For some time I have been looking to replace my Zeus flip-front, a great helmet (if a bit noisey) that has served me well. However a ding with a rock on the Porika Track has hastened a replacement. Ideally I want a flip-front with a peak that is independant of the visor, but can't find such a thing.
So in the meantime I have opted for 2 helmets - a Grex RD1 for adventure riding (thanks to the KB members who I quized on these). And for touring, a flip-front with internal sun visor but will wait till the new Nolan N103 is released before I decide which one.
The Grex RD1 helmet arrived today & initial impressions are good. Grex is made in Italy by Nolan. Mine is large size @ 1440gm weight. Features include hinge covers if peak removed, 2 brow vents & 2 chin vents plus seperate visor (fog) vent. All vents can be closed & these plus chin strap latch can all be operated with (summer) gloves on. Also has a Lexan visor that seals well with good field of view (I prefer visors over goggles as I need to avoid bee & wasp stings, especially in the face). And the price is only $199.00.
Negatives are no removable lining & peak isn't adjustable. Plus I was dissapointed no base colours - I prefer all white or all red for visibility safety. So opted for the mix with Yamaha Blue, at least to match one of the bikes.
Went for a quick blat this evening to try it out. Called in on timg & scored some birthday cake too - Happy Birthday Tim.
Quite impressed with the Grex so far. Not very noisey, plenty of room for sunnies & peak worked well coming home into low sun. No hint of peak catching wind draft either, tested by standing & turning head @ open road speeds. Vents worked well but real test will be an adventure ride involving a bit of physical excertion.
