View Full Version : Cold canvassing for a fulltime job

yeah, that's right.
I'm entering the fulltime work force this year!
anyone know of any dog groomers, cattery/kennel facilities preferrably around the shore or around the mt eden and pt chev areas that I can send my cv into??
Alternatively, does anyone work in an animal related business that is around auckland (reasonably close to CBD or the north shore) that could possibly spare a position?
all you help will be muchly appreciated :)
cheers

try the SPCA they are all over the place, would be a good place to start
Curious_AJ
10th January 2008, 09:39
yeah, they are looking for people at the moment.
I have them on my list, though it's really difficult for me to get out there as it's all the way in manukau (the auckland SPCA that is, not the RNZSPCA which is in new lynn i think)
I'd be really interested in working there, but as i said... distance (i float between the shore and mt eden during the week [living wise that is])
thanks for the suggestion love, and i'll still be sending them a CV.

Star Dogs in Mount Albert...you'll have to look the address up but they are not far from Unitec.
SPCA is out by the airport...10 mins from Mt Eden.
Don't send your CV, get out there and go and visit, seeing someone knocking on the door is far better than a letter in the post.
If transports a problem, arrange a vehicle for a day and go door knocking, accept any job at all and get into the industry. Don't piss about with it, get out there tomorrow and knock on doors.

Yep!! Most definitely!! :niceone:
Takes a lot more effort to get out there & knock on doors.. than it does to post an envelope! & it shows employers you have initiative!! & you are willing to do what it takes to get yourself out there in the workforce! :Punk:
Along the way I've heard that many cv's that get posted to an employer.. end up in the rubbish bin!!!! :slap:

I highly recommend that you do one anyway as it's a great introduction to yourself(as you know) but there's also a high chance that when you bowl on into a business that they may be more than a little busy therefore not be able to give you/your CV the required attention you're desiring at that particular moment.

Keep the C.V succinct, and the personal profile no more than one page.
have a list of referees with contact details (phone numbers) as written references are usually just briefly read and the HR person generally prefers to speak to a previous employer in person(but in saying that they have to have your consent to do so and can only confer with the referee stated on your list).

aah, awesome info!
my personal profile is just under a page, so i'm sweet with that ^_^
as for referees, well I havn't worked much so I don't have many of those and some of the places I have worked at don't do the whole reference thing as a policy... *doh* ...

referees can also be people like:
*the tutor of a course you may have done
*College guidance councilor
*volunteer work "boss"
*church minister
*youth group leader
etc etc. Someone who can "vouch" for you, as a person. :2thumbsup
If one/two of the above can say things like: you are honest.. a hard worker.. keen to learn.. can work well in a team.. can work well by yourself.. on time.. reliable.. well presented.. etc etc. Then that's the sort of things a prospective employer will like to hear!

Personal or character references have little or no use in the employment situation.
That is why a lot of business' do a certificate of employment rather than a formal reference, it allows the prospective employer when reference checking to verify the information provided as a valid predictor of the candidate.
Proper structured references are rare but hold valid information that can be verified.
But all have to adhere to Privacy rights, thats why the person who signed a reference or has been listed as a referee is the only person that can be spoken to formally about prospective employees by the recruiting officer.

AJ, some good advice has been given here.
I would add/support that written references (at least in my line of work) are not given or held in high regard, contact details for your last few places of work are expected along with permission to contact the referees for confirmation of details.
See if you can meet the managers in person and don't be afraid to be politely persistent by returning at a more appropriate time.
Also try the local councils for a job as they also do dog control, and often run a kennel type arrangement.
Good Luck.

i usually meet the managers in person coz they're usually the vet or one of the nurses anyway lol.. and there's maybe like 4 people working in one clinic at one time usually.. so there's a good chance i'd get the manager lol. (as for grooming and catteries etc i will try to talk to them)
if i said that right?? lol..
but yeah, i will try to talk with them in person.

Mmmmm, from my experience of looking through CV's from last time we were looking for someone, You need to try to find a way to stand out from the masses, all cv's look the same after a few.....don't copy the 'personal statement' from the book (you know....I'm keen and willing to learn etc ) it gets real tiresome reading the same thing over and over again....
We looked for someone not over-qualified (phd's don't mean much in my line of work) someone keen and interested in a related passtime, Honesty is right up there, and punctuality is a trait sadly lacking in jaffaland. work references, not personal one's with contacts is really what we like to see.
As a side note, it's amazing how many people have those waste-of-time qualifications, Graphic design.....geeze every other applicant had one.....

Aj is only 19 & as she has already stated, below.. she hasn't worked much yet.. so she needs to find other people in some "seniority type of position", who have experienced "her", to be able to "vouch" for her, in place of a "boss". As she gets more work experience under her belt, she can start collecting references/referees. In order to get a job, you need references.. but in order to get references.. you need to get a job! But the ball has to start rolling "somewhere"!
& you left out the things I was pointing to, that one of these type people would be able to say about her.. which are the things that a boss is looking for, in someone of her age!!

Have you actually experienced the employment process and job fit selection of prospective employees? :oi-grr:
And as a factual piece of information;
Occupational psychologists tend to doubt the usefulness of references in predicting future performance. The Schmidt and Hunter meta analysis gives a coefficient of 0.26 for references -ahead of job experience, but behind unstructured interviews.
The biggest thing in gaining employment is selling yourself properly & efficiently in interviews.
Most recruiters for prospective employees only briefly scan CVs and make their decisions based on 'Seven point plan' and 'Five fold frame work' selection processes

We are talking about a young girl here who wants to work with animals. The places she will approach will not have any of what you state. If they need someone they will get someone who is interested in animals, has experience with animals and is planning to spend her life working with animals.
You need to show that animals are what you want to work with. Take a volunary position to starters. Knock on doors and volunteer your time. Show that the $$'s are not what drives you. Get involved in an organisation that cares for animals. Becom a member. Spend time helping them. To get funds, to set up shelters, to adopt out animals. Anything. You will soon have all the references you need and also a network that will provide you with a job.
Good Luck!

Just jumping ahead to the interview process itself. Don't forget the interview is as much yours as it is theirs. I always go along with a list of questions I have for them. As they want to find a quality person as much as you want to find a quality job, the interview process works both ways. Approaching it in this way, you are showing confidence, planning and execution. And they definitly notice when you come prepared.

Actually they are very busy and popular as they can help with trainning and socialisation while owners are at work.
Not sure of the amount but it is a great set up. Plus they have a shop, groomers, nutritionist and behaviouist.
The latest is a W.O.O.F.
Warrant of onging Fitness.
Costs about $80 for one hour with nutritionist and behaviouist. They help with training and diet problems as well as health issues.
You would be amazed at how much people spend on their dogs. I have several customers you send their dogs there and they are raving about it.

I've worked in the animal industry for a while now, and i know from experience how hard it can be to get into. The trouble is there are not a lot of jobs and there are many people who want to work with animals. The best way of proving you are hard working and keen to get your hands dirty is to find a place you want to work and volunteer some time every week. When a job comes up if you already have a history there it will make it that much easier. Places like the SPCA rely heavily on help from unpaid workers as they function on a tiny budget - even their top level employees dont earn a lot.
You sound like you're really keen and prepared to deal with the full spectrum of animal work. Remember a lot of people aren't, they just want to play with animals all day and when confronted with the dirty or upsetting tasks they can't deal with it. I've seen it many times! So you should have a big advantage there!
Of course this might not sound ideal if you are in a position where you need a job to survive. It might be worth looking at something else in the meantime, and saving one day a week free to volunteer. Honestly, if you really want it, you'll get it, and working a job you don't really want will make you that much more determined to succeed!
Hope this helps, best of luck with finding that perfect job!

I will give my sis your email now for that job I told you about last night, but if you need help with cover letters and stuff I am here to help! I have spent the last little while sending CV after CV in and all had to have a specific cover letter.

Hope this helps, best of luck with finding that perfect job!
cheers zoolander, it does help a little
and i have thought of volunteering.. though its hard for me to get to any of the places to volunteer one day a week.. like the Auckland spca is ages from where i live currently. if i got a job there i'd move.. but if i have a job elsewhere in the meantime it'd be hard coz i think i'd stay where i am more or less... however, i'm always looking out for places to volunteer...
I am looking for other jobs as well though. I've applied to so many different places.. and the one buffy's sister referred me to is a call centre job in an insurance company so thats VERY different to what i'm looking for lol.. but a job is a job at the moment.. i need the money so badly.. i'm getting desparate lol.. but i've never stopped looking the whole time ive been back.. i eat sleep and BREATHE job searching at the moment.. besides the time i take off to work at hell pizza in northcote (yuck...)
where do you work by the way?

Bit of advice... dont drink too much beer tonight.
Maybe tone down that enthusiasm a tad, optometrists need level, calm receptionists, not wildly spinning ones.......LOL
Saying that, I actually think you would do well there.......Good Luck mate! Lets us know how you get along.

Chin up, lass. I think this is one of the hardest, most soul destroying things in life. Searching, applying , getting hopes up , and then cast down again. Over and over. It breaks y' confidence, crushes spirit.
I can't give you a magic answer, all I can do is repeat the trite expressions of encouragement.
But one thing I found helpful was to apply percentages. I reckoned , of every 100 jobs I looked at, there'd be one that I could justifiedly apply for.
Then of those I applied for there'd be one in 20 that I'd get an interview for.
And of the interviews, one in 10 would ask me back for the second interview.
And of those one in 4 would actually lead to a job.
(Those figures are reasonablyt realistic , by the way)
So, if you think about the numbers it doesn't seem so personal. Just "OK, they had 50 other people they interviewed. So it wasn't anything against me, personally, just most of us had to be culled. I've not actually applied for that many, next time may be MY turn"
It's really, truely isn't anything wrong with you. Nor is it any reflection on your ability to do the job you applied ofr. Just that they had one job, and 100 applicants. Maybe all of them, good people, all capable of doing the job. But still, 99 have to be disappointed.
Keep plugging away at it, next one may be the one that comes up diamonds
Good luck, and God bless.
BTW the job market always goes very dead after Christmas, doesn't start to pick up again until about now. So Seek and such like would be pretty barren in the last month or so - it should get better in the next few weeks.

Happy to have helped you out.......
I was in the right place at the right time, when I saw the dog groomer at a stall at a event I was attending and I just happened to ask the owner, if they needed more workers and also willing to train someone.
They were, so I grabbed their business card and contacted you.
Once you received my message, you then did all the hard work by ringing them, and getting a interview on that same day, and then getting a trial run on the job.
So now its up to you to show them that you can do the job and willing to show them that you are able and capable of becoming a dog groomer.
You have the opportunity of having a job that you love as you love working with animals.
I wish you well in your new job. Go girl.......
