Did anyone see this on the news tonite
http://www.tv3.co.nz/News/VictorianstylebuildingsproposedforGisbornerebuild/tabid/209/articleID/43029/cat/41/Default.aspx
The bit I particularly love is
A similar plan was put in place in Napier. After the earthquake and fire there in 1931, the city rebuilt its CBD in the Art Deco style and is now considered the Art Deo capital of the World.
Hmm maybe we should think about why that is...oh yeah, shall we check when art deco was popular
Art Deco was a popular international design movement from 1920 until 1939
Now lets think why would Napier be built in Art Deco...:dodge:

I did see that and my "Blithering Dunderheads" rant was a thing of beauty. I should have recorded it. The presentation of the "News" has hit Infomercial "quality". It's been dumb for a while. Now it's drooling into its afternoon porridge.
Graphic example of what happens when you stop teaching kids facts and they start getting jobs in the real world. It won't matter soon, because the people who have been trained to assimilate and analyse factual information will all be dead in the next 30-40 years. Then the Infomercial will really be king.

”It gives us a sense of history, a sense of belonging to an era and a fantastic tourism icon for our district,”
There are plenty of Victorian towns around the world already....there's a whole state-full of them in Australia.
Why not go for something more unique...Aztec, Roman, Inuit, Atlantis, Lord of the Rings?

I think they should just build Illegal drug dispensaries and saloons with hitching posts for the bloody horses that crap all along the main road.

Have they not got a giant carrot or fish or potato or bottle or sheep or apple or dole cheque or something to give them identity like most of us already?

I'm sure many of the locals would like something like a giant surfboard or something, but in reality it should be a large joint, a Lion red bottle and a letter from WINZ with fine print saying something about being on the dole for 12 years.

Bullitt hits the nail on the head -
When it is built in the style at the time it is interesting period architecture
When it is built later in an old style it is a theme park

This "news story" also implies that there was some sort of catastrophic devastation as a consequence of the earthquake that requires the great city of Gisborne to be rebuilt. Most of the reported damage was to stock, fittings and fixtures, rather than to the structural integrity of buildings.

considering only a few building require any repairs at all i dont think gisborne will be getting rebuilt as anything in particular. some crap old bits of concrete have been taken off the tops of some shops, and a couple of other old brick walls fell into other shops, tho overall there is bugger all damage to anything. yet another case of the media hyping things up
