Guy at the shop told me my bike was restricted 1-3rd... Said I should get a tre? Anyone know where to get one?
Cheerio!

This is a good one as it also has a gear indicator. Just plug it into the gear position sensor and away you go.
There is a distributor in Australia. Don't know of anyone in NZ carrying them.

Jamie you can make them up yourself pretty simple. just wiring a resistor up in to a circuit on the bike

Don't bother mate. They are restricted in 1-3rd but its only in early throttle opening stages. I had one on the K6 600 and removed it. Couldn't notice any difference at all. Waste of money in my opinion.

It's true the difference isn't large, but it is there.
I noticed the throttle was crisper and more responsive when initially cracking it open and starting to wind it on. (in the lower gears of course) It was like giving the bike a little bit more bottom end power.
When I think how much trouble I used to go to to get a more responsive and crisper throttle (Many hours of workshop time with a good mechanic synchronising carbs ond so on) any little improvement is worthwhile to me.

Depends on the bike. GSXR1000's and Hayabusa's show the most improvements, I have know people who have put them on SV1000's and GSXR750's and removed them because there was little, if any, gains to be had.
And don't buy one, just get the spec's off the 'net and build one. Very cheap.

Okay....green bling for the first person [excluding Jrandom] that explains why motorcycle company's restrict there bikes in the lower gears at lower throttle openings!!

Yip it's easy to do it yaself, 6.8k resistor between the pink and black wires that come from the gps.(there's 3 in the loom, leave the blue one alone, that's ya neutral light) chop em off on the gearbox side of the resistor (so the pooter sees the resistance) leave the blue intact......done.
Is it efi?, it doesn't work on carb'd bikes...

Dude is yours a suzuki gsx1200ss Ie one of those black beasts?

Yip.. GS1200SS... Ive installed a GSX1400 air filter (bigger opening) and up'd the main jet as per other chaps on the site and it is a completly different bike... However the chap at Hamilton Motorcycles told me about the TRE.. I know my bike has the 180k limiter from factory, is this in the same circuit as the 1-3 restriction?
DeathInc, the bike is carb.
Thanks Cajun/Dmntd.

I'm working on piss poor memory here but I think the list of mods available are huge for your bike.

sort of.
and besides dipshits and bucket boys answers...its also to protect the engine from igniting the fuel/air preignition in hot conditions...during low speed running...as modern motors run such high compression... so cruising through town a on really hot day...low air flow through the motor...is the type of senario that could cause pre ignition detonation.

hmmm... interesting. So not advancing the ignition as much in the lower gears is a bit of a poor man's knock sensor? And this would explain why some people report their engines sometimes running a bit rough with a TRE fitted?
As I usually run my bike on 98 octane, will this given me more of a safeguard against pre ignition in such situations?

Not much chance of pre-ignition in most modern engines (the mixture being ignited by a hot spot in the cylinder, not the sparkplug), but as poos very rightly points out...detonation, basically the mixture exploding in the cylinder, not an even flame front. That's what the "pinking" noise is, lots of explosions happening in your motor... and a very big enemy to it

Mate you live in Dunners...it never gets hot enough so you will have to worry:cool:I fitted a TRE moons ago with no problems ever, made the mistake once of riding the bike from one end of Dunedins main street to the end, must have got every red light even the bloody fan came on.
