View Full Version : Dogs (with four legs)

I was wondering if anyone can tell me what the score is with dogs here. I have been on two ride outs in the last week or so where a number of riders have nearly been taken out by bloody dogs. The first one was a farmer on a quad bike who let his dog roam all over the road, luckily none of us were hit. Tonight down near New Plymouth there was another incident where the first bike was nearly taken out by the dog, the second bike luckily braked and had a near miss but the dog obviously thought third time is a charm and went for our bike. Nadorj did the sensible thing and stuck his foot out, maybe the dog learnt a valuable lesson.
I am a country girl and an animal lover but at the end of the day if you hit a dog in a car something is going to get hurt and damaged but nothing like if you hit a dog on a bike going at a resonable pace.
Do you not have legislation here that prohibits dogs from being with thier owners without a lead or that prohibits owner from letting their dog roams the back roads as they want? At the end of the day noone wants to bin thier bike
or bugger themselves avoiding or hitting a wandering dog.

What your saying is quite right but unfortunately when copies of said legislation was sent out to all dogs various rebel dogs spread throughout the country decided they had had enough of legislation and said "we are free ranging canine and from today we roam free"

It's just another road hazard really, part of riding...
I did hit a labrador at about 120 on my old 250 once.
Scary thing is i was fine, bike was fine apart from a bit of fur in the front tye and the bloody dog lived - for a while at least...

Most of our dogs n cats are tagged and/or microchipped. The bloody farmer with the dog the other day deserved a damned good kicking.

Some hazards you can't avoid such as cars!!! You know what I mean.
I hit a goose once and it freaked the crap out of me and I couldn;t drive immediately afterwards.

Cars are different to dogs; if you hit a car you die.
If you hit a dog you probably wont but the dog probably will.
I don't swerve for dogs.

My dad got hit by a car and was lucky, my uncle on the other hand went round a blind bend at night and a dumb ass lorry driver (not all of them are dumb asses, OWNER this includes you) had not left any lights on and he went under it and his head was cut in half. Luckily he died on impact. That is another bloody hazard; dogs I guess pale in comparison really.

ive been rushed once while leaving my own driveway. luckily, i left at a faster clip than normal, and so by the time the dog got there, it was at the back tyre. at my normal pace, it would have been my foot.
i rang dog control, and they did nothing.

If control wont do anything I would go to the owner and ask them if they like thier dog in one piece!!

thats them. i think they may have moved out, but now the new ones have a bull dog. least it looks too fat to move fast.
almost collected this old ladies corgi today... saw her crossing, so slowed down. did not expect her freakin dog to follow AFTER she had already reached the other side. dopey woman should have had it on a lead, to keep it safe more than anything. [dunno which was older, actually.]

A neighbour of mine had a dog that used to chase cars, and motorcycles.
It was a really nice dog, just liked to chase vehicles.
The dog was quite clever, it would never actually get in front of the car - always attacked from the side so it was in little danger.
But it got it wrong one day - chased a car, then stopped to gloat, and got run over by the trailer.
Bottom line though for me at least ?
Don't swerve for a dog - it will destabilse you and may put you in harms way from other road users - you may cross the white line or get into shit/parked cars etc on the left.
Brake if you can do so without falling off or having the moron behind you mow you down.
[They have to do some more work on those doggy micro-chips. They are already adjusted to stop dogs biting - can't they add a program to stop them chasing us ?]

A dog fucked my very first brand new bike.
It was a brand new XL175, and the brother wanted to take it for a fang.
I'd just got it home from the shop, so I said fuggoff. The old man talked me into it however, so off he goes, just around the neighbourhood.
I waited, and waited... no brother/bike. After half an hour the old man drove off to find him. He was just being loaded into an ambulance, a couple of blocks away. A dog had ambushed him from a driveway when he was doing about 70k and he actually ran the bastard thing over and lost it.
Bent forks, handlebars, levers, fucked headlight, instruments and a big crease in the tank. It’d done about 15 miles.
Oh, and the brother broke his leg.
Bastard.

Oh, that's gotta suck..
Gotta say I'm yet to encouter a dog in the road but I couldn't say i'd like to. Some of those things are pretty big..
I have however hit a duck before, one dark night the dark darted infront of the front forks, got blood spatter all over my leathers and all over my bike.. felt pretty bad when I was cleaning the bike up but essentially i'd say it's not worth the risk to you or your bike by dodging an animal.
Survival is my top priority, oh and having fun.

