View Full Version : helmet hair hassles

I know this may not be a problem for those of you with more chrome than fuzz on top, but for people like me with a bit of hair, its a real pain in the butt to wear a helmet when your hair is wet/you need to tie it up somehow/you put something in it(gel, mousse, whatever). :argh:
I was wondering what you other haired helmet wearers do to keep your mop in control when you have a helmet to pull on and off all the time.
And also for helmetted people who wear glasses - similar annoyance - feel free to comment also.

I either braid my hair or wear a polar poncho thing that stops it flapping around in the breeze and forming one enormous dreadlock. Tried cutting my hair off once so it wouldn't be a hassle but him indoors was not the happiest about it so had to go to plan B. Can be a hassle braiding or plaiting your own hair but you get it sorted in the end.

#2 clipper cut does the trick for me.
That doesn't really help you much, though, does it?

Yeah wearing glasses can be a pain in the ass.
Just remember.. helmet first, then glasses.
Seconded, I forgot about my glases yesterday and now I have very little skin left on my nose!, Ouch!!

I am still trying to figure out the hair problem, its a work in progress. I usually wear a polo poncho to keep the ends from flapping about at least. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Friends of ours from the states swear by a little silk skull cap thingy (like say a jet fighter pilot) called a 'silk' or silky' or some such that they put on before the helmet.
Since most helmets are wrecked from hair oil degrading the inner bits, it seemed not only a good idea from the cosmetic point of view but a good one from the economic.
As for glasses, yes I do wear them and $%#^ yes it is a pain. No I have no answer except a tough pair of glasses.

I find glasses a bonus, you can flip the visor up at low speed and not get eyes full of bugs, contacts get too much dust on them.

You can tell its summer when you have to pick the bugs out of your teeth. Just in the last few weeks ive noticed the airborne population skyrocket. Just yesterday I got hit around the eye about 5 times, but it was too hot to close the visor :(

I find the pony-tail pulled back over the head and then the helmet on is the best.
I found I didn't move my head around as much when I was tucking the tail into the collar and was getting a sore neck.
Far less problems now and no dreadlocking - bonus :)

I cut my pony tail off (for the 3rd time) when it got so thin and weedy it would NOT dreadlock... sigh...
Shaved my beard off 'cos I looked even dorkier without the pony tail
Sigh....
To think... I used to have a beard I could plait... sob.... What happened?

I tie my hair in a pony tail with the ends looped back up and tucked into the ponytail holder. One thing about wearing a helmet is that it is a great hair straightener - saves a lot of damage to my hair from heating and straightening. I now have to be fashionably late when going out cos I have to go for a ride first to do my hair!!! :niceone:
Sadly I also have to wear glasses - I'm forever stabbing myself in the eye when I put them on through my helmet!

I cut mine down to a 2 so no problem for me now but wifey tucks her hair in to the back of the jacket. Well did when it was long. and so does my Daughter. Her hair is very long. It was fun when I took my Daughter to Hamilton to pick up a car. She could not be bothered doing anything with it when we left home at 4.30am but when we stopped for fuel 270km later it was so badly tangled she had to leave it like that till her mother could work on it that night. Yep I laughed so much I nearly cried. I told he I would cut it off but her boy friend was not amused

I have long hair and glasses!
the glasses are a total bitch with helmets, the hair less so. tying it up in a low ponytail is fine. never encountered any tangling, maybe it is just to start with? :yeah:
I'll have to try the 'helmet before glasses' method
I love my hair!

I love the way my hair looks after I take my helmet off, looks all stylish
I was getting bored of my usual short to medium wax spiked hair, until one day I did it as normal and then wore the helmet and saw what it looked like afterwards, looked great. I wear contacts as well, so no problem there either.
Sorry, I guess that didn't help you all too much.

I never have my hair wet [edit: opps forgot this crucial word!] if I'm gonna ride, helmet hair to the max! I let my hair flap freely out the back of my helmet or sometimes I tie it up in piggy tails.
Sadly though no matter what I do I get helmet hair, so just don't ride to any hot dates ;)

Had a bit of hair poking out and it always got tangled. I've fixed that now (see mullet thread). Still, I found a helmet helped keep my hair a bit flatter and not so wavy. Can't be bothered with gel/wax, I just never use it due to the motorcycling thing....

Short hair rules for solving helmet problems.
Which reminds me - it must be haircut time - Its starting to rub against the helmet when I adjust it.
And I wear glasses most of the time.
Contacts are a hassle when riding for me as I'm pretty photophobic - I have transition lenses which look like sunnies :shifty:
So yeah - helmet, then glasses.
A mate of mine who has long hair has a kind of thin polyester tube type thing which he puts over his head and puts his ponytail in, twists it and then puts the helmet on...

