Supermarket shopping on your bike. How many people use their bike to do their food shopping each week/fortnight whatever?

Past month or so I have been packing the mighty ZX with tank bags and backpacks.. with the overflow bags on the mirrors.

Get a few odd looks but does not bother me, I am more concerned with how all of you get around another one of life's 'chores'.

...and that is just shopping day. You should see me try and ride along on laundry day... feel like santa on a bike... gah...

I don't use the motorbike every time I shop, sometimes I use the pushbike instead :shit:
If I don't need heavy stuff like beer, I'll often take the motorbike. The motorbike park is right outside the door, so it would be silly not to. And since I'm limited to the size of my panniers, I don't end up buying lots of crap that wasn't on the list.

But a washing machine Dan ... its so much more practical! .... We use the bikes for shopping when we have to pick up odds and ends .. but never for a full shop ... we just get too much!

I used to use my Nifty 50 to go and get KFC, was a tad tricky riding with one hand trying not to spill my drink!!

Yes, VIP parking at the supermarket is certainly handy!

I always stand next to my bike with all the shopping in the trolley next to me while I have a smoke.

...you can just tell that people walking/driving past are going "how the smeg is he going to get that all home!"

Nope, my place does not have a place for a washing machine - nor do I own one.

bathtub comes in handy for that, but take large items to launderette.

I do some shopping from time to time on the bike. Easy parking and I can fit a reasonable amount in the trusty (Oxford?) expander bag.

Yep, but they need a credit card.. or at least a bank account. I dont have or want either.

Hmmm,
I don't use the bike much for shopping, The Scooter on the other hand I use to carry all sorts of things. :)

My personal best so far is transporting a full sized electric pedestal fan, I got a few funny looks and had to lock the oscillate function mid ride as the fan was making that lovely clicking sound.

Hmmm that reminds me..... I must pop back into my local and chat with the manager.... before xmas she said to came back in the new year and that she would get a 'BIKE PARK' out front for all us riders.... cool huh.

I always doing my grocery shopping on my bike..... they love to watch me pack so much into the backpack..... Lou paper tied on the pillion seat and sometimes have the bread hanging off the backpack in the bags provided by them.

Its the look of shock from the car drivers on the road that gets me :shit:

Gees, cant have done much for stability, you would have been carrying more than twice the amount oil the poor scoot was designed to.

I do it every so often.

If I have the BMW, it's easy of course.

Otherwise, large items (Speights, f'instance) bungy cord to the seat. Rest in bags hanging from the mirrors, or two sets of bags tied together and across the bike, as a tank bra, or similarly at the front of the seat (sit behind my legs).

Amazing what one can carry on a bike.

I just double-bag the plastic bags of groceries and dangle them off my arms as I ride home. Works well on a bike like Betty with flat naked bars rather than low clip-ons.

When I was house-sitting on my own I did all my shopping on my bikes.

I moved flat on the SV.

I might have had to transport a vaccum cleaner once but I killed it trying to get motorcycle grease out of the carpet :o

In my new place the flat bitch does all the big stuff cos she controls the funds.

Didn't have a car or car licience for ages so had to load up the old pack. Had some wicked loads sometimes and it wasn't what you'd call fun biking. Used to be able to wedge a 2L coke between the screen and the dash on my old RG250.

If you're gonna do something as boring as grocery shopping you may as well use the car.

If you are shopping at countdown, I can see why you do not require a bank account...

Little shops are done on the whichever I have with me. Big shops are done on the scooter.

I can confirm $200 fits in or on a scooter without dramatic license being issued.

Back when I had my RG150, I was nominated for a food run at a little get together - we were getting Subway. When I actually got to subway, I realised that I had forgotten to bring a bag of any sort. So I got the dude at subway to double bag the subs and made my way home after securing them on the back :ride:

The extra petrol to get me to a cheaper supermarket would outweigh any savings...

oh and why the smeg should I pay for some suit wearing ponce to hold my money... then charge me for the privilege of removing it or even looking at it.

why dont you just do your shopping online, turns up on your doorstep later that day or the next, easy as really and cost is minimal, any small extras you may need i.e not the 12 pack of loo rolls, will fit in your pack

for years i only owned a motorbike and did all my shopping on it. Bought huge blinds once and hubby had to sit on back holding it down the side of bike and trying very hard to not have it turn into a wind sail on him LOL. But children came along and i found it too impossible having baby seats and shopping on the bike, so a car got involved in the deal too. Will shop little bits on the bike, but have u tried to shop for 5? it just won't fit in the packs any more.

Your supermarkets have bike parks? :gob: We're lucky enough to own the bikes and a car so we just take the car.

Depends what I happen to be in/on at the time. For big shops, I use the cage.

I use to do my shopping fortnightly and go around the differant car yards in the area and take one for a test drive for just long enough to do my shopping.

When my cage got anally penetrated last year I had to do all my grocery shopping on the bike for a while. Employees of the local asian market tried to hide their smiles watching me taking off with bags full of fruits and vegies but they failed miserably to do so.

Yep thats the one.. it usually says "no parking" or something along those lines for stupid cagers.. there is so many signs and light signals for cars.. good thing there is none for bikes

I do the same for the same reason and yet somehow every once in a while a piece of random(?) crap somehow manages to sneak in.....

I won't do weekly shops as I've found that half of what I buy that I plan to use just ends up lying around not used. So I just go every couple of days and get what I need at the time.

Still I always have my bungee cords stashed under the pillion seat just in case....

don't have :baby: so that's one (or more) less to worry about.

Use the bike for small to med shops. As sylvia park is my local supermaggot, you've either gotta go at non-busy (and generally inconvenient) times, or take the bike and park right by near the doors. Can always throw on the saddlebags if needed.

Also, FYI to all bikers who frequent slyvia park, we finally have a proper bike park! the old taxi stand up by the westpac and countdown is now bike parking. No need to get hassled by the parking-police security wankers or joe public who is jealous that you can park anywhere :niceone:
