View Full Version : Auckland: Classic Ride: Coro loop 2nd Feb
Nat

this ride is no longer the coro loop but just a short ride to Kaiaua, lunch at the pub there, then all the way back.
Hey, so I'm keen to organise a classic bike ride on the 2nd Feb, for all those people with classic bikes.:ride: It would be cool to see what's out there, and meet a few people, and go for a ride.
Details of the ride:
Date: 2nd Feb say 9:00am at BP on corner of Ti Rakau Drive and Chapel Road
Pace - slow (these bikes are old!)
Bikes - anything that someone out there (you!) thinks is a classic: Jap, Brit, American, Italian, standard, 'cafe racered', mint, a bit rough: all welcome. So long as its old, and in road going condition, and a bit cool, you should come!
Route - Through Clevedon, Kawakawa Bay etc to Kaiaua
So, is anyone else keen?
I just edited this first page -

Good point. If there are some people that figure their bike can't make it that far, maybe we could go for a shorter ride, say Kaiaua and back, or something similar.
I guess it depends on what people's ideas of classic is - I can see that a 1900ish classic might struggle on such a long ride, whereas a 1960s/70s classic wouldn't struggle so much! FWIW I went on a roughly seven hour ride on my classic (70s Honda) last week and it didn't even skip a beat! (Did burn about as much oil as petrol though!)
So maybe let me know if everyone would prefer a shorter route.

it would be realy neat to have a classic run, I will take my 1949 BSA, something under 100 KMs

That sounds like a cool classic, you should definitely bring it along! If enough people want a shorter ride, that's what we should do. :) I'll keep my first post updated with any changes we make

Sweet as, everyone's welcome to come and check out some cool bikes, but seeing as you've got some serious weapons for bikes, you probably wont want to stick around at our pace!

Oh dear, how I wish. That's what I'd like my bike to look like. Slowly converting my 250RS into a café racer but it's taking years.
No I'm afraid it's just a plain-Jane 1980s CB250RS, bar a big round headlight, clip-ons, classic Smiths-style speedo and fork gaiters. It's got wire wheels though

You wouldn't enjoy it . Too slow.
But, it's an interesting question. What *does* define a 'classic'.
Is it simply age? In which case , how many years old does it need to be ?
Or style, or design ? In which case is a new Renfield a classic , because only an anorak could state the differences between a 2008 model and a 1958 model.
I think my Titans and kettles are classics. But is my RZ350 ? Same sort of bike, just 10 years younger. But if it is , is a 2005 Aprilia RS250 a classic. Same sort of bike.
Is a Kawasaki W650 a classic? It's certainly the same character of bike as a unit Bonnie, which presumably is ? What about a Triumph (Hinckley) Thruxton ?
A Goldie is certainly a clasic. What about a Yamaha SR500 ? Or a new XTX600 ? They're all road going sporting big singles.
Is it just oil leaks ? Which would rule out the Honda CBnnn . I've heard people say that the SOHC Honda CB750 is a classic , but the DOHC isn't. Which seems a narrow dstinction.

Sir, you are clearly misinformed. You're welcome to rub your nicest dinner jacket all over any CB250RS's engine in an effort to prove me wrong, but that will only excite your dry cleaner. But the engine's too small and it's not old enough.
I think age has got the most to do with it. Old bikes are funny things; one particular bike might have been shunned and considered complete shit when it was released (and for a decade or so after), but give it 40 years to age and suddenly it's a `classic' and you can show it off or sell it for silly money. Superdreams look to be heading that way, as with CX500s. Just wait a couple more decades.

...
i reckon what defines a 'Classic' is just a matter of opinion.
somethings generally classic if its rare, particularly cool or strange, was really popular or perhaps really bad when it first came out... doesnt have to be old either, i think the '03 cbr600rr is a modern classic cause when it first came out it was so much more focussed than anything else in its class and set a benchmark for things to come... but im sure many will disagree.
i think nat indended this ride as an opportunity for ppl to get out on the bikes that often dont get shown off as much as they should. im gonna come along with my camera to get good look. ill be equally happy having a perv at xerxesdaphat's cb250rs as i will a 1940s BSA, or even a honda c50 scooter.
i cant wait

Hmm, have to see if i can get the RG500 running under it's own power by then.
There is also the issue of petrol for the thirsty beast.

I'm into 'slow' and while my bike's 24 years old now, it doesn't ooze 'Classic' (my last bike was a CX500 though) .... I may be up to a slow trip around the loop and ogling some (quote DMTD) Real Bikes.

Why wasn't this discussed months ago when I was in Auckland. I could have brought my 1998 bike with a 1978 engine along "Technologically, it's a classic, technically it's not"

An important point. A lot of classics will be two strokes. They need FREQUENT fuel stations. Preferably with good stocks of two stroke oil. Does anyone have a petrol tanker they could bring along.

Well the 650 (if it is going) has a 22l tank.....
Ixion
20th January 2008, 21:54
Well, that's all well and good, but 22 litres isn't going to go far with a bunch of bikes doing 10 kilometres per litre, is it ?

Hey everyone, There have been a few people who are more keen for a shorter distance ride, so I'm suggesting we just head down to Kaiaua this Saturday. Lets meet up at 9:00am at the BP on the corner of Chapel Rd and Ti Rakau Drive
Is everyone still in? I'll update the first page.
