Yeah we've actually got 3 computer desks in the dining room area. 2 pc's for the kids and our one. Might get rid of one of the pc's as the kids don't use it much now. (not much runs on a 233mhz these days)

When I'm using a workstation with two screens, usually have code/whatever I'm working on on the main screen, and APIs and other documentation on the secondary screen. Very useful when you're doing work that's more complicated than the usual office-drone crap.

You're probably right. Ubuntu was too windowsy when I last installed it, and I don't mean how it looks, I mean how it's configured - via applet thingies instead of nice config files - and that's more Gnome's fault than Ubuntu's. And I'm still running Gnome. I'm being assimilated :(

Ya need Linux more than you think....I run 4 virtual desktops....one for web, one for file manager, one for media and last one has my email client on it....very clean and uncluttered
Thats one thing I actually don't like about Linux is virtual desktops and never use them... and hate the Windows ones just as much...
First off I don't see the point and or difference of pushing a button on a task bar to change too another virtual on your desktop to get to an open application when you can simply push the button on the task bar or icon in your system tray. Especially when I find it quicker using Alt Tab or even Alt Esc to select an open application, than trying to remember which desktop has which application open.
It doesn't really save any system resourses and really does the opposite as its an extra application clogging the system. Is it tidyer uncluttered desktop debatable
Each to there own and what they find easier

It really depends how these virtual desktops are executed. To me at least, to have different ones just for different programs does seem to be overkill.
However, on the flip side, by running programs in a virtual environment, you separate your software from your hardware, making the environment hardware independent. Long story short, thats a good thing, enabling much faster migrations.
dang... I should go to bed... :zzzz:

15th January 2008, 00:11
They're not virtual desktops as in virtualisation, Gremlin. That would be very silly.
I'm talking about virtual desktops as in the tiny lightweight feature (maybe 2-3kB -- yes kB, not mB -- of RAM) that has been kicking around in window managers since the late 80s. Here you go -- both of you sound confused -- wikipedia is your friend http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_desktop
There is a screenshot of a fancy cube switching system, which would drain resources, but that's just fancy graphics and most implementations really are about a page or less of source code. NighthawkNZ -- you sound a bit confused; this is not a whole other application, rather a base feature built into the core window manager. You don't have to use it either; you can continue to use your computer as if the other 3 desktops don't exist, it's just like normal. This is what I do most of the time. A feature that I never use taking an extra 5kB of RAM is hardly a big issue when I'm using 50-60mB (that's 51200-61440kB) less of RAM overall compared to Windows. Not that I'm going to disrespect Windows (which is a perfectly valid and useable operating system), but just pointing out it's a tiny amount in the grand scheme of things, and hardly feature bloat -- and I'm a chap who uses vim and programs in C, so that's a big thing for me to say
Gremlin
15th January 2008, 01:41
ah... wouldn't work for me, when the vast amount of my time is spent comparing or referring to something, so they need to be side by side. I just run a large desktop space, with a double or triple height taskbar. As NighthawkNZ said anyway, you work the way thats best for you.
Besides... I have 4GB of ram in my home machine, 3GB in the work one... (Yes yes, I know you guys will point out you wouldn't need that much in linux or unix...)
xwhatsit
15th January 2008, 01:44
Yep, that's why I generally don't use them either. I like things to be side-by-side; hence the love for dual screens :D
The comment on RAM usage was in reference to NighthawkNZ's comment about feature bloat.

I'm talking about virtual desktops as in the tiny lightweight feature (maybe 2-3kB -- yes kB, not mB -- of RAM) that has been kicking around in window managers since the late 80s.
Im not confused... 2 to 3 kb of ram so it is still using resourses that would be better off being used for sothing else... heck even if it was one line of code and 0.00005kb it still is at the end of the day resourses being used
this is not a whole other application, rather a base feature built into the core window manager. You don't have to use it either; you can continue to use your computer as if the other 3 desktops don't exist, it's just like normal. This is what I do most of the time. A feature that I never use taking an extra 5kB of RAM is hardly a big issue when I'm using 50-60mB (that's 51200-61440kB) less of RAM overall compared to Windows.
as above, in some ways it would perfer it to be a seperate appilcation so if I didn't want to use it then its not loaded with the core OS or window manager, which in some resept I find the MS Windows virtual desktops managers better because if not used, not loaded...
When in use they use a little bit more memory, which application is open and in which virtual desktop etc... (and also remember each desktop can have different settings) again might be tiny bit of memory but still would prefer that memory being put to better use.
Not that I'm going to disrespect Windows (which is a perfectly valid and useable operating system),
why not  I do all the time and I use it more than Linux
but just pointing out it's a tiny amount in the grand scheme of things, and hardly feature bloat -- and I'm a chap who uses vim and programs in C, so that's a big thing for me to say
My point is a bloating software, happens no matter what as new features are introduced (yes I know Virtual Desktops have been around for yonks) I didn't see the point of them back then and don't see the point of them now... but each to there own
ah... wouldn't work for me, when the vast amount of my time is spent comparing or referring to something, so they need to be side by side. I just run a large desktop space, with a double or triple height taskbar. As NighthawkNZ said anyway, you work the way thats best for you.
exactly, each to there own
Yep, that's why I generally don't use them either. I like things to be side-by-side; hence the love for dual screens :D
The comment on RAM usage was in reference to NighthawkNZ's comment about feature bloat.
I prefer dual screens as well, especially when I am editing video, and as I said even if they were 1 line of code and only took up 0.00005kb of ram I would rather have my system using that 0.00005kb of ram processing that video, or audio file or graphic image

Ack Shirley, that's the "Bob the Builder" toolbox, awarded to any programmer who breaks the build.
I'm very temped (seeing it's within arm's length) to change the sticker from "Yes we can!" to "No. It's fukt!"
It's tidy because I don't do any actual work.
And because a tidy desk is a sign of a sick mind.
My desk is a blardy mess at the moment.......
As long as there is room to stick my legs up on the table and lean back in my chair then I am happy....... I reckon, one must be relaxed when working at a comp.....

I use both (actually, my second screen is my laptop, controlled from my desktop's keyboard and mouse using synergy).
Sure, it's useful to have things side by side to compare, and multiple screens are very useful for that. There's also things that don't need to be compared - I don't need to have a KB browser next to anything else, and usually email and irc aren't related to much else either. I keep these things on separate virtual desktops - as well as things I'd rather have adjacent, but don't have the screens for.
IIRC I have 6 virtual desktops on my desktop, and 5 on my laptop. I only usually use one of the laptop's at work, but at home, I might have trademe (and related search windows) on one, KB (and related movie players or whatever) on another, email on another etc. Mostly I don't use them all, but they're there when I need them. And a second screen on a laptop is a little impractical, when not used at a regular location.