Do you not have legislation here...
Yeah, I think we do.
But it's a bit of a problem enforcing such legislation out in the back blocks of a country with slightly more land area than the UK and a population of only four million - most of the time, nobody's watching.

Yeah and I would suck to live in a country that is massivley over regulated!
We are in danger of ending up like britain and that would suck.
I hear they have cameras all over the place and all sorts of Orwellian shit.
People whinging and crying that they want to be looked after and "the government should do somthing" will only bring It about much faster.
Let the dogs roam, I'm the one steering my bike and I am the one responsible for what happens to me while I am riding it.

Absolutely.
I was hoping someone would use my post to respond in this fashion.
Long live personal freedom, small government and a population that tells the rulemakers to go fuck themselves!
:niceone:
And yes, if that means I have to occasionally keep my eyes open for dogs on the road when riding through the countryside, so be it.

If she's still whinging six months after she moves here, then it'll be a free-for-all.

If you can take note of the dog, phone dog control at the end of your ride with the location and description. Quite often they know the animal from other complaints and will go visit the owners.
You are not required to swerve. Owners must have their animal on a lead and under control when they are off the property. Farmers I believe may have different laws as some farmers have to chase stock (with dogs) accross the road to the paddocks on the opposite side.
When I am riding (if feasible) and I see a child of animal on the side of the road I try to slow down just incase they decide to do something stupid.

Yes IT would suck to live in a country that is over regulated. Do you have any idea how much regulation they have in the UK and fo what?
Yes we have cameras tis true and if they were used properly it would be to keep an eye out for bloody illegal immigrants and pissed yobs (oh yeah you have those here too don't you).
Having legislation does not mean that you are whinging, and I don't know if you have had a serious accident or lost anyone who rode a bike but having legislation that may save a life is not a bad thing!

It's this attitude that will eventually have us all being transported from place to place in nothing but fully-padded ten-wheel Acme People Movers on roads with 50kph speed limits.
Dogs shouldn't be allowed to roam the streets, but bugger getting overly bothered about it. If you're riding a motorcycle and you can't keep out of the way of a dog, you probably should be in a fully-padded ten-wheel Acme People Mover.

I think that everyone whould be safe to ride on the road and that the bloody owner who let their dogs run around willy nilly should be legislated against; the birch is a good idea. Oh sorry is that too right wing and British for you ex colonials?!!

A friend of mine is on the ACT party list, and she doesn't know anything about right-wing ideals. Telling people to vote for a particular political party does not imply any understanding of economics or sociology.
Anyway, dog control has nothing to do with the overworked one-dimensional political spectrum.

i was an elected official at one point and was all for cutting costs for the electorate but without scrimping on services. There are so many ways you can cut out waste spending!!
As for the client I didn't mean it in the way I think you mean it. I had my own political consultancy business and he was a client. Believe me the stories I could tell you would just confirm what you probably already think of politicians and is part of the reason I got out of politics!!

But quoting myself to clarify here...
Left wing, right wing, who give a fuck. If a dog gets in your way run it over.
If It doesn't and It's a close call that may have seen you dead, go and do somthing you enjoy because you can - you are still alive.
Whinging won't fix alot, it just eventually leads to more and more rules that dont do shit all because dogs are dogs and microchipped or not they will always wan't to sniff piss.

My point exactly, Putting more regs in doesn't increase the level of personal responsibility that people exercise.
A phenomonen demonstrated by the abortion known as the anit-smacking bill - Making it illegal for normal parents to exercise a reasonable amount of physical force on their children will not stop those who bash kiddies because that was already illegal and wrong anyway!
So I guess we arrive at the point where if I fall of from hitting a dog I only have myself to blame.
If you fall off from hitting a dog we shall have onother whinge thread :msn-wink:

The first one was a farmer on a quad bike who let his dog roam all over the road, luckily none of us were hit.
Out in the country, this is just a normal hazard - although a working dog should be under better control than that. If ours tries the "wander on the road trick", he gets short shrift!
At least dogs are easier to avoid and handle than f**king roos! a dog is easier to see and a well placed kick normally gets rid of them!
A guy I know out Gisborne way, got taken out by a wild goat last year!
