Heres the plan guys n gals.Date Change To 29-30 March
Head to Kawhia from east/sth/nth.
Taking roads that suit your skill levels, and bikes ability. Con a few old hands to be your wingmen. Kick back at a comfy bach after a BBQ and drinkies.
Wake up to a brekky organised by the old fulla's. And cruise home Sunday on a different road.
Whadayareckon?

Will post a calender thread if a bit of interest is shown.
Work of $20 per person for food/accom. Bach will sleep about 7 inside. Room for 2-3 2man tents. Shower/Washing/shithouse etc all sweet.
Looking for at least 4-6 250cc newby's to front up.

Bach is about 5km out of Kawhia, (supplies easily available there or Oparau store up the road).
Heaps of short/long gravel roads nearby to enjoy.

It's a bit further south of Raglan, innit? Kewl, that'll mean I get to take SH22 down on the way.

Better still, from Port Waikato, travel down :Pt Waikato Rd, Te Akau Rd, into Kauri Flat, out to hwy22 on Mangiti Rd, and into Raglan. Or turn towards Te Mata/Bridal Veil, and take Te Papatapu, and old Raglan Rd to Kawhia.
80% gravel and in pretty good nick.
Crisis Mangament, Bass, Windboy, and Dave probably know this route well.

Hwy22 into Raglan, and around the coast is another option.
"Kiwi Maps--Waikato", (about $10) will give you a good overview, or the M/cycle atlas(with less detail).:niceone:

Don't forget to mention it has the advantage of being a hot water beach :2thumbsup

Awesome relaxing in that :2thumbsup

A really bad map, but the pink line shows from the end of 22, out to Te Mata, and The Old Raglan Rd to Kawhia.

Raglan is at the top, and Kawhia at the bottom.

Hot water beach it is. I think we can russel up a couple of shovels for those who wish to drink plonk in a personalised tub, while watching the sunset.
Calender link is up and ready.

Hang on, some of those roads are sealed, that'll never catch on!

Best maps I have found, which include road state and names, are the AA maps available from their offices at $3.95.
They are, however, not waterproof and turn to mush in ones pocket...a bit hard to read after that!

Cool, Clints on Kitchen/BBQ duties, I'm on booze allocation, and monitoring and I'm sure there are a few kitchen hands available.
Link rd crossing maybe? Got some nice route ideas for the eastern contingent.:msn-wink:

Link Rd, hwy30 to Kopaki, Kopaki rd to hwy4, short blast up 4 to Tikitiki rd onto hwy3, into Pio Pio for fuel. Up through Mairoa to Waipuna rd, across Te Anga rd onto Hauturu rd, and then Harbour rd around the top of Kawhia harbour, and onto hwy31 to the bach. Nice:2thumbsup

tri boy
18th January 2008, 14:35
Another shocking map, but it will give Clint an idea.:sunny:

Tikitiki,Waipuna, and Hauturu would be a scenic run. Gravel on Waipuna should be have well defined wheel tracks by then.(heavy layer at the time of the WWW run).

Eeeek. I've lost a map to cyber space. (dons space suit, and dives out there).

tri boy
18th January 2008, 15:18
And the final one is a suggested route for those sth of the border. (Naki and further). The waitewhena rd is the one that wasn't ridden on the WWW ride. Follows the bottom of the valley. Meet point could be PioPio.

Ohura can be easily accessed from Forgotten hwy if coming from Stratford, or Tauramanui end.

Would have liked to join you lot and even play pack mule for the littlies. However, we have tickets for the Mission concert that weekend.

Yeah I know, but we bought them before they traded Tom Jones for John Mellenkamp and Jimmie Barnes for Elvis Costello. I reckon I've got grounds for a complaint to the Commerce Commission.

Hopefully a Triumphant weekend rather than a Zuki one.

Sorry bout this guys, but I double booked my weekend.

That is the weekend of the Triumph National Rally near Rotorua, and since I'm a member of the TOMCC Hamilton, its best I front up and help out.
I've missed so many of their meetings the last six mths that I will get my balls chopped off if I fail to attend.
Hope the new date of 29-30/ March is suitable to most.
Humble apologies.

People can always deregister, but it just helps to know who is interested at the time so others can organise ride outs together etc.
We can sort out rooms later on, (hell, Kanny will probably kick out into a tent anyhow):baby:

Final route is unconfirmed at my end. Possibly the old Raglan road that comes out about 5km from the Kawhia, (this might have a few nthern riders joining), or a run out there via Pirongia West Rd/ Okupata Rd.

