Its official, I am a destroyer of bikes, particuarly 2 strokes! My poor wee A has been dying slowly for a week or so now and it needs some serious work!
It has almost no power now and is making a very strange noise. I pulled out the air filter in the weekend and cleaned it, I have replaced the spark plug to one step colder but will change it back to see if it does make a difference, though I really doubt it. My luffly man is gonna help me check out the timing but we need some advice PLEASE!
Im also gonna attempt a leak down test, but would also need some help with this as well please!
If anyone can offer some advice or maybe tell me where I could get some cheap parts should I need them, please let me know. I'll luff you forever and ever and ever!

Ha! You know what, that's prob it. Makes alot of sense, especially with the noise its making DUH! Will do that in the weekend, thanks Dad! :2thumbsup

and its very cool to watch!!!
Tell your man that he has a pm.
Ill pop over one day (as i do! Hope ya dont mind me :P) and listen to it. Maybe i can give you an idea :).
The A100 has no reeds its just straight to the carb (Speights bud told me thanks man)
So u can elimate that.
Compression Does seem a bit fishy.
Shove it in first gear and see if u can push it along easier than normal (A cheap man's compression test!)
Ive got plently of random type's of plugs from the pile i got with the two RG's.
I give ya an B8ES to give a go (assume u run that series) Ive also got a B9ES (Hotter) and a B7ES (Colder)
Carb could need a clean? Maybe u got some degreaser in it the other day when u were cleaning it or some crc that would probably block a jet rather well.
Its not leaking oil from the base gasket is it?

How much are piston and ring kits for them? Curious in case I ever get something similar

9th January 2008, 21:49
You might very well need some help with that -- I didn't know the A100 had valves?!
Still need to compress the mixture through the crankcase and back against an intake valve of some description (reeds, rotary discs sorry not familiar wuth A100's edit: see from above piston port motor) so while a leakdown test as us diesel riders would know it isn't applicable it's still a valid thing to check.
Hels, apart from the obvious piston and rings worn out or broken, decoke, sparkplugs etc.
have you checked the gearbox oil? I have seen the sealant between the case halves and the gearbox fail and the gearbox oil rises as it fills up with petrol/oil mixture.
This wouldn't explain any noises though, so I would be thinking you may have a collapsed/dodgy main bearing which would in turn cause the crank seals to leak and you notice a definate loss of power accompanied by some pretty scary noises.
The only other part to check is the big and little end bearing. There's fuck all else to go wrong in a single cylinder two smoker.

Hiya, i used to have one, bucket raced it, is yours raced or for puttering around on/commuting? What do you mean has no power? could be fouling in the exhaust which can get pretty messy on those things which sounds like you're going to deal with soon anyway. It could be the exhaust port as well as the muffler, i know mine was pretty choked up, but I'd do the muffler first, depending on how many km's the engines done it could be the big end going, or if it feels really flat then the rings could be flogged. Qualman knows the feeling with a big end going, something like it just doesnt lilke revving and wants to hold back like its just saying"no"? thats what my GPX did when it ate one of its big ends on my way to work.:blank:. keep us updated

Yep, changed the gearbox oil a coupla weeks ago, the old stuff was friggin disgusting!
You're right though, there's really not to much that can be wrong. Im just hoping that it dont cost too, too much!
Quallman, Speights Bud, cheers for your advice as well! Looks like im gonna have a very bust weekend! Still gotta help Malcolm with his RG as well. Im not too sure *why* I lve 2 strokes so much!!!

I'm not sure thats an A100 bottom end, at least it's nothing like ours - no carb on the r/h side

Thats an AX100 (reed valve engine) by the look of it.
EDIT: If you look close at the pic you can see AX100 scratched on it. Seller must be blind.

Oh your right my bad i didn't even check it out and it just looked like a basic little suzuki bottom end! Heck if it was cheaper i would get it as a spare so i could thrash my current one to inches of its life.
Oh wait thats the plan already!

Why not just give it a quick birthday ? Pull the pipe off and decoke it using caustic soda (evil stuff but effective) or the tried and true blowtorch method.
Pull the head and barrel off.Thats just 4 X 12mm nuts to undo.
Clean up carbon build up on the piston crown and the exhaust port. Put a new set of rings in and a new head/base gasket.Put a new plug in it.
Before you go to all that effort you might want to pull the baffle out of the exhaust and clean it.

