctly felt as though the R1 had the heaviest front end and required more physical effort to move compared to the 04/05 ZX10R and the gixxers, K3,4,6.
Nothing wrong with it at all. I just felt that the R1 had in relation the "laziest" handling and the K3-4 and 04-05 ZX10R the most naturally flickable handling.
Have you ridden the new R1? Does it "feel" different to the 04-06?

Could have been a setup, tyre choice or tyre pressure thing, maybe?
The 07 R1 is definitely a step up, though. You should look for a ride on one sometime. A very easy bike to ride very fast.

I'm not riding a bike, cos then I'd end up buying the damn thing. Besides I don't have any gear. Leathers cut up by ambos, helmet is a joke, boots toe tips and gloves wore through the leather, damn ambos even cut my back protector straps (good on them though).
On a self imposed 1 year curfew, hoping I grow up in the mean time, will probably start off on a 600 then trade up to a thou once I can lap Eastern Creek under 2 mins.

All round road bike ? Hard to beat the CBR IMO.

Shuddup you...the gixxers have always looked a bit odd, espec around the nose.
Most of the Jap bikes look like the designers had nightmares as kids and are getting their own back, anyway, although a '98 R1 in the Red/White colour scheme still looks good.
I'm lusting after an 848 Duc, in Pearl White....the first ones are on the roads over here.........mmmmmmmmmmmm

Looks Ok to me if you are into your race replicas.
Prefer them naked myself.
I was looking around bike sites on the web the other day and came across a English thread where a young chap posted 'I don't understand these new naked bikes - they look unfinished without fairings' NEW - ha I remember the GS1000s causing a stir when it came out (1979 I think) with a factory bikini fairing - that was radical! and then there was the Katana (proper one).
Honestly they all look a bit the same now days.....

Yeah in a subtle way but you knew they were Gixxers.....the Honda does not look like a CBR

I for one welcome our fireblade based overlord!
But seriously, why does every review of a fireblade ever reference the original model? Well, I think I know why; a bike that is fast and a bit difficult to ride is fun. A bike that is has some sort of deficiency is more fun.
I reckon it'd get better reviews if the steering damper was removed, the cams got lumpier and the baffles just accidentally 'fell out' of the exhaust real easy. An engine that gives a bit of a kick and a bit of a twitch coming out of a corner under power or changing direction is fun.
Who cares if it is a bit slower as long as you are having fun and wrestling it a little bit?

The new Blade looks complete shite, I can't believe the designers got away with it. I'm not happy with the humongous trombone sticking out the side of the new ZX10R either, until you do this...pictures attached.
Then it's a superb looking motorcycle!
