Richard has booked our band again this year for the ride finish, so will see you at the end.
Come up and make yourselves known - I would like to meet a few more of you.

Can't remember what I was riding, but both Phobe and Petal can handle 140 with ease. Lots of smoke, mind.

Actually , thinking about it , maybe that's what he meant. Maybe he just wanted the smoke gone.

Oh dear - hope I don't get a ticket for going too slowly in that case.....!

As far as I remember the bloodstock centre (if it's what I'm thinking of), is just off the motorway at the Karaka turnoff. Westside. On the left. The BP autobahn can only be reached from the Southern direction of the motorway, so if you are coming up from the south you will see it on your right. There is a huge BP, a Maccas, an Autobahn cafe etc.

Ixion
14th January 2008, 23:43
Hopefully, they will send the scooters and smaller machines off first. That works well

The thing is, if the leaders are doing 100kph, the bikes at the rear of such a large group have to do at least 140 to keep up. It's an odd dynamic of large groups of riders. The elastic band effect.

Previous years most folks from west, shore, north etc met at a gas station (name and place eludes my brain) out this way before heading down.

But yes, most people met up at Papakura Autobahn then went on to Karaka.

Kept most of the KB'ers together during the ride.

Perfect op to wear your KB shirt ;)

The last fundraiser that left from BMW Headquaters very recently....... they let the scooters go first..... and then we all managed to pass some of them them all riding higelty pigelty all over the motorway and up over the harbour bridge...

On a previous fundraiser to that..... the scooters were put in the front and caused a huge havoc all over the motorway..... the riders of these said scooters have no idea on how to do stagger formation and how to even ride them in a group.
Heck one rider was riding there scooter and had no idea that they even had a flat tyre.....

Shove them at the back out of trouble...

The trouble is that because of the rubber band effect the bikes at the back have to go faster than the ones at the front. And the scooters can't.

So they stretch way back, and form a long straggley tail. Which irks the cops no end. With big bikes at the back they can signal us to get a move on and close up. Can't with scooters.

I am playing in the band at the finish and so have been in contact with Richard (the organiser) extensively.
It is on the Sunday (same as last year).
It is on Sunday 24th February.
The departure time is 9.00am. You can get there any time you like but the ride will leave at 9:00 am on Sunday February 24th.

I know this because we have to be set up and ready to play by 9:45 a.m. on Sunday February 24th.

This means that I have to be over at the finish by about 8:30 am on Sunday February 24th to get set up.

This in turn means that I need to leave home with about half a tonne of gear in the cage by about 7:50 am on Sunday 24th February.

This in turn means that I have to get up by about 6:45 am on Sunday February 24th.

Rest assured, that I am not gonna pass up my regular dawn breaker and get out of bed at that time on a Sunday without a bloody good reason.

If you want a serious answer, I expect the ride to start arriving at the finish venue about 9:45. Consequently everyone will be there by around 10:45.
Given past performance, I believe that the formalities will all be over by about Midday.

I remember on one charity ride, that there was a fella on a bike doing wheelies, what he didn't realise at the time was that nice car that was amongst it all was a cop... at the end of the ride when everyone pulled up near AMPs...... the copper stopped right beside the rider and his bike...... and was issued one hell of a ticket. The cop kept that bike in sight the whole way, plus he had the rego number.

There was a huge debate at the time as to whether or not he deserved that ticket... He was right in the middle of the pack.......

So just be aware that there are cops on these rides.

I don't get it. Our high rate of taxes in NZ covers free emergency medical care (including pick up and hospital delivery). Further more, morons on the roads cause us to crash and we're expected to foot the bill... So why are we paying twice?

I think if all bikers chipped in, we could get our own damn helicopter.

I very much fear that you are far from alone in making that choice.
I just hope that the affect on numbers is not too damaging. This is one charity that has all too close a connection with motorcycling and unlike you, few of those who cannot make it this time, will make a separate donation.

BRONZ are watching the effect of the early start time, to see how significant it is. They also are being hard worded by the cops (who actually suggested that such events should start at 7am !).

For the Toy Run, we just told them to piss off, said we would start at our advertised time, and the police weren't involved, well, that was up to them.

We are road users too, and just as much entitled to use the road for transport as anyone else.

Sad times indeed. I recall some talk after last years ride...there were some complaints from the travelling public re being held up for a while. As Ixion has already pointed out, this ride was the first time I have ever been hurried up past 120 in a 50 area by the police! The magic of racing through the bottom of Auckland city by the establishment has to be experienced to be believed.

I support the Westpac Helicopter any chance I get, we live out of Auckland, and if we are really sick, we get the helicopter ride to hospital, we can get there faster than Aucklanders by ambulance on the road!!!

Best of luck to the ride organisers, I too fear that the fundraising will be well down on previous years, not from a lack of support, but from the lack of desire for some to get up in the dark!

I very much fear that you are far from alone in making that choice.
I just hope that the affect on numbers is not too damaging. This is one charity that has all too close a connection with motorcycling and unlike you, few of those who cannot make it this time, will make a separate donation.

where can we directly donate too? the start time wasnt an issue for me, its just i double booked myself and had already promised to go to americarna in new plymouth. theres no way i could do both, much as id love to.

Excellent attitude and example.

The postal address is: -

or if you know someone who is attending, I guess you could get them to pass your contribution on.

Dont mean to be pedantic but I thought it was a "privalege" rather than an entitlement... (sp)

HTFU. The helicopter crew don't say "Biker crashed? Needs helicopter to rush him to the orspital? Nah, sorry, it';s raining we don't want to risk getting wet. Let him die"

If they can turn out in any weather, I reckon we can do the same.

'Erbert. I just saw the weather forecast.

This will take some heavy duty mouse-fu to get a sunny day

Anyone have a guaranteed virgin mouse ? Must have at least 3cc of blood. Send it to TheHovel.

Be interesting to see how many Harleys turn out. And how many sprotsbikes.

Could be a scooter, GN250 and Beemer day.

EDIT: Oh, and chookchasers , of course, That goes without saying, nothing stops the chookchasers. They're all in favour of rain, it's just wet, not muddy as well.

Even though there is high risk of road film and possibly *gasp* mud - the crusier WILL be attending...

Maybe the harley riders could get some 'training wheels' fitted so they could attend without risk of scratching their chrome? :innocent:

FYI - pillion seat on my mighty ZX is still available for someone game enough to leave their pansies in the flower bed and get a bit damp.

I don't think it is the scratching that is the issue. Spending the next week re-polishing the chrome could put them off though...

Yeah polishing the crome is a bitch...but today was a good day for polishing. Whether I can be arsed getting out of bed to support such a negative bunch....well that is another question altogether.

But my mouse-fu is strong.

Make your own sacrifices , but remember the Biker Gods are Chaotic. So no Black Unicorns. White mice are fine.

Cargo took some great shots on the go but only put up a couple. I like the one of the people on the bridge waving. Got our badges and T's etc. Will they have one next year now?

danb

Well it was an "ok" ride despite the weather, 500 or so bikes. Not as fun as last year due to the fact we had cages on the motorway. Due to this I think the safety level has dropped for the ride. Thankfully no one became victim. They really do need to close the motorway – I don’t think it would have been nice if it was a full turn out of bikes and cages.
The prize giving was quite a laugh with lots of the tickets not being sold.
Hopefully the ride still runs in the coming years.

The numbers were about half of last year but they still raised $8000 for the rescue service. I guess that means that those who turned up were really worth having.