Lets see, oh right, I need to start herding the chickens.
I have a cunning plan, for those travelling down from Akld, (xer, qkies etc), could you guys possibly choose a spot where you could meet on Sat morning for the ride down. The route I would suggest, is to travel down the coast rd to Raglan, where either some, if not all of the rest could meet up with you at a cafe in Raglan township.
From there one of Waikato crew will guide you to Kawhia on a fairly light ride (remembering that xer is on a RS250).
Clint, offrd, and zukin may wish to meet up with us in Raglan, or alternatively plot a different course into Kawhia.
Early days yet I know, but kicking some routes around will inspire the newer riders. (I hope some can make sense of my earlier maps).
Deanohit plans to stay at chez tri boys fri night to split the ride up on the mighty Zongshen.
So the Hamilton crew looks like tri boy, Kanny, Deanohit agricon,
eastern crew of Clint, Rosie, Offrd, Zukin
Akld crew of Qkies, xer, and hopefully I can convince Crisis or windboy to guide the pack. As you were.:sunny:

Brent,
I'd like to come along - I need as much time on the bike as I can get between now and Oz - but I just don't know yet. If I do show up, I will bring the tent.
For those from Aucks planning to head down; getting to Kawhia in a day is a pretty relaxed run. I recommend heading for the coast via Onewhero because there are at least 3 shingle routes to the water from there, whereas there's only one if you go straight out to Port Waikato and the scenery is mundane by comparason.
Dropped the Ohlins stuff into the DR Wednesday night and hoping to spend this weekend learning about sand on some remote part of Bayleys Beach.

Crisis won't be a problem once he finds out that we didn't go north last weekend - we went down through Waikaremoana again and then back up to the North east - real back blocks stuff and 1000 km for the weekend. Bastard.

Looks ok for me coming now, althought I may only be able to do the saturday, I'll know nearer the time and will bring a tent if staying over.

Might be worth considering some A & B routes on the way down to suit the variety of bikes / rider abilities, or maybe that's a silly idea & too complicated. I'm sure we can arque about on the day.

So, Ohlins are good are they! Sounds like a good ride, I'd love to do some of that....maybe on the way to CCA?

Not silly at all mate. (was thinking along the same lines the other night).
Maybe from Akld, either hwy22 and limestone downs/coast rds are an option.
And from Raglan, either around the coast ,(quite rough for xer's RS), and the other option, seal to Te Mata, and then people can choose between the "slip n creek of death", or Te Papatapu/ Old Raglan Rd, (seal, n reasonable gravel).
The routes can be decided over a coffee in Raglan.
If the nthern crew can get to Raglan by 12.30, coffee food-1.30, leaves 4-5hrs to gentlely cruise to the bach.

There are varying levels of skill an bikes, and this sure isn't going to be a heartbreaker of a ride. All about scenery, fun, and socialising.:msn-wink:

I won't be making the CCA as the bike will be on its way to Oz then. If you have never ridden the Waikaremoana road, it is to adventure bikes what the Mangamuka Gorge is to sports bikes - except there's 95 km of gravel and the views are just inspiring. Oh and the gorge just prior to the start of the gravel is an absolute delight on the big traillie. No moulding titties on the edges of the tyres now mate.

Ah the mighty Zumo. So now you have a good sound technical reason for getting lost.
Actually, we are taking one to Oz. Had it 3 weeks and it fell over. Bit worrying really. Was just a faulty battery and replaced under warranty but it made us think.
We are taking maps and compass now as well.
The Zumo is good gear once you have found your way around the handbook.

Now, about 6-9 months ago, I shot down to Raglan with GiJoe1313. We met up with ZeroIndex and went a little further down some seal, then across a very rough gravel road (massive coarse rocks) through the back of farms (sheep running across the road). The gravel road came out just in Kawhia, a few seconds later we were at the fish & chip shop on the wharf. Is this what you were talking about?

It wasn't too long, maybe 10-20kms perhaps?

Hi
I,ve been following this thread for a couple of weeks and have finally got my bike back on the road after a Eng rebuild and was hoping theres still enough room for another newbie from AKL to join in on this ride, I have a tent so I only need a bit of lawn space if its still spare.
I realise the rides probably getting a bit full So?

Kanny and me popped out to the bach for a get away. (i drove her nuts with my sulky boy attitude. "I'm bored, I'm hungry, etc etc):nono:
But besides all that, things are looking good. I did a bit more exploring, and talked to some locals about different places of interest etc.
I have a nice spot sorted for those who like sunsets, (if the weather plays fair).
Rode a few different roads with Karen to gauge her reaction, so a Sunday morning short ride can be sorted.
Gained info on the state of the Harbour Rd bridge. (still closed, but should be worth checking out Sunday morning. A section sank, and will not be fixed for a month or two, but bikes should be able to cross, maybe........)
There is room for those interested in tenting it, but the rooms/floor space is filling up.
I will PM everyone the exact site details next week, but plan to catch up with the nthern crew in Raglan.
Some photo's from the weekend.

