View Full Version : Sunday ride (13 January)

Anyone keen?
Righto, I've rolled some die (plural of dice you oiks!) and it means Southside trip via SH22 to Raglan and back via the luvverly twisties ne'er Huntly?
Meet at BP Autobahn as the fixture? Say 10.30am for 11am departure? Really really late for me but I know people aren't as crazy as me! Will be a sedate zootle, no idiotic antics or speed freaks need apply. Will have lunchies in Raggies with the hippies, hopefully see some titties (of the luscious well developed feminine kind, no moobs allowed ), but more for the ride! :msn-wink:

I'm thinking of some nice twisties out Whangamata way, come back via the Kaimais and Te Aroha and a jolly good little pootle in between said points
Otherwise, Hunuas to the back of Mercer, back up SH22 and tootling around Waiuku ....
Or .. out to the Bryndwyns and a look at the toilets in Dargaville ...
You know the madness that strikes me as I need to lay down rubber on those lanes of freedom! :woohoo:

Bloody brilliant ride GiJoe, loved it. Thanks so much for showing us your secret twisties. You get the cup :first:
Favourite moment: Long left downhill 55km/h corner with beautiful seal, so loved it.
Least favourite: 90 degree right corner with recommended speed 25km/h in one of the vilages on the way back. Estimated it wrongly and ran wide into the dirt, but lucky it was 5cm into it and it was not a weired angle coz I would have had my first bin story.:shit:
Overal very happy and would gladly do it again at a moments notice. Glad I pulled that sickie too - nuffin better than getting paid and doing something you love at the same time.
I couldnt figure out at the end when you two in the front took off did you go straight onto the motorway on ramp which was 700m down the road or did you go somewhere else? We turned on it and didn't see you since so we decided to go home. I have the gut feeling we missed some of your twisties at the end with that move but if that's the case, you can show them to us next time :soon:
Managed to snap some pics too. I'm putting them on...
Thanks for the great day everyone :woohoo:

Nah, we just hung a left and gapped it down the motorway at a great rate of knots. Wait who am I kidding? We're on two-fiddeys. :P
Excellent ride (apart from the twat in the white car who tried to say hello to GIJoe) , and I look forward to doing it again!

That ride I enjoyed the most in my (short) history of motorcycling. Managed to get into this curious rhythm through certain bits of SH22 that suited the bike to a tee. Could feel forks winding and unwinding, touch of swingarm flex, but in certain strings of twisties this all seemed to bend me into the next corner as if it was designed that way. Weird.
Had a ball. Thanks guys.
Bike didn't lose any more oil. Not sure why the oil dropped from full to 1/4 from the low mark within 200kms, but on the ride home it stayed at 1/4. Will top it up to full again and see what happens.
So the rest of you guys in front peeled off onto the motorway immediately as well? We couldn't see you in front, despite having a very clear view of a long strip of motorway. Peeled off at Ramarama to have a chat about where you guys went, decided it was too late and carried on up the motorway.

Ahh yeah I kinda lost sight of you guys for a sec cause I wasn't paying attention. Thought I saw a bike head on the motorway so went down the ramp but I was clearly mistaken as there wasn't anyone there once we hit the motorway.
See what happens when you get tired!
Much apologies to those behind me. I'll have to organise another ride to pay back the twisties you may have missed.
On the plus side, after a day of non stop cornering your tyres probably needed some squaring off on the motorway :msn-wink: :chase:
Was a bloody great day out. Thanks Jeaves for taking TEC on the way back so I could have a play up the front. Loved the roads. Great choice GI!
The only downer to my day was being attacked (read attempt to ram me twice) by a cage just now on the way back west. Got his plate and called 111 on his arse. Fingers crossed they caught up to him (or even bothered looking).

Was that that corner between the last place we stopped and the motorway? If it's the one I'm thinking of it was a real nasty corner. Over a rise, off camber, and tightening quicker than you expect.
Kicks all the survival reactions in eh! Bloody glad you didn't drop it in the dirt :shit:

