View Full Version : What's the weirdest thing your pet eats?

I ask this question because tonight while preparing dinner a large, chunky piece of roasted red capsicum dropped on the floor by my feet and one one my cats swooped on it and ate it, beating the dog to the prize! This same cat eats the thick end of asparagus stalks (cold and soggy/stringy) - and no, there is no residual butter or salt on them. I thought the asparagus was a one-off event after accidentally dropping some after getting the stalks out of the pot, but no he has eaten it on many occasions since. Any other pets with strange tastes out there?

Louis (aged 1) ate dishcloths for the first six months of his life. Little round holes started appearing in my dishcloth, couldn't figure it out. Then one morning it looked like swiss cheese - perfectly round little holes, about 4cm diameter. Now he's got fussy, just nibbles the tea towels occasionally. Likes to eat flies too :bleh: YuMMY!.... has to fight the goldfish for the priviledge after I've swotted 'em .......

My Dad's old Rotty used to sit at the table with him and share a piece of toast every morning, bloody slobbery mutt!! He was actually quite a good garbage disposal, and a sweety, but you didn't dare say rat or possum in front of him!! RIP Sam.

>Our first dog once ate a turd that fell out of our daughter's nappy as she walked across the room.
>Our second dog used to eat perfectly round holes in our double bed sheets and blankets. We'd always know when he'd done it as there'd be pieces of sheet mixed up in his turds on the front lawn.
>Our cockatiel once tried to eat my finger (bastard!)
>Our cat seems to eat anything that isn't cat food but seems to prefer brocolli and potatoes (cooked). He will only eat fresh meat if it's warm, not out of the fridge and he turns his nose up at rabbit, however it is presented.

Reminds me of a dog my parents owned once - she'd eat the fermented figs which had fallen under the tree then lie there completed sozzled. We were mainly worried she'd come across a wasp hidden in one and pay the price of a hugely swollen tongue. Thankfully that never happened, but she was funny to watch.

The barking bookends are very partial to icecubes, but their favourite would have to be eating washed up dead fish on the beach. Yumm, takeaways!
Brock disgraced himself yesterday at the aussie kayakers welcome in New Plymouth by streaking off and stealing a ham sandwich from someone's picnic basket while they flapped and shrieked. I felt like such a bad mother . . .

Blackberries, both my dogs pick out the ripe ones and eat them straight from the bush. My last dog, same breed, did the same. Doesn't seem to do them any harm but getting the juice stains out of their white wool is bloody difficult.

I don't have a pet at them moment (apart from 9 finned thingies, which eat algae, and soy-based meals), but when I was young (about 87 years ago), we had a cat () which would eat anything off the floor to prove how hungry he was, but was VERY fussy about whatever was put in his bowl.
Our dog would eat anything - we gave him all our scraps, and he'd eat the lot. When we had a roast chicken, we'd give him the whole carcase. The weirdest thing he ate was a goat head, which he'd dug up form the neighbours. Well... he would have eaten it, but I confiscated it and put it down the offal hole.
The weirdest thing he ever ate was apple cores, because he didn't like them. He seemed to think that anything we ate, MUST have been food. So, if I was eating an apple, and threw the core away, he'd retrieve it, and chew at it, but didn't really like it.
When we first got our dog (as a puppy), our youngest was a toddler, and the two of them used to steal each other's food. The dog would jump up and steal #3's icecream/biscuit/fruit, and in retaliation, when we put a dog biscuit in the dog's bowl, #3 would steal it. Two unfortunate things came out of this Food War: it taught the dog to jump up to try to get food from people's hands, and he ended up with a kink in his tail when the war escalated and #3 shut the sliding door on him. Well... we think that's what happened.
My sister has a spaniel that climbs her fruit trees and steals the fruit so the birds don't get them first.

Our cats love the milk left over when you have Weetbix, and I did have one cat that loved licorice. I only found out when I came into the lounge one night and found her with her head in the bag, slobbering away. I sincerely hope it was the first time! The bag was hers after that!
Smooch was whinging one night when I was cutting up broccoli so I gave her the stalk to chew on, thinking she would bugger off. Wrong - see the attached shot. She chewed on it for about 10 minutes, eating some of the leaves and also the hard stalk. Weird!

My old girl Dyna LOVES fruit and it is a race between her and me to get it off the fruit trees in my garden. She will easily get all the lower ones and when they are all gone she stands on her hind legs and, using one leg and paw, will pull branches down to her to get the higher fruit.
Smart eh?
But she doesn't wolf the fruit down. She lies down and holds it between her front paws taking delicate wee bites , chewing and swallowing then turns it and bites again just like a person. If she encounters a bad bit she will spit it out! And she won't eat apple cores! No worries cos my other dog comes along and hoovers the leftovers up!

Bumble bees.
My german sheperad (8 years old) is pretty adept at killing and eating them.
Not sure if bumble bees sting (or bite) but when she attacks them she seams to know to keep her lips back (so its a full on snarm when shes going for them - a big german sheperd attacking a small bee). Anyway .. thats it! :-)

Update on the weird eating habits of our black cat (the one that eats cold asparagus and roasted capsicum). Tonight we had corn cobs, done on the bbq. Couldn't eat all mine so hubby held it for the dog to eat (he nibbles it so cute, with his lips pulled back). While dog is eating said corn, several kernels fall on the floor and black cat swoops in and vaccuums them up in the blink of an eye. Oh, same cat also ate banana muffin today as well. I think he's actually a pig in a cute little black fluffy disguise.

Bran (wolfhound) ate a hole in a kauri door to about 7 or 8 inches diameter .....bitch in heat inside the other room, and another time some gravy beef I left out, 11.5kgs of it. Ace (wheaten terrier) loved to skin and eat hedgehogs, then he'd have a drink and the spines would clatter around in his mouth (the worst noise imaginable), sure to remember some more goodies soon

I always tell people my staffy is a good little ol mutt but after reading this thread and thinking back.....
She's been opened up twice to remove rocks....I dunno she just eats boulders? She's eaten used sanitary items, toys, pens, seat belts, wax crayons etc.
Most of thats behind her now but she will insist on eating my daughters make up and my daughter will insist on leaving it where the dawg can get it.
She often emerges from one of the bedrooms after snacking on mascara n lipstick, looking all inocent like except for the smudged come fook me big boy lips.

My brother's lab ate his wedding ring. My brother has large hands and this was a very big ring. He had taken it off and it was on the kitchen benchtop. Spent the subsequent days sifting through dog poo, with no success. Then one evening the dog had a huge cough and the ring bounced off the wall! Dog and ring both okay.

Our dog yesterday went into my gym bag (brave boy) and took out my i-pod and decided it would make a great chew toy. Will be contacting my insurance company and asking for a claim form

Re-read that a couple of times 'cos I thought you meant dog and dog's ring... then realised that he coughed it out
today, my pet rabbit hopped up on my lap and proceeded to eat most of my lunch (steak n cheese pie), oh, and she hissed and got really aggro when I tried to take it away

Wow, I've heard it called a lot of things, but, hey, no names are necessary.
Hard to visualize, though.
I'm on the wrong track, ay??
