well as some of you know im planing to make the big jump to welly:wari:
however my parents have now decided that if i go im not taking my bike due to the fact that its "too dangerous" and they will get me a car in the place of my bike .
so if i go i give up the 1 thing i love the most :(
and if i dont, i miss out on doing a year long cource so i can hopefully get a career doing custom paint work and will probly end up staying in welly longer than a year probly 3 or more.
the choice is so obvious but its a hard one to make.

Pretty bloody obvious to me.
Education is important.
Take the car. Sell it in Welly. Buy a new bike.

Ermmm ... you could "sell" the bike to someone in Welly, they might let you ride it while you're down here.
We offer a $1 for the bike sight unseen :)

Are you relying on your parents' financial support to live in Wellington?
If not, politely tell them that you're a big girl now and that they can fuck off and die. Then pack a bag and ride south.
If so, yup, you're screwed. Do what they tell you to, don't try to play silly buggers about it by secretly buying a bike that they don't know about, and get used to it - life's mostly about kissing the arse of whoever you're dependent on to pay the bills, whether it be your parents, your boss, your customers or your shareholders...

You're screwed.
You'll just have to suck it up and wait until you're an independent adult to get a motorcycle.
How old are you, anyway?

Yeah. Personally, if I was your dad and I saw this whingy little thread, I'd spank your spoiled, ungrateful little arse halfway to next week and tell you to pay your own way to Wellington.
Consider yourself bloody lucky to have parents who lavish such resources on you.

Ahhhhhhhhhh I didn't know you were that much of a youngster, damn... What's happened with me and alot of my friends is that the family fucking hates it... Then they realise your passion and dedication and they think well if thats what u really want well they cant really stop you anyways. But then again being under 18 changes things a little bit... I donno.

What, your parents buying you a car? I wish my folks bought me a car at that age.

While the public transportation system is really great here, it is also semi unreliable. There are a bunch of dedicated year round riders that would say that biking as commuting is by far better. Take me for example I work in the cbd and live in upper hutt. Taking my car to town is $10 plus parking so around $20 a day. Train is $5.60 each way on a 10 pass so $11.20 a day. Biking is $20 a week for petrol and there is no way that you could say that running cost / maintainence would be more than $36 a week which is the difference between my bike and the next cheapest option.
Why don't you do a deal - offer to do a defensive driving course if they let you keep the bike. It is far more cost effective and from a safety point of view you don't have to ride crazy - sure there is more traffic but it is traffic used to bikes (Welly has the most bikes per capita than any other major nz city). Having biked around a couple of other citys you certainly notice the difference in the awareness of car drivers compared to that here.
Anyway good luck to you, if you do manage to pursade them make sure you come on a sunday or wednesday ride.

If it comes right down to it, sell the bike and do your course. Suffer for a bit now so you can sit back and laugh (or ride) for the rest of your life.

My personal view is that if you live in Wellington and live in the CBD you dont need a car, and while there are times it would be useful (grocery shopping, moving flats) the hassle of storage, cost of parking blah blah far outweigh it. Plus it will have to live on the street, and presumably you will be flatting?, so you can count on it being stolen or broken into or trashed at least once in any given year.
Same goes for a motorbike too, they're just a little easier to store (but a lot easier to steal, too).
Check it out a bit before making any rash decisions...
By the way I lived in Wellington for a number of years as a student and then as a lowly paid government employee. I am sure it hasnt changed that much.

I wouldn't let my daughter, aged eighteen, live in another city with nothing but a motorcycle as transport.
Girls, when it comes to motorcycling, tend to be faint of heart and ham of fist. Sure, they lack the foolish bravado of young men on the road, but they make up for that with an astonishing ability to freeze and panic before doing precisely the wrong thing at the wrong time.
Guarantee there'd be bins. Guarantee there'd be tears. Guarantee there'd be far too much association with dodgy young gentlemen on bikes who'd sweet-talk her and bang her like a screen door in a hurricane before leaving me to pay the vet bills.
Yes, I'm aware I'm going to be burned at the stake for this post. It's still all true, though.

Id say go without the bike for a year, you have your whole life to ride.
If you are doing custom paint though, maybe you should thake the plastics and tank with you to practice on?

Going to weltec for auto refinishing? I still haven't decided if I'm going there, got to make my mind up quick though.
Let us know how the custom paint aspirations go. I'm pretty keen to get into that myself

Well it sux being dependant but you are, so no choice really.
I'm glad my folks brought me up to be super independant... mind you when other kids were getting chaufferred places while I walked or bused I thought it sucked!
So at 16 I got a trail bike, at 17 I was doing an apprenticeship and at 18 I was living in the real world with no parental support. It wasn't easy but I made it:-)
Apply yourself to your education and in the not too distant future you will be damned glad of it ;-)
Good Luck!:2thumbsup

My suggestion is...
You are young... you can always get another bike...
Go to welly for your course... put forward the idea to your parents about getting a scooter instead of a car, cheaper for them, plus you wont have parking worries etc... cheap to run & it will get you around from A to B...
Then hook up with the welly crew to go pillion on rides when you feel the need to be on two real wheels (if that makes sense)....
That way... you still have transport... in your parents eyes it'll be safer... & once you have graduated.... go forth & get a new bike...
While you are in welly... you could get restricted/full licence (if dont have already) & the time will be ticking away whilst you scoot it for a bit...
Best of luck with what you decide to do, let us know what becomes :)

Sorry, but this one would be very straight forward for me:
First priority: your education. You seem to realise it is a fantastic opportunity, so grab a hold of it, and do everything you can to make it work. It may not be extended to you again should you muck this one up.
It is only a year, and it's a small enough sacrifice for lifelong freedom and financial independance from your folks (trust me on this one, I learnt the hard way!)
And besides, as a lot of people have already said, you don't have to do away with riding altogether, just be discreet and wait til you're able to do it by your own means :D :niceone: It'll come around faster than you think!

Harden the fuck up, its not that bad
Ha ha, it’s not about what chopper says: Hardening the fuck up, it’s about been careful. I often rode in the wind and rain (Not that you get a choice in Wellington) never bothered me most of the time but I was always cautious and i never had any problems.
Speaking of wind I was walking down Featherston Street a couple of months back, windy as anything. I looked down some of the side streets and all the scooters and some of the bikes had all been blown over, would have hated to be one of the owners.
As for your parents not wanting you to have a bike, just work on them and if worse comes to worse, do with out one for a year, get you education and get back to riding later on.
