View Full Version : YOUR BIKE: Why did you choose it? Why is it YOU?!

Hamel

Theory is: we choose a bike that suits our needs but also reflects our personality, how we see ourselves. Four questions:
1) What is your bike
2) Why did you choose it
3) Why is it you? (and, out of curiosity)
4) Money no object, What would you ride?

Only fair I begin!
1) Highly modified '89 900ss: 944 Vee Two motor with Flatslides, 916SPS clutch, Supermono Carbon Fairing, Carbon 916 seat, ZXR front end. Everything I could change, changed! Only stock bit is rear wheel.
2) Someone else got it started, loved the concept (I used to work for Britten)
3) Love 90* V-Twin grunt & noise. SANO! (Same As No Other)
4) Ducati 1098R (Customised to bits of course)

1) A beautifully abused 1998 RG150ES...she was mint till i learnt to ride on her.
2)Lightweight, great looks. Easy enough for a noob to learn on *in hindsight two strokes are not learner friendly! lol* and has enough power to kep me happy till my full. Plus two strokes are a dandy to repair if i break it, on the downside they break themselves a lot lol
3) They say opposites attract, so of course if i'm laid back and easy going, I had to get a firecracker of a bike. Can never find the right gear to ride in as she always wants to go faster. She'll corner like a bat out of hell, and until you get used to the fact she'll go horizontal quicker that britney spears, she's butt clencher. Beautiful *well in my eyes, shes a bit banged up now*, light and the smell....mmm i love the smell of two stroke in the morning, plus it comes with an anti cage smoke screen. hehe, in my eyes she's perfect.
4) If i had my way, i would like to design my own bike, if i had unlimited money though, i would design my own bike.... a bike that was practical and fun...a future streetfighter me thinks. In fact i'll get started on the drawings tomorrow.

Edit: In one word why is my bike me.....fun. The rg is a heck of a lot of fun.

Oh, good question(s).

1, Triumph Speed 4
2, I wanted a "my first post 250 bike" 600, was not all that keen on fairings, wanted something potentially halfway tourable and halfway comfortable. Was looking at early 2000 CBR600's because they're kinda comfy for sportsbikes. But then the trumpet came up and I decided to just ... y'know ... get it.
3, I like that you can mess around with the suspension, and that it makes a difference. It makes an awesome noise. I don't have the time for touring and, in all likelihood, it'd make a bit of a shitter tourer. It seems to be sprung too softly. It still makes me smile, I'm still learning about it, it's an awesome bike.
4, Strangely, an 848 seems tempting, now.

1) What is your bike 2007 Hyosung GT250R
2) Why did you choose it Price - Looks - Easy to Learn on
3) Why is it you? - Its simple for a learner and reliable
4) Money no object, What would you ride? Haven't got that far - check back in about 6 months

1) '00 R1100RT
2) Weather protection. Riding 40kms down the motorway at 4am in freezing rain on a GN250 is not as much fun as it sounds.
3) I don't mind being different. Love the tank range, the quiet, the warmth, the comfort, and it handles great (for a 280kg bike).
4) A K1200LT for touring and a 250cc GP bike for trackdays.

1/ 1998 Ducati 600ss.
2/ It's a Ducati, It's reliable, it was cheap.
3/ It makes a lot of noise but when you get right down to it there's not too much substance really
4/ Ducati Desmosedici of course.

1) What is your bike:- 2000 Honda CBR600F4
2) Why did you choose it:- a)Honda. b)It's a 600. c)It had to be a sprotsbike. d)A racer whose opinion I respect said "Sligtly boring but the best all-round 600 you can get". e) This model and the '01 F4i were the last of the comfortable CBR sports tourers. After that they went to the RRs
3) Why is it you? (and, out of curiosity):- a)Honda (I'm ex National Advert & Product Manager for Honda NZ (cars) b)I have confirmed that I can kill myself on a 600 so I don't want anything faster c)Lighter bikes are more nimble, manouverable and fun c)1:29 and 200kmh on the back straight at Manfield without really trying says it does stuff ok - wanting more is just being greedy.
4) Money no object, What would you ride:- The same. I don't see spending more than $6,500 on a bike as a good use of munny. I'd buy a set of Ohlins and some Oggy Knobs though.