Cheers Doogle.... It has had a new spark plug, had the exhaust of it and believe me there was nothing worth even thinking about decoking it.... It has no bafffles to speak of but a home made jobby involving a washer and a pretty weld. It has compression and the carb and air filter are fine, though I am considering a leak down test, should I be able to find the gear. We fiddled round with the timing to no avail. I am thinking about replacing the points etc anyway though. I am definately considering new rings. I am gonna chech out the battery and all leads. I actually have a suspicion that its electrical.... The bike goes pretty much OKish it just doesnt go over 60 kph... It kicks over sweet the spark plug looks fine so its running OK.... Im hoping to check out the battery tonight. A mate has an A that's running pretty sweet so I may even swap over the batteries and see if that does it.... May even take a multi meter to it. I dont believe its ready to die yet but I want its top speed back. Especially since its intended for Bucket racing!

Points gap yes, Timing not yet.
Need to make or obtain a tool to remove the magneto bit.
Not sure of how the timing should be set either, I see one line that it may be and can see the slotted holes that I guess are to set it. More investigation required...

I noticed something strange.
I could use a couple fingers on the fly wheel whilst it was in netural and could turn the bike all the way over.
I wouldn't be surpised if its compression. Dad's going to buy a compression tester when i remind him so ill let u lend it :2thumbsup.
My AX100 is running a B8ES i guess u head isn't quite the same.
So you whipped the head of yet? If you want you can come over and use my tools (limited) instead of going to upper hutt.

Hmmm after all these talks of things and stuff, i just remember when i got water in my GPX fuel, it wouldnt go over 70, have you trid another tank of gas? draining the previous of course. Also, on my one i removed the choke altogehter because it wouldnt run at all otherwise (I.e an extra cable i couldnt be arsed with having around) [I also ran mine no battery, tore ALL the wiring out of it and linked the coil direct :P the bike only had one single wire on it ]

She might be needing that if its for sale aye!
Took it apart after trying substitution of ancillary bits and: woah hello! Piston and bore have been rubbing together like teenagers!
The timing was out by a wee bit after we got another a to compare it to but no other ideas so far on what may have caused that to happen.
Could the timing being 5 or so degrees out have got it hot enuf to do that much damage? Hoping thats it coz really dont wan't to fix it to have it go again.
I'm quite amazed the wee thing starts!
What fat rings the wee thing has too, so cute such a wee engine!

The A I had in the 70's had a bulletproof engine and what you have described with the piston and bore sounds atypical so I'm wondering have you had oil pump problems because I presume this one is still Posilube oiling and not premix in the tank?
Paul in NZ
28th January 2008, 17:05
Either that or it's just plain wear n tear... No engine lasts forever...

Str8, Paul's point would mean that the piston and bore would be well worn so did this thing have great piston slap and what is the ring gap like in the bore? Those engines were good for at least about 30 - 40,000km on a piston.
I thought from Koba's comment about teenagers he was meaning it looked like it suffered some serious abrasion not just normal wear hence my question about the oil pump.

Righto, I have ordered and paid for a brand new complete piston kit from Tony B at a very reasonable price! Once I get the piston I will take that and the cylinder to the engineer type people just around the corner from my work and get the cylinder bored to fit the new piston. Fingers crossed that this does the trick cause its all relatively simple (at the moment)! I really cant see it being anything else!
Though now I have actually stripped and put back together an A100 and I pretty much know how they work and gained some very valuable mechanical knowledge and learnt alot myself and lack of patience, lol!
Thanks koba for all your patience, especially cause I blew up your bike and that's still not anywhere near being fixed!

Yea, it will definatley be getting a very close checkover before the new piston goes in, It did nip up rather than just wear out with some very distinct marks.
It has been thru a heluva lot in its lifetime remember.
According to those who know more about such things than I it looks like it was from getting too hot.
Maybe the timing being out a bit could have done that?
Or also maybe merceiless thrashing?
It was still burning plenty of oil as it slowly died.
:scooter:
As I said, a VERY close checkover