Helmet hair sucks the big one. I tie it back in a pony tail, and then drop it down under poler flesse vest that has a high neck on it.(also stops draughts around neck) there is also something called a neck sock(?) that is a tube that sit's around your neck to stop draughts etc. Can put this over your hair to stop it flapping around. In summer when I didn't need the vest I tied the ponytail at the top, and again at the bottom before dropping it down the back of the jacket. it normally popped out, but at least it didn't dread.
LASIK rocks 4 years now and what an improvment it has made. I still wear sunnies under helmet, love to have the visor up in the summer heat, the smells are unbeliveable.

Got an Xpeed helmet from Energy Honda, AWESOME HELMET! Better than the higher spec higher cost helmets I've owned. The Arai can get stuffed and I see that Nolan makes only shite these days. Nice and snug and holds my glasses where I place them every time. As for the hair, common sense aye! Dry it off before hand, or come around & I'll get the clippers out 4 ya :niceone:

I usually have shoulder length hair.... and when I put the helmet on and off, my hair just so FLAT with no style... the real helmet look lol... so recently I went to a number 3 look. that helps a lot.... but I'm growing it back again.... :argh:
Glasses - I dont wear ordinary glasses but I do wear sunnies when riding....
I have brought many expensive sunnies and I have broken so many of them..... I tend to break one arm of them off.... so I went to the $2 shop and this pair have lasted a year.... I kid you not... no matter what I do to them... they aint broken.
For night riding I went and brought a pair of safety glasses.... so that I can wear glasses without having the visor down. :eek5:
Its a matter of remembering to put on the helmet then the glasses.
taking off the glasses then the helmet off.
I was wearing sunnies one day and a small tiny fragment of metal went into my eye..... 3 trips to the hospital over 3 weeks soon sorted that out....
The metal turned rusty, and they couldnt get it out.... so they got a drill ( a special type of drill) and drilled a hole into my eyeball.... Yep I was wide awake and saw it all happening... rode home with my eye patched over... that was a fun ride home with only eyesite out of one eye....lol :Pokey:

And also for helmetted people who wear glasses - similar annoyance - feel free to comment also.Right - I don't got much hair, but I used to wear sunnies, which fit nicely under my old AGV (but not the X-Vent). Luckily, the X-Vent has a tinted mirror visor, so I don't need to wear sunnies.
However, my lovely wife wears glasses. Firstly, she borrowed a helmet from a woman she works with, who also wears glasses (and also has a tiny head). It was a BMW flip-front, so that fixed the glasses issue, although she still managed to knock 'em off a couple of times putting the helmet on / taking it off.
When we bought her a new helmet last weekend (and a VFR to go with it), we abandoned the idea of a flip-front, after trying on a few, and made sure that here glasses fit OK under a conventional fullface. The Shoei Raid was good for that.
As for the hair, she mentioned her new aquisitions to her hairdresser on Firday, and she cut her hair in a "helmet friendly" style, and also mentioned she should try a product called summat like "Super Big Hair", that will stop the dreaded 'helmet hair'. It was carried by Rodney Wayne salons, till they decided that because one of the Fab Five was endorsing/marketting it, it wasn't in keeping with the image they wanted to project, or somesuch nonsense.
HTH.

Yep I was wearing my sunnies at the time.... and they were the expensive ones too..... so to answer your question.... yep a tiny fragment of metal can get past the sunnies... no matter how much they cost.... It must have flicked up from a car ahead of me from off the road itself. :stoogie:
The eye is great now.... must admit it was fun watching the drill going into the eye and actually hearing the drill ...drilling away....
When they told me they were going to drill into the eye ball... my first thought was sheesh.... I have a electric Makita drill at home... but it is a small battery drill all sterilised.... even the drill piece came in its own sterilised packet....
Tis amazing what they have in the hospital eye clinic... :crybaby:
So if you eye feels all scratching or gratey after being out riding then go and get it checked out.... they put in a knockout drop onto the eyeball itself so that you don't feel a thing... then they put in a solution that shows up any metal on the eye.... :crybaby:
They tried 3 times to scrap it out over the first two visits.. but cos it was so rusty and my eye was sensative to metal that is why they had to drill it out..
So all do be careful, and dont take chances with your eyes.... :confused2

Try a hair net. But at the end of the day if you have a lot of hair it's going to be a hassle.
I seem to recall something about a helmut exemption. Not the way to go in my opinion but if desperate might be worth looking into.

I havn't worn a helmet much yet as I just brought my bike yesterday, but with my pushie if you put heaps of styling mud in, it kept it's shape pretty good even when you wore a helmet. The wella stuff is pretty good, apply it when your hair is dry for best results.

been too lazy to put contacts in lately as it saves time at work not havin to find safety googles and the air cond plays havoc with contacts.
point: when riding at speed i find the air pressure bumping my helmet around bumps glasses and distorts vision ever so slightly. No biggie just kinda distracting.