A very well-conceived thread!

:niceone:

Let's see, now.

1. GSX1400 K7

2. Comfort; footpeg ergonomics being the prime consideration. My knees are too rooted to do all my riding on sportbikes.

3. The smooth airflow over the naked bars instead of the noisy buffeting of a sportbike fairing and the big comfy-couch seat that happily accommodates me and SWMBO on thousand-kilometre rides without a twinge are what I'm all about. Not to mention the luxurious feeling of the buttery-smooth 1400cc inline four's fist-of-God torque wafting me silently up hills at a hundred miles an hour.

4. Believe it or not, I'd still have a GSX1400. I honestly can't think of anything else, at any price, which matches my requirements for a Main Bike so perfectly. I'd tart it up with full Givi hard luggage, Ohlins front and rear and some mild intake-and-exhaust fruit, but otherwise leave it untouched.

I would, of course, add a Desmosedici RR for trackdays, but I guess that goes without saying for everyone here. I also wouldn't mind a Brutale 910R for when I wanted something lighter to commute on or take out for a low-stress thrash around the Coromandel.

1. 2007 zuki m109r 1800cc

3. easy to be customized to what i want in a bike.
4.got the bike i want

Yup. My 600's have been awesome bikes that can keep up with anything else on the road. They look great, they need the same amount of maintenance and lead me into as much trouble as its safe to get into. My first one handles better than anything else I (and others) have ridden and that was a $3,500 1990 model. You cannot do a 1000km ride in a day on a 2007 CBR RR model ... people's backs are not made strong enough.

Why spend $13k and get exactly the same end result? You don't necessarliy get better from newer.

I like this game...

1. GSXRthou (K2) and CBX 1000.
2. The k5/6 thou's are too small, a Fireblade is too sanitised and slow, I don't want a Kwaka (it's not easy being green). Italian cars are hard enough, I want a bike that starts most of the time. CBX wasn't a choice, it was more of a calling, like being a monk without the celibacy and silence requirements.
3. The gixer is loud, nasty, a handful, too much of everything and really high rent mentally. Just like me. The CBX is refined - nothing is stock on it, it's more like art. I like that.
4. Rachel McAdams. Or Paris Hilton (kidding, you'd need to hold a shotgun against my head - actually, I'd probably beg for the bullet...).
4. Seriously. I'd own what I own now, I can pretty much afford anything I want (could sell the car, the dog and buy it). If I could spend money on anything, I'd hire Keith Code and Laguna Seca for a month. My bikes are fast enough, it's the dumb ass monkey that's slow.

1) What is your bike
First one FXR150
second 1983 virago 500
third 1990 CBR600
NOW GPZ500

2) Why did you choose it
1st - cos it looked cute and was under 250 and was affordable
2nd - cos it rode great and was kinda laid back
3rd - cos it was grubs old bike and lovely and sporty
4th - I sat on one and feel in love

3) Why is it you? (and, out of curiosity)
1st - cos it was afffordable
2nd - I just love the sit position ... she was great to ride ... and had a whole lotta personality - but on long trips it hurt my back badly
3rd - cos it was used by Grub (heheh) .... nah I love the thought of speedie .. but on long trips it hurt my shoulders ...
4th - on long trips it doesn't cause pain ... the sit is just right .... and she goes and goes and goes ... just like the tractor she is.

4) Money no object, What would you ride?
a new GPZ 500 ... would have to import it though they no longer sell new in NZ.

Why shouldn't he be ... .I agree ... I don't need something that will instantly devalue as soon as I sit on it ... as soon as you leave the shop goodbye a huge percentage of the price ... also if a bike is well maintained they go extremely well.

1) 1986 VFR (NC21) and I'm another 'smoker with an rg150

2) Vfr- was looking around at nc30's, rode one of them and loved it, nice bike but far too expensive for what it is then I chanced across the nc21 for real cheap and while it may be a honda and ghey its pretty good bang 4 buck.

rg150- wanted a streetstock bike but I love riding it so much I ended up Wofing it and using it on the road heaps too!

