Not on Mark Ave! It's like a really big half pipe that follows a long curve.
Even ol VN's and VP's had quite a turn of speed on them (over 200), quite astounding for a pushrod taxi!

But Miss Velvet was going to go over the Rimutakas and then get onto SH54 back to SH1, which is a bit further than the 650km direct route up SH1 (710km according to the Wises website, if you insist on accuracy).
I guess that'll learn me to not leave myself open to having my hairs split by the nitpickers...

So...hw2...then after norswood turn onto HW50?? [hw 50 to napier is faster than carrying on,on hw 2...then napier-taupo [hw54]...if you turn on to hw27 and tirau it also shaves a good amount of time off the trip to aucks...and I discovered in my trips from the wairarapa...that was the fastest route by a long shot! next quickest is through the gorge...and on to HW1 via feilding...and up through national park.

You're confusing yourself a bit...
SH54 is the road from Palmy north through Feilding back onto SH1 south of Taihape.
The Napier-Taupo road is SH5.
And the Desert Road is still a quicker way north than the National Park route, which adds more than 50km, unless you're prepared to ride through National Park doing over the ton but would have stayed legal-ish on SH1. I've seen plenty of cops through National Park, though, so that doesn't make much sense to me.

First lauguage I learnt was baby talk/tantrums [partially a sign launguage...some would argue a level of dancing at times is also involved!!]
second lauguage...[I have a Major in this too]...Is Utter crap/bullshit...this is currently my most fluent... ;)

yep, I reckon...and the reason is that everytime I ride on that road, I'm on the way to something exciting like the Cold Kiwi:woohoo:...and my brother in law's got a place in Ohakune, so I can always get a really hot shower on arrival, and it feels sooooooo good after the long ride.

I'm back!
Return trip via Ngaruawahia, Te Kuiti, Whakamaru (SH30, I like, is nice ), SH32, SH47 to National Park, then 49 to Waiouru. If I'd known about the Para's I wouldn't have done 49 cos it was lame. Might have doubled back but it was getting late and unfamiliar, tight, twisty stuff in the dark doesn't do much for me...
Sat on SH1 until SH54 to Fielding... Blah blah blah.
I took heaps of photos. Urm well four to be precise, from the lookout on SH54 on Friday night.
Bite me.

I think the wasp actually drowned in the fly spray, rather than perishing from its insecticidical qualities.

I did it both in one day, the day after boxing day. Farkin looooved it!! There are quite a few wash outs leading onto one way lanes etc but they are clearly marked. I really enjoyed them both way's but had to say that coming from Raetihi to Wanganui was best as there were only 2 cars on the road the whole time. Believe me you have to do the Parapara's. I still reckon that the Taka's are better but this is longer and there isnt really an up hill down hill. Its tar sealed the whole way and it is twisty not *too* twisty like the Taka's but loads and loads of fun!!

Yep, Waiouru sux!
Went up the parapara's the day after watching the boxing day races in Wanga's as we were staying there for a couple of nights, so that's why I goto to do it twice in one day. Glad I did too as I blew up the bike (my partners) a week later. Another interesting road was going over Saddle road through Paihiatua etc, which is the way we went home after Wanganui. We stopped at the windmills/ turbines, pretty cool place. I did about 800 k's in 2-3 day's after Boxing day, we are really lucky to have some awesome roads around the lower North Island!!

I think people who live mid North Island have got it good, so many great roads within day ride distance.
