Could there be a better radio show than Matinee Idol on Radio NZ (AKA National Radio) at the moment?
Do yourself a favour and tune into 101 (or thereabouts).
Two mature (almost said old there) professional radio presenters with a vast knowledge of music just having fun...Phil O'Brien and Simon Morris.
It's only for two more days so you'd better be quick.
1230-1700 until Friday.

Tis an entertaining listen indeed. Would tune in, and listen while in the work van.
Is it the same line up that has run for a few years now?

OH MY GOD
I cannot believe anyone could enjoy Matinee Idol.
Two old fogies who seem to have been told "Just dither on until five o'clock, rabbit on about any old thing, you don't need to plan. Play lots of crap old music and try to make things faintly funny."
AARG!
I actually sent them an email suggesting they save on paying the presenters by just streaming the BBC World Service, thus increasing quality, news content, and decreasing costs.
I listen to morning report, then Summer Noelle (Hot sexy irish voice), and then I TURN THE RADIO OFF until 5pm, when it's time for Worldwatch and interesting documentaries.
The Prairie Home Companion is good listening, the highlight of my radio week. National Radio (or should I say Radio New Zealand National) are playing that Saturday and Sunday from 10am till 12.
Enjoying Matinee Idol?! Inexplicable.

I have arranged for Katherine Ryan to shoot me in the head if I ever show any signs of enjoying Matinee Idol.

Hmmm...interesting.
Summer Report...essential.
Summer Noelle heft meer mmmmmmm!!!!
Prairie Home Companion is clever I'll grant you but it's just...too...I dunno...foreign. I'll laugh when I listen to it but I won't stay in the room to listen nor bother to turn on the radio to get it.
But Matinee Idol is the most fun for me.
I wish I had their wit, energy and knowledge on all things musical...nothing too modern I'll admit but "eclectic" isn't too big a word beginning with 'E' to use to describe their playlist.
"Catholic" would be good one starting with 'C', "diverse" if you prefer a 'D', "sweeping" if ..............

You do hear a bit of obscure stuff - today I heard an Italian version of "Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini"

Hi all,
Just wanted to say a quick and heartfelt thank you for the comments re Matinee Idle. Always interesting to read other peoples views on this programme, postive AND negative.
For those who enjoyed the show - watch this space... a chance that MI may well be making a more regular appearance on Radio NZ. For those of you that DON'T enjoy the show - well, there's a chance that MI may well be making a more regular appearance on Radio NZ.
Sorry.

I really loved the show also, and they even read out some of my emails. :)
And I dont think we should underestimate the amount of preparation that goes into something to let it sound so spontaneous.
As an aside, who HASNT got the hots for Noelle??? she's mine, MINE I TELL YOU.

Busted??? Nah.... LOVED your comments... I'm afraid too old (as you pointed out...!!!) to worry about negative comments. As my boss keeps reminding me, if we DON'T get any negatives, it means we're not pissing enough people off....

Actually, my secret shame is that I did listen. Often.
But none of my real-life friends will ever know!

I think MI is great. I wish they would get rid of Jim Moron Afternoon and have MI on year round.
Noelle has a lovely sounding voice, but I heard her use the word "hirsute" interviewing a bloke. He clearly didn't know the word and she just left him dangling, didn't help him out at all. It came across as really rude and I haven't tuned in to her show since.
Prairie Home Companion makes me cringe and I can't turn it off quickly enough.
Different strokes for different folks...

Loved Matinee Idle, even though I was really only listening when driving round in the cage on jobs. A regular show year-round would be a major win.

I have peltor work tunes mounted on my climbing helmet, so when im swinging around in the trees I get to enjoy Matinee idol. (as long as the chainsaw doesnt drown it out, although at times that can be a blessing and sometimes for some reason I feel compelled to run a saw in each hand pressed against my ears)
Nice work, your the reason why there is a geneva convention and guys laughing from the tree tops

Hey - thank you for your honesty!!! If I may, I'd like to give you a little background on the show: I was asked four years ago if I'd like to present an afternoon programme for a month from Boxing Day. RNZ management, figuring there wouldn't be too many people listening, also told me I could pretty much play what I like!
HEAVEN ON A STICK for a radio announcer... (I can't bring myself to use the "DJ" term)
To be honest, the alternative was to be reruns of 45 minute documentaries on "Gorse Eradication In Central Otago" or something, so I jumped at it. After 30-odd years in commercial radio (which, incidentally, I now find to be totally unlistenable) this was a golden opportunity.
After many months agonising over exactly what I was going to do, I figured I may as well just play music that I found interesting, for whatever reason. And it seemed to work....
I must aadmit to being quite surprised at the reaction, most of which is pretty positive. As I keep saying to people, it ain't brain surgery, and as I'm sure you've gathered, the whole thing is pretty unrehearsed and seat-of-the-pants radio. Like I mentioned earlier, I'm too old and boring too really be concerned about negative comments - if someone doesn't like it, feel free to switch off.
Anyway, back to that all-nighters now on Nat Rad - harsh reality!
Thanks again for your comments, and I look forward to more messages on this forum.
Have a KILLER weekend...

PS: Blatant name-dropping here - I had a coffee this morning with Aaron Slight. He lives not too far from me, and as I used to race bikes about a million years ago, we have a little in common. I must tell him about this forum....
