just wondering what peoples opinions on bike alarms are. Im looking at getting one in from the USA, has remote start, immobiliser and a few other features builts in.

Do they do much or are they just for show?

I have never bothered with an alarm or chain/lock.

The immobiliser yes, and most new bikes come with that I think. Remote start, why? I'd have thought that'd have been more of a security risk than deterrant. As for the full alarm/siren I guess thats up to you really. Personally I wouldn't bother with a siren.

I want one of those ones with a pager. Nobody listens to sirens, the thief can just keep on doing what they're doing and nobody gives a toss..... with a pager on the otherhand... somebody messes with your bike (maybe it's some kids jumping on it or something) and then I can come out with a large stick
:ar15:

YUP, gotta get me one of those

throw out the remote start, you would be better to get one of those proximity sensor thingy's that go off if ppl get within a foot of ur bike
wont scare off a determined thief but it will deter the ppl who like to get onto bikes and proceed to alter the mirrors, flood it and make them selves look like complete asses by going VROOM VROOM.
once i went to some gatheringthingylikeabbq and forgot to lock the steering of my bike and after a few minutes looked out the window to watch my bike being pushed down the driveway by a couple of fuckwits one of which was sitting in the saddle twisting the throttle going vroom vroom vrooooooom as he rolled down the hill and he wasnt even drunk at the time

i think these come with a proximity type sensor job. But it has a 120db siren so im thinking its gonna be kinda loud. There are some of those pager ones u mentioned available for around $90US, but they seem tacky and aimed at the japanese market (the pager looks like a tamagochi pet thing) but it only works for up to 500m in clear space i think...

haha - who was it that posted a few months back about a 100+ dB siren they had that went off one nite and when he went down to check it out he found a shoe attached by its laces on the kickstand :killingme

Hi mate,

On my car I have a dual immobiliser, back-up battery (has it's own emergency power source) siren with a paging system with 2km radius. I don't know how many db the siren is but if it goes off you cannot stand near it - as it literally hurts your ears. Also has a I think 1 foot proximity sensor. And the remote although it looks like a tiny cell phone it has a digital display indicating battery wear and a picture of a car which when the alarm is activated tells you which part if the car is being approached. Sounds very fancy - but only cost 199 - with 1 year waranty and another 100 for the instalattion was on special at wootons. Similar alarms from mongoose, etc are closer to a grand - plus another 500+ for installation.

Maybe you should give them a call and see if they got something for you.

NOTE TO THE PRO BIKERS HERE: What do you do for security - I just bought a bike - simple, cheap little thing - but now that it is "family" it is worth a million dollars to me. Some security tips -?

Wouldn't it be cool if your security system, instead of turning on a siren, it would release a cloud of poison gas, and if they were really determined and had a gas mask and the guy started to ride off, the seat would these rockets underneath that would make the seat fly sky high, and if the criminal knew about that stuff and avoided it and got away with your bike, you would have a self destruct button cause if you cant have it, NO ONE ELSE WILL, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

I'll take counselling again.

No mate, you don't need counselling. You just need to go to South Africa. There are a lot of top end cars there as thats where a lot get manufactured and it's also a country that ranks as one with the highest crime rate.

There are security systems - available for sale to the public which have electrocuted door handles. A flame thrower in the cockpit - yes an actual flame thower. And a metal stick that springs out in a chopping action from under the car under the driver and passenger door - press a button or activate it and any car thief gets their ankles broken or atleast banged hard enough to call an ambulance.

Sounds macabre but given the conditions there I would buy one without hesitation.

Jy praat as jy n bietjie van Suid Afrika ken! :ar15: :Punk:
I have to agree, one night while driving in Mowbray, Cape Town, I was "flagged" down by two "policeman" with torches. So I drove straight past them, and stopped about 500m down the road. They were just milling around, not policemen at all, but would be Hijackers! :shit:

The flame throwers were just coming out when I left. A small pedal above the accelerator pedal released plumes of "firey hijacker deoderant" :D  I would've given a thousand rand to see it in practice :ar15: :ar15: EISH!

Oh by the way people, if you go to south africa, and visit cape town, DON'T breakdown on the road between town and the airport, you WILL be robbed / killed, it's getting really bad lately :disapint: On my way to the airport while leaving the country to come here, a VW beetle crashed and rolled. A certain populace emerged from the bushes, opened the doors and robbed the people and just left, leaving them in the car, injured and upside down :pinch:

Oh, I've got some stories, I could go on for hours....

save your money and buy a disk lock with a "reminder" strap (= no embarassing disk lock reminder when you take off and forget its on)
the last two bikes ive have had alarms and (in my opinion) not worth the hassle and the fact of coming back to a bike with a flat battery.
plus most of the insurance compaines will not give you a discount for having one anyway.
you can get a disk lock for about 50 - 150 $ and a reminder strap is about 6$

Who would be stupid enough to take off without removing their disc-lock!?? I mean, I would NEVER do it the day or two after getting my sparkly new bike, oh no...  And I would n..e.ve...r crack my front fairing in doing so, uh uh  Ahh... experience, it's tough :argh: :done:

lol i thought about putting some kinda electrical current thru the seat or handle bars to do that sort of thing, i can just picture some twit coming up to do the vroom vroom thing and going, AHHH FUCK it bit me

All the same, im getting an alarm in from the USA coz its relatively cheap. I'll post details when i know exactly what it is. Got the remote start in all (just for show), and a few other features, but i aint gonna go for a pager system at the moment. but may look that way in the future.

Probably gonna get a disc lock with a warning device, and when money allows also a brake/throttle grip lock.

Anyone keen to help me with the electrification of my handle grips??? :ar15:

In South Africa, one guy got pissed off with people continually stealing his car radio. So... He bolted it in bigtime, and attached numerous big fish hooks to the underneath of the radio, just out of sight. He came back to his car, to find the thief well and truly "caught", still stuck to the radio. In the end, the owner of the car/radio got done in court, and had to pay the thief!

Have you seen those autotazers ?, They're like a club lock but when they get disturbed they have visible current flowing through them and give a similar shock to an electric fence... I'm sure it would be easy to get a similar idea going on the handlebars.....

I had one on the RF and will fit it to the Bandit soon. Everything helps, it needs to have an immobiliser as well.
A side benefit is that, if someone backs into your bike the alarm will warn you in time to inflict GBH.

Most theifs are dimwits, so I'll just stick a 'Beware of Dog' sticker to the side of my bike.

Just chain your dog to the bike. And only feed it when you leave for work/ride etc.

i reckon the brake lock with movement sensor alarm that locks the brake lever in against the go-fast twistie thing would be the way to go if you have to leave your bike - it's visible, loud, and responds to the bike being moved. my bike doesn't get too far away from me, and i live in a small town where everyone knows my bike, so i don't worry about an alarm.

this one at motomail hasn't got an alarm on it, but for $100? cheap visible security

Oh yip, sweet.
So lets see, an alarm with paging capabilities and proximity sensors, a disk lock, and instead of a remote start. Have a remote controlled explosive charge that you can manually disarm before riding. Got your napalm in the tank too.:devil2:

Muuuhahahahahaaaaaaaaaaa!

I always thought some sort of extending arm thing that punches up through the seat and thrusts a hand grenade up the arse of the would be thief... Although what if it went off accidently on your way to work or something :eek5:
