Trikes!

Hey all!

Heard some great news this arvo, well i've been suspecting it has been coming for a while. My mum has decided to enter the world of biking. Turns out that she's always wanted to but been a bit wary. This to me is awesome as we will then be a biking family and thought of cruising the country with my mum is pretty cool eh :woohoo:. The thing is, she's totally in love with trikes. So here's where i need some help. What is a trike classified as...a motrcycle..a car...or a light motor vehicle? The guy down at trikeworks in taupo told us that you only need a car license to drive one?

Now before you start bollicking me lol know full well that i'm making my mum take motorcycle lessons, and once she has her license, more motorcycle lessons. And then she will have the use of my bike to learn proper biker ways on. So back to topic, what is a trike classified as. Also anybody know of any trikes for sale in Auckland or any manufacturers in Auckland?

Also as my dear mother is getting on in years, how will this affect her licensing system. Do mature riders go straight to full after a few months on learners and restricted? Thank you so much guys and gals for any info/help you can render, as the quicker i can get my mum up and rolling the quicker this biker family can be complete. *with hopefully a puurty trike in the garage*.

I'm pleased that you talked to Neil at Trikeworks. He builds some great trikes and will give you honest advice. As far as license requirements are concerned, you should check with LTNZ. Depending on the construction, some can be ridden with a car license while others need a bike license.

Last I heard you could register a trike as a car or bike, you chose. If it's rego'ed as a car its seat belt and no helmet and if rego'ed as a it's bike helmet and no seat belt. If this is true I know which situation I would rather be in if it rolled. I'm not 100% sure if this is right about the car rego but regardless they have always been rego'ed as bikes.......way back since I had one.......
I dont know that age affects the time taken to get a liscence. But she should get a handle on it quickly as obviously there are no balancing issues with a trike, cornering though will be influenced on whether the forks are standard bike forks or extended.

I'm pretty sure trikes can be riden on either a car or a bike lisence been thinking of getting one when I get older

Anyone over the age of 25 years, can go throu the license system quicker than those aged 15 up to 25.

I also love trikes........ and the day I can't ride a motorcycle, that is when I will buy a trike.

Depending on how they are made....... either car or bike license.

All you gotta do ej is sneak out in the middle of the night with a cutting torch and a welding torch wth a few other assorted bits and pieces and convert her car into a bike lol then the next morning she wont even know! tee-hee-hee devilishly simple and fool proof/

dude depending on your mum's body size tread slowly with the trike. yup may look seasy to ride , however there are some basic's too , and alot of older trikes don't have revesre gear fucking hard to push out of a carpark...weight wise and you steer a trike so theres always pushing pulling going through the front bars so beaware .. a lighter trike ie out of a suz's 900 -1400 maybe a better handling bike than one larger in cc
