NZ Police CommCens Alert 16:15 5-01-2008 Bay of Plenty

Location of incident: State Highway 36 Tauranga

Incident Type: Serious crash

At about 4:15pm a car and motorcycle collided at the intersection of Williams Road and State Highway 36 south of Tauranga. The motorcyclists leg was severed in the crash. Traffic is limited to one lane. The motorcyclist has been taken to Tauranga Hospital.

Bike got on the news for hitting a kid on a go cart who came out on to the street!

Hope both are doing well as it said the rider was seriously injured!

Rider seriously injured, kid has minor injuries, and wasn't wearing a helmet either. Happened at Kawakawa Bay, South East Auckland.

Yep....3mins up the road from our place (Pyes Pa)and 1min from another KBers place.

Because that's exactly what defensive driving teaches us to avoid. If you carry the risk then you accept the consequences. If he consciously accepted the risk and got caught out then that's one thing. If he was cruising with no regard for the risk then that's irresponsible. Either way the rider is at fault.

If it were me I'd expect to be charged unless the fuzz took pity on me.

Sorry, but I disagree. We do not know the circumstances. There may have been a cage coming the other way stopping the bike from taking evasive action.
The cart may have come from behind a cage.

That's like saying the 2 bikers that rode into the HP in Buller Gorge should be charged when there was nothing they could do. Sometimes shit happens no matter how careful you are. You could hit a patch of diesel and drop the bike. Who's fault is that. The rider, or the wanker that put the diesel there in the first place.

What to use Jedi mind tricks and premonition and "know" some kid is going to pull out directly in front of you at point A on your ride. So instead of riding through point A, you stop at point B park you motorcycle across the road to stop traffic and go and walk up to point A moments before the kids comes flying out on the street and jump at him, giving him a big fright and teaching him the dangers of being on the road........ yip I remember being taught that..... you fool.

Every time you drive, be it in a cage or on a bike, there is a risk that you might be involved an incident. By accepting this risk you take responsibility for any consequences that may arise (you put yourself in harm's way) and also for taking steps as are necessary to mitigate the risk (drive defensively).

Yes, I agree that shit sometimes happens. The environment (kid+cart+irresponsible parents) plays a major part but it is the rider (especially the rider's attitudes to risk) that almost inevitably put them in harm's way.

Ever wonder why some people are seem unlucky? Same shit over and over? Road conditions or dumb cage, never their fault though. Attitudes are insidious.

In answer to you diesel question: If the rider was fanging it and accepted the risk of not being able to recover from an unexpected road condition then it's the rider's fault. If he was riding carefully and still lost it then he needs to re-evaluate his attitude to that particular risk - still his fault. If he didn't even consider the risk ... his fault.

In both cases the prick that dumped the diesel is also at fault.

Why should you expect to be charged for riding your motorcycle down the road.?.Risk,consequences what a lot of shit....The mutts parents and the go cart driver are the only one's that are at fault here, its a F....n road not a playground, love to see you try and dodge one coming out of a driveway at speed when you are right on it,Seen a kid ahead of me on the pathment a while back in the Winter coming toward me on my left as I neared the back of two parked cars the prick came between them and straight out onto the road yep it was wet to boot how that prick is still alive and I never dropped my bike one will never know,Had a wanker pass me on the left in a built up area yesterday at the Mount, had I veered left at the time and hit him I certainley would no expect to be charged..And yes I have done defensive driving courses I hold every licence avalible, and I exceed 30,000ks a year on a bike I will be responsible for my actions but not for others, it is those that by "their" actions, that put your life at risk, now they are the concern!!!

I blamed myself for the last two years that I was incompetant and binned due to just that..a few months ago someone else binned on the exact same spot and is still in Burnam spinal unit .Taking a good hard look at the road it has a nasty dip right on the apex..personal responsibility didn't do shit to the fact that peice of road is not up to scratch.We were both riding to the conditions but the road integrity wasn't showing mercy.....a lot of folk are aware of that particular peice now so heres hoping we all stay rubber side down...