Well what can I say, you gentleman are a pleasure to ride with. Now where do I start? Lets go from the beginning!
I'm sure this ride was organamised by Jeaves, but somehow the planning details of the ride was left to me!? Anyway I rolled some dice and voila! Instant route (of course abled to be modified at a drop of a clutch by me!)
The meet up was awesome, plenty of bikers and bike pr0n to ooh ahh over  Xerxesdaphat was your typical coy biker with his "I won't be there" .. "oh yes, I will be!"
Anyway, we zip off to the beginning of SH22 and head out to the twisties, was luvverly and the only incident was at the Waingaro pub where a frikk'n lady in a white car was on the wrong side of the road turning into the driveway! :gob: I had slowed down because of this area, but I was still emergency braking like crazy! Felt the back fishtail, released pressure and looked to the clear space to the left and kept it rubber side down.
Only to also see PirateJafa zip to the right of me (thank gosh!) we pulled over at the side of the road, I allowed my heart to sink back into its right place and my sphincter to get out of my mouth
I tracked down the erroneous driver and it turned out to be a dear old maori lady (her race has nothing to do with this, but I thought I'd mentioned it) she was delivering birthday cakes and we had a good chat, I wasn't going to rip her head off since it wouldn't have helped ... she reckons she always does that and nary had a problem .. till now :slap:
Anyhoo, all good, just another moment in the day of a biker! :oi-grr:
Off we tootled to Raglan and had lunch there, I think PirateJafa and Xerxesdaphat are batting for the other team they were ensconced thick as thieves behind another guy!
Saw plenty of bikes and admired the view with some moments of ornithology
Anyway, we are bikers so off we zootled back to Ngaruawahia and did the river road ride and cut back to SH22 via the tunnel (always good to rev the ol'engine going through it!) Conditions were hot and the tar was running, we rode with circumspection and I'm sure the guys behind thought their ride captain was a random rider doing all these weird little jinks and movements ... and then they understood when the usual appellation we give to NZ road quality was made abundant!
Deja Vu struck again when at Onewhero golf club, a crazy cager was overtaking at the intersection ... with me in that section of the road :gob: Emergency braking again, pulled hard left to the shoulder and all was good. PirateJafa even zipped by me on the right again! :sweatdrop
Anyway got to a banjo playing village (okay it was Tuakau) and we did the last bit of twisties and we flanged home. And yes, we did take the left turn onto the moronway, but we were matching speed with the cagers and doing a fair rate of knots! :innocent:
Piccies to come.

Nah that was on my way back from Browns Bay to Blockhouse Bay. It made me realised I couldn't live in the US. I'd arm myself and kill one of these road rage pricks and end up in jail.
Anyway, we are bikers so off we zootled back to Ngaruawahia and did the river road ride and cut back to SH22 via the tunnel (always good to rev the ol'engine going through it!)
Ahhhhhhh that's how that worked. I couldn't work out how we did so much of 22 when we went the other way back.

So I wasn't going nuts? Thank the biker gods! I was getting a case of the guilts for cheating everyone out of more curvy roads.
I've never ridden any of those roads but I sure will be again sometime soon!

Yes, I was behind you when you did that, it was right at the end of the ride coming out of our last stop. It was an odd corner, looked like it could be safely taken at 50kph (which felt slow and harmless compared to the open road after a while), but the road surface and camber spat us out to the other side of the corner pretty quickly. I backed off after seeing you run wide. You were pretty upright by then so it was fine.

Well gutted. Should be along to the next one though, Two rides on the weekend is a bit much for the missus when I have other jobs to do around the house. :baby:

This is what happens when youre at work and read forums. Something comes up and by the time you get back to the thread you forget that there are more pages and you just reply to whatever post you are looking at.
Thanks for that. Looked like fun. Someone pinched my black gt250r for your ride :)

Haha! Brilliant. Bog-standard bikes should only be kept for concours d'elegance events.

I'm not sure coz I forgot to zero my trip meter but I'm guessing around 400 km total today (rough estimate) can anyone confirm ?
400km would be about right. I did 500km yesterday including coming from the shore. BP to BP would have been 380-400km I'd say.
Remember, by riding with me, you are practicing gijoe1313's patented ironbutt riding bike-fu! :devil2:
I was plesantly surprised how well I coped with the amount of km I did yesterday. The trips up to Dargaville must have got me a bit more riding fit :)

i was the other hyo rider on the day (the one who looks grumpy in the all the photos). I had an absolute blast on those rides. I rode much slower than the rest of the pack but still really enjoyed the nice twistys and learnt a lot along the way.

Hey, like I said, no prizes for the invisible non-existent cup! Just a nice safe pootle with like-minded riders. And you know we always waited up at a nice safe spot anyhows! :sweatdrop
Just glad you got some learning and I was mighty pleased you were asking questions and getting some answers!
SH22 is a great road to ride, but as you can see it can bite you just like any road or inattention on a ride!
Would ride with you again no prob.

Was glad to hear my advice re the right handers helped for the way back. It certainly seemed to make a difference as whenever we stopped to regroup you guys weren't far behind at all.
