So with the new format, riders get less time and less sessions but pay the same price?
4 group day = 4x20min sessions = 80min track time
3 group day = 5x25min sessions = 125min track time
Don't mean to sound negative,its just I'm a tight bastard.:pinch:

there will still be 5 sessions per group

also, as people start leaving (after 2:30 / 3pm) the opportunity to go out in more than one group has been known to arise

Yep at the end of the day 9/10 you end up turning down track time because a) you are knackered, and b) because you are more than satisfied with the riding youve had.

Gutted im not going down :(

Yep these trackdays by motott are awesome, I'll be going.
I think its a better idea to have the motards separated(group1 out of 4 being motards). You'll get more decent track time on a sports bike.
Unless you just want to go hunt some two wheel drifters.

Don't be shy and ask for advice, it'll definitely pay off.

And mostly, have fun.

Yup.

Depressing, isn't it.

Four wheels are always going to be faster around a racetrack, though, that's just the way the physics goes.

At least we can go out there at Taupo and have fun all day on machines that cost about the same as a replacement seatbelt or a single side panel for one of those A1 cars.

what have they done to the track????

kiwifruit
23rd January 2008, 19:10
The entry to the right hander at the end of the main straight (turn 15) has been widened, it now has "an island" where the outside right of the corner started, not big or high thankfully.
The new corner (the corner the A1 cars used) goes to the right of the island making the turn a right angle and very tight.
The old corner is as it was...... with an island on the far right as you enter

We will be using the old corner (left of A1 island)

The A1 cars have laid quite abit of rubber and cut up a couple of the tighter spots but nothing to worry about

Was fun having a little fang around, following Chris Mitchell on his k100....
A light mist of metal dust in his wake as the old girls bits are dragged thru the best part of every corner :corn:

Oh yeah, and hover above the seat with the balls of your feet on the pegs, move your arse and upper body (kiss the mirrors, etc) over as far as possible for the corners to give yourself more speed with less lean, look through the corners to your exit point, and when in doubt, take a tighter line.

Also, there's always more lean angle available.

Except when you've run out.

That was the best trackday I've done so far!

I wasn't sure how I'd cope since my back had been sore the last few days, but it didn't bother me on the track.
The new tyres were good (Dunlop GT501's). Got them on thursday because Wild West Honda was having trouble getting me sport demons, so they gave me those instead.
The brakes were working well (used to be mushy), the modifications I've done to the clutch were good too, I didn't get a sore clutch hand. The small adjustment to the forks to lower the front and make the steering more neutral worked well.
I wasn't really sure what I wanted to achieve before going out there, but once I was on the track, I felt like the experience from previous trackdays had improved my riding and I found things that I could work on, different lines to try etc.
I was having as much fun as I did a few trackdays ago when I was getting my knee down heaps and fell off, only this time I felt I was more within my limits and didn't fall off. :D
Top all that off, the weather could not have been better, sunny but with a cool breeze.
The scenery on the ride home was picturesque and the temperature was perfect. (just my back was aching the whole way home. but that was a small price to pay).

I'll see what the videos I took are like and hopefully post them up somewhere, will link to them in this thread if I do.

Well while you lot had a great trackday, I had a horrible one..... I got a flat rear tyre on the way to the track, lasted 2 sessions of slipping and sliding on corners before I realised the tube was absolutly fucked so I missed my next session and went to darryl augest motorcycles to get a new tube in my tyre. When I got back to the track I went out on my next session and after 2 laps the oil light came on!! Then on the last session of the day and the bike decided to pack a sad and wouldnt speed up as well as it should and was boggy in lower revs!!! Was not happy at the end of the day when I got home and just wanted to either throw it off the top story of the house or just go to bed :mad2:

Well while you lot had a great trackday, I had a horrible one..... I got a flat rear tyre on the way to the track, lasted 2 sessions of slipping and sliding on corners before I realised the tube was absolutly fucked so I missed my next session and went to darryl augest motorcycles to get a new tube in my tyre. When I got back to the track I went out on my next session and after 2 laps the oil light came on!! Then on the last session of the day and the bike decided to pack a sad and wouldnt speed up as well as it should and was boggy in lower revs!!! Was not happy at the end of the day when I got home and just wanted to either throw it off the top story of the house or just go to bed :mad2:

well it seems that Skid Marks quote was right on this occasion?

don't ya hate speights of bad luck?!

I got plenty enough track time, by the end of the 5th session I could feel my arms getting tired braking for turns and wasn't as focussed as in previous sessions. I even hit reserve half way through that session, haven't had that at a trackday before!

Here's some of my footage from the day. I was in the blue group (group 3).

the first video is a few edited clips, got a couple laps following jrandom at the start of the first session, then a lap (almost) following DMNTD in the third session and finally a lap from the 5th session where I had a bit of a slide (slo-mo of slide at the end of the vid).

The 2nd and 3rd videos are the complete 4th session.

A couple of very good motard riders that were fun to play with :girlfight:

Also one motard dude goin' WAY too hard in the first session and showing me on of the most spectacular crashes I've had the honour of watching first hand. Would've been God-like had it come off but he was just in far too hot. Apparently some pics around of the whole thing happening.

Also one motard dude goin' WAY too hard in the first session and showing me on of the most spectacular crashes I've had the honour of watching first hand. Would've been God-like had it come off but he was just in far too hot.

I was standing by the fence at the entrance to the track, watched him come into the hairpin and crash right in front of me. Fortunately there were no other bikes around him at the time.

He'd been backing it in harder and harder on every lap, just going nuts, clouds of smoke off the rear wheel, etc, claps and cheers from the audience, and that time he was fully sideways even before he was in line with the inside of the hairpin.

He was obviously just going to keep heading sideways straight off the track at that rate. It looked to me like he panicked and grabbed some front brake, because his bike didn't just highside, it flipped right over the front wheel. He and the bike were fully six or seven feet up in the air at one point.

Macktheknife got a photo of him hitting the ground with the bike still in the air, but I don't know if there are any of him and bike airborne or in the process of binning.

Heard mutterings that he ended up with a busted pelvis, leg and wrist. Here's hoping the mad bugger ends up OK, whoever he is.

I was in the medium group but really should've moved up to the quick-medium group.
Watch the vid I posted earlier in which you can see the speeds I'm doing...the guys in the FAST GROUP are doing some of the corners 50kmph faster
Medium is a good group to start in IMO...you can usually move up a group if you're too much faster than anyone else,so I've been told.

I began in the novice group and moved up to medium after a couple of sessions, if you've done a track day before then start in medium; you can move up & down the groups as you see fit.

By the end of the day I was consistently sitting behind a big black betty - but not wanting to pass cos it would've been rude :buggerd:

We'll have to have a proper showdown on the next one. My 100hp and 120 newton metres hauling around 100 extra kg and bits of metal that drag everywhere in the corners, versus your 60-ish hp bike that weighs nothing with kickarse brakes and good ground clearance.

I reckon I'll put up a good fight.

Depends on which corner and which part of the corner. Also bike setup. My bike has pretty heavy springs up front, and likes a bit of weight over it during cornering.

Sometimes I like to just rest my gut on the tank too :p