1. Aotea Harbour will make a nice sunset spot.

2. Aotea Rd end.

3. Different angle of top of Kawhia Harbour.

4. just a road.

Bams, ya more than welcome, as is Motu. There is room on the deck for laying out, room for tents, and if the weather gets shitty, we will all be able to squeeze in side.

Food etc is all sorted. pack a sleeping bag, and a towel, but pillows, blankets won't be required. Booze wise, if you have a favourite wine, then maybe bring that. The Operau shop(5km nth is licensed, and open till 8pm Sat at least). Kawhia, is about 3km from the bach, and has a pub, and also a small wine cellar in town. Expect to pay a bit extra due to logistics though.
I will have a good range of breakdown tools available, and also a trailer and safe storage in Hamilton if anything tricky pops up.
Just bring whatever you need for an o/nighter and a camera.

Sounds like a great idea Bass, I have a couple of concerns regarding bikes/ skill levels and suggest we keep it simple for the ride to Raglan pretty much following the coast road and taking our time. My thinking (thats definately a new concept) has been from Pokeno, the sealed road for some (xerses?) too Port Waikato and an option via Onewhero and Klondyke road for more gravelly riders.
Following that, it really has to be follow the coast to the north head of Raglan harbour (all hard packed, good roads) and then loop back around the harbour to Raglan.
This will take 3 to 4 hours allowing for stops and general hilarity and is a reasonable pace.
I would suggest we take the oppotunity to take a few detours if we need to but I would rather decide that after we have ridden an hour or so and everyone feels comfortable (on a DR seat?????).

There you go, a typically loose but manageable plan.

I went through Klondike and down the coast for a few k yesterday. The road from Port Waikato to where the seal starts again at Waikaretu is a bit rough and well corrugated.
I was thinking of all in together as far as the Tuakau bridge and then maybe pointing Xerxes down 22, right at Glen Murray by the transmission mast for his first gravel at Pukerewa road. It is reasonably smooth and well swept from there, whereas I think he would be uncomfortable with the Port Waikato end.

Also, if time might be an issue, the route that I took you through last trip, from Onewhereo to Waikaretu is actually quite a bit quicker than Klondike. However, I guess we could always go the direct route through Te Akau, rather than right down to the harbour, if we find we are running late by then.

Te Papatapu Rd.
And finally Ian's attempt to jump his DR across Aotea harbour bar.

Right then.....for the Ork contingent
In general discussions, it has come up that taking an interesting route and riding at a moderate clip, it takes from 3 to 3.5 hours to go Drury to Raglan. We are planning a fairly sedate pace for this Saturday and so it will take longer.
Now we could take a more direct and less "interesting" route, but that kinda defeats the object of having an adventure bike don't you think?

So the remaining alternative is to get an early start.

Crisis Management gets his way it would seem.

We meet at my place (holler if I haven't already PM'd the address and phone numbers) at 8.00 am and roll out at 8.30.
We will see you then or see you at Kawhia - your call.

Waikato crew to meet at "Shell Service Station". Cnr Te Rapa Rd and Pukete Rd.
(opposite the big flash New World Shopping place), no later than 9.45am Sat.
Muzzle, if you want a bit of floor space Fri night, PM me. Deano is staying, and we might pop up to the Hospital to say G'day to Andrew Greer who is stuck there.:niceone:
Mattresses and 40 odd stubbies are at the batch. Looking good.
Kawhia low tide is approx 8.50pm Sat night, 9.00am Sun morning, so maybe a morning squirt on the sand.
Any other Q's PM, or call me.

Lalle Sihgn M/cycle's in New Delhi can hire Enfields, Porters, and camping gear to you cheaply. (even a mechanic if need be).
Good luck getting to ride round the Taj.
Large river delta on one side of it, and a heap of immaculately cared for gardens on the other side. Well worth taking the train to Agra, just for the experience.
One thing you will learn is the food is delicious, but doesn't stick around long.
Quick release Velcro pants would be the answer.

And as for the bridge. Jesus H. Christ. I caught myself looking down halfway across that skinny little plank section. Water is a long way below, especially when there's no room to put your feet down!

Amidst the frequent moments of heart-thumping terror (in addition to those listed above was coming downhill on gravel, changing down gears whilst the road refused to catch up with the engine and the brakes did nothing except lock wheels), that was magic fun. Gorgeous scenery, the wonderful sound of a dozen singles echoing off the hills. And let's face it, banking over on a sportsbike on a perfect road at illegal speeds has nothing on blasting uphill on a skinny piece of gravel road, arse-end skipping all over the place whilst you stand on the pegs and wind it through the gears... Sprotsbikers don't know what they're missing!

Huge thanks to Triboy and Kanny (sans Bumblebee! :() for putting on a magic weekend and putting up with us all. Great to meet the rest of you too, you're all a right laugh.

It was priceless seeing Clint dump the 640 in the stream, then go back and stand in the stream to act as catcher for Rosie - and she sailed through without a problem! I hope you get a lot of mileage out of that one Rosie...should be worth permanent dish washing duties for a couple of months at least.

It was a good days ride for me,350km there and back.Got to see some bikes and people - and prizes for xerxesdaphat and deanohit, proving that the latest and greatest bike is not necessary for having fun.Not to mention a certain XT600 with no matching parts.I hope there is a prize for noisiest bike.

I spent quite a bit of time behind Tom getting covered in dust, and I gotta say was impressed with his riding, considering the bars and tyres.I saw one major moment on a flat straight piece of road, but well recovered.Safe and smooth riding...and so am hesitant with my advice on improvement - use a bit more of the road, this will smooth out the riding even more, and get you out of some of the nasty thick stuff, reducing buttock clenching. You are a throw back - doing what you are doing is how we learned how to ride and fix our own motorcycles 35 years ago....refreshing to see the can do attitude and no moaning.

It was a tyre testing ride for me,I'm really happy to have a good back tyre on again (no DOT tyres on my bike now)....but my half worn rear tyre fitted last week is now 3/4 worn,a couple more rides and it'll be done.Still very impressed with my front K180....for what looks like a road tyre it does better than a knob.

use a bit more of the road, this will smooth out the riding even more, and get you out of some of the nasty thick stuff, reducing buttock clenching.

Thanks! I was a bit worried about using the whole road, to be honest; changing wheel tracks was a little bit fiddly (I know, give it heaps of gas), and I was shit-scared of meeting a Landrover full-bore in the middle of a corner and not knowing how to get over far left again in time. I know the straight-road incident you mean; I think I felt the front-end start to sledge in some thick gravel, which made me panic and let go of the throttle, making it worse. Seems to me that most problems in gravel riding can be solved by pinning the throttle

Amazing to watch you fly up the hillside, floating and dancing on top of the road. Scary shit. I didn't realise something with only two wheels could do that :sweatdrop

I've got a CM200 which I reckon with a new set of tyres would go pretty well off road.. may have to consider pulling through with it so I can join you guys on one of these rides.
Yep, saw your bike there mate, those bars should be just the right height for when your standing on the pegs! :2thumbsup

Tip from Clint: Don't turn up to the test on your BMW

But seriously, the actual riding in the full licence test is very easy. The sorts of things that are likely to catch you out are silly technicalities.

So, make sure you have a suitably sized bike for the test - with an L plate attached. And WOF and registration.
Fill the bike with fuel, and check the lights, indicator, horn etc are working (and no cracked/broken indicator lenses etc).
Turn up to the test a wee bit ahead of time, and have your licence with you.

Ask the tester about the 70km/h thing - the full licence test has a section at 100km/h, but you are on your learners so, theoretically shouldn't do over 70. Ask the tester if there will be a 100km/h section, and ask what speed you should be doing.

Stick to speed limits. If you are on unfamiliar sections of road, keep a good lookout for changing speed limits. Find out if the bike you'll be on has a wildly inaccurate speedo.

Indicate well ahead of time. Indicate when you change lanes, Indicate when you pull out from (or into) a parking space, indicate left just as you exit a roundabout.

Do very obvious head checks - to look for traffic, looking in your mirrors etc. Some testers ignore this, but some don't. Look over your shoulder before you pull into traffic or change lanes.

Put both feet on the ground when you stop at stop signs - making it obvious you came to a complete stop. Make sure you know all the give way rules (some can be a bit obscure). Most of my full licence test involved going through a wide variety of intersections.

Do not lose the testing person. If you become separated in traffic etc, pull over and wait for them.

Try to follow their instructions carefully. You shouldn't get failed for taking a wrong turn, but it's better when things run smoothly.

You need to be able to do a U-turn without putting your feet down. You can probably do this already, but if you normally put one foot out, make sure you practise feet-up u-turns. On the unfamiliar 250cc bike you will presumably be borrowing for the test.

At some point during the test you'll need to talk about the hazards you have seen. Just about anything that moves can be classed as a hazard - including the testing person following you in a car. Some testers may want a reasonable amount of detail "The red car could have gone straight through the stop sign" etc.

For the duration of the test wheelies are not your friend :devil2:

Having said all of that, my full licence test was very easy and the tester wasn't concerned about half the things above. But you don't know that until after the test, so it pays to err on the side of caution.

Good luck! I'm sure you will be fine.