3) Honda isn' really me, good bike but i prefer less sporty for day to day stuff. the rg is kinda cool because its go a bit of a wolf in sheeps clothing effect when people hear that is just a wee 150...

4) I kinda like that aussie drysdale V8 kinda thing but I would probably build my own too.
prob a gs500 for normal road use,
Homemade formula3 racebike (or heavy modded 250 twostroke)

And a few old classics in the dream garage, DBD34 Goldstar and a whole pile of other brit classics.
Racing a goldstar would also be coold and VERY expensive...

1 - Hyosung GT250 - with some mods
2 - Needed something learner legal...after that it was a) Size b)Looks c)Price to newness ratio. and it had a warranty.
3 - Love the V-Twin sound...even if it is only a small one, and the more relaxed look of a naked bike.
4 - Bit hard to say till I can actually have a go on them, but based on looks either:
a) Triumph Speed Triple
b) MV Agusta Brutale 910R
c) Buell Lightning XB9SX
d) KTM Superduke

1) What is your bike
98' HD Wideglide - customised

2) Why did you choose it
It chose me. A mate outbid me for it at Turners then rebuilt it, made it shiny and quick then put it on the market and I snatched it up.

3) Why is it you? (and, out of curiosity)

It is the bike I always wanted since giving away flying (heart attack), its' got the legs for long 2-up trips, is very quick and nimble, is now my customised dream come true and has the vanity appeal for the poser in me (being honest!).

4) Money no object, What would you ride?
I'd trade up to an 08' HD Electraglide Ultra to give my missus the ultimate rear-seat ride and to force me to settle down to old-man status while not losing the noise, bling or too much performance.

1) What is your bike
Gina, the mighty GN250E

2) Why did you choose it
Cheap! and been recommended by experienced riders as a good learner bike.
Unfortunately i later found out it was the old ones that people raved about, and the new chinese built ones arent as good, but she still does me well for most things.

3) Why is it you?
Coz she may not be pretty or fast, but she get's the job done ;)
As my mate always says "Not pretty, but effective..."

4) Money no object, What would you ride?
Hrm, not sure. Haven't thought quite that far ahead. I am planning on getting a middleweight cruiser later this year. They're my idea of biking, getting around the place in comfort and style. Plus my battered body wouldn't handle the sprotsbike-squat riding position for more than 5 minutes.

1) What is your bike

1996 Honda Hornet CB250, twin pipes, anodised bling, LED bling

2) Why did you choose it

Test sat on a heap of other chew fiddies, brother and mate recommended a naked style and I drove out to Coromandel to test sit on the only hornet available at the time and bought it straight away.

3) Why is it you? (and, out of curiosity)

It felt right, soon as you sit on the seat and grasp the handlebars ... you just know. It was red, red is my fave colour. The more I rode it, the more I binned it, the more I maintained it and the more I blinged it, I fell into obsessive compulsive mode.

4) Money no object, What would you ride?

1) What is your bike -'88 GSX600F
2) Why did you choose it - always liked the first gen big '80s plastic full-faired bikes. Wanted one when I was 16 then - or even better a CBR600F. But got this as particlar one as it was very, very cheap. Hasn't put a put wrong.
3) Why is it you? - old, bit shabby, but looks aren't everything and it can still show the kids a thing or two. Focus on comfort and touring over speed, reliable, cheap to run - well, it's me all over.
4) Money no object, What would you ride? - ah, well, I tend to collect stuff, and if I had the cash I'd get an ultimate tourer (A Busa and a Honda pan-type bike), sprot (Surely a plastic fantastic '80s Duke, a CBR600RR or Gixxer Sixxer) to start with. Then I'd consider my option, and really get buying.

Why? Because I want more bike companies to create bold designs, and hopefully buying this bike will encourage them.

Also, I just moved to Australia and the roads here seem ideal for a big, heavy, and long motorbike.

1) B-Model ZX9R (Rebuilt after being written off Boxing day of '06)
2) Used to have a ZX6R of the same year so it was time for an upgrade + it was the best priced bike with reasonble acceleration + needed a big bike for reliable touring that doubled as a work vehicle.
3) Good repuatation for being reliable and honest.
4) '04 or '05 ZX10R
