Just a little poll to see who likes riding solo.

I never really been into riding with others. Although I have a couple of mates who feel the same, but we are comfortable riding with each other. Strange I know.

I used to ride solo all the time, wouldnt have it any other way.

Now sadly I struggle to find the motivation to ride unless im with mates.

I'm more of a social rider - I like riding with a mate or two generally speaking. Not so much a fan of the group rides as it can get a bit confusing... you don't know where everyone is and then suddenly someone flys past you without warning or something like that. Don't get me wrong, group rides are cool, but you've got to have your wits about you, it's less relaxing.

Ideally for me I'll go riding with one mate at a time, maybe two, and have a good time. I don't mind riding on my own sometimes too, but like Morcs said I sometimes struggle to find the motivation unless I'm riding with mates.

i definitely like group rides, but i tend to choose them a little carefully. Dont want to be in a group raising hell and attracting the :Police:, but thoroughly enjoy heading off on a little adventure with a few decent folks.
Tend to like smaller groups better, easier to keep together and less hassles overall, and better conversations at the stops :niceone:

Lol the no noobs one has the most votes...interesting. There is a hate of noobs lol I think it's great as a noob when a group of riders accepts me riding along with them. It's how ya make friends :D *I don't dick around tho, pretty nana*. Oh anyone know of any good solo cruising routes for a day away from the stress of everyday life?

well as a noob i hate riding in a group
too much pressure to ride at the speed others ride at

would much rather get more experiance under my belt before showing my inexperiance to my peers

dont care if its six or sixty.
I love the sound, the sight, the karma.
Nothing like the sound of a large group of bikes in confined areas
such as tunnels, main streets, mountain passes, gourges!

It is good to be somewhere in the pack, and know that you have to be totally aware of whats going on , not only in front, but behind and beside you.

Solo riding is good for covering distance in as shorta time as possibile, but group riding is the experiance I enjoy the most.
Noobs, old boys, what ever, little bikes or big bikes, its the same.

There is no other recreational event that comes even close to riding.
No other gathering is the same as a bikers gathering.
No other social group encompases such a vast spectrum of ages, ethnic groups, social standing, income brackets, love, hate, egotistical barsteds and quiet fellows.
So riding with a group offers me the avantage of meeting people I would never meet anywhere else in society, and be able to talk to them with a common denominator. Bikes! Cages, Cops! lol

Group riding No 1 for me, just cant get enough of it :argh:

I really don't like riding with n00bs. Some n00bs can't handle the fact that you just don't jump on a bike and end up being fucken good as soon as your arse hits the seat.

I don't mind waiting for n00bs or even helping them learn, I just don't want it on my mind if they crash, because I would feel like it was my fault cause they were riding way outside of their ability, trying to keep up. (the ones that have that mind set)
So I just remove the problem. I don't ride with n00bs

Ive mates with Harleys, some with jap cruisers some with old jappas like mine and some with new bikes,we may all set off together but theres no pressure to wait for anyone etc,if going a long way we all seem to meet up at points along the way,i find the look out for the guy behind you thing tedious,to busy trying to stay with the prick in front of me.

But the best (by far) is riding with your partner.

I enjoy riding in small groups, but I like to know who I'm riding with. Don't mind the odd n00b. (They're not all odd!)
I feel it's very important for n00bs to ride with more experienced riders, but they must be aware that they don't have to ride outside their comfort zone.

I've clocked up most of my milage solo, but I do enjoy the group rides - just the unknown knob factor is the prob. I love riding with all sorts, just as long as they don't ride in such a way that makes me :eek5: :dodge:

I prefer to ride with one or two others at most. Have done a couple of KB rides in the past but wouldn't rush out to do another.

Give me a group of 2-8 riders all on the same wavelength over riding alone any day. Great fun.

Give me riding alone over riding with 1 fucktard in a group any day though.

Well i do like group rides, and i like riding by myself. If i screw up (without binning) by myself nobody else sees (which is good) On the other hand if ina group you get to share the out doors with a mate, which is cool.

As Subike said nothing like the sound of a big group of bikes thru Valleys etc.

Hah! Where I live I can see the main road north out of town. Every weekend all you can hear is groups winding up SH1. The sound of the bikes carries to my house really well. Lucky for me they can't hear me call them bastards.:bye:

I like riding in groups but it is better if you have 3 or 4 riders who can pace each other. I dont mind waiting for noobs. I hate picking bikes out of drains. I like the social riding.

In saying that, if I really want to get somewhere in a hurry I will go alone. Group riding and the stops can get excessive.

I don't mind either way, either in a group or riding solo. (But if in a group I prefer riding with people I know and have riden with before...) I don't mind riding with newbies and or others as like as if they don't act like twats on the road and around me and or my friends...

Have riden with harleys, cruisers jappas, sports, tourers, and don't give a rats what you ride.

I do tend to keep an eye on the rider behind me, and if I loose sight for a period of time I will pull up and wait to see whats up and if still no sign and get that gut feeling turn around. Even more so since Phadrus had his misshap on our way to the Kiwibiker Rally at the Staging Post last year, and BotB early last year... in both cases they were behind me (and with Botb she was 2 or 3 bikes behind me and noticed she was MIA...)

So I would hope that the rider in front of me is keeping an eye on whats happen behind as well, just in case I have a off... (most of the time now I usually ride as TEC)

Good points. I second the "it sucks when there is a tosser in the group" point, group riding is fun unitl then. Riding beyond ability sucks harder that a pornstar, like a mate said once, lock your ego in a box. :niceone: Getting some solo miles under my belt though would be sweet.

Solo is good, but it can get lonely. I prefer small groups of 2-6 or so.
There are two or three riders in the Hawkes Bay that I 'click' with. You know, ride the same lines and same speeds, stop at the same places etc. It's great when you have this 'chemistry' together which just happens.

Just like riding the bike fullstop. After years of riding solo or with just 1 or 2 mates (yep, that's all of 'em) it's been nice to go for quite a few rides with decent sized groups. Like others have said, you just have to have the right attitude - everyone's got a different pace so the group must make everyone's ride enjoyable. Also, everyone has to get home in one piece (bikes included).

A large percentage of the "offs" and worse reported on this site relate to group outings. While it is customary to slag off cagers, bikers are not averse to mercilessly taking out themselves and others, as the occasion demands. Be careful out there.

I don't mind if it's just a few people but big groups are a pain in the arse.

Meeting lots of other folk on bikes is great but it's better when you're all stationary rather than one big group on the tarmac at 100kph.

Most of my riding has been done on my own, and only recently have i had the opportunity to ride with a small group (no more than 4). As a relative noob myself I have been very appreciative of these more experienced riders who have encouraged me, not made me feel like i have to outride my ability, and who have made me feel part of the group not just a "hanger-on". I think i'd avoid large group rides for a while yet.

I ride to work and back by myself. And I find this is a good thing, as I can practice things on the way to work and if needed repeat them on the way home.

I like riding with a group however, on the weekend rides, and the Wednesday Night rides.. Purely to garner as much info, advice as possible. As the social side of grp riding is phenomenal...

Everyone of the rides I have been on so far, no KNOBS, and everyone has been looking out for everyone else..

So I guess attitude is important if you are a riding with a grp, as it is more responsibility, cause youre actions don't just impact on yourself. I think attitude is a skill, and it should be encouraged as much as possible...:)

I was offered the advice of "Ride your own Ride" on the very first TCWNR I went on, and it is something that I stick with all the time. I don't try to keep up with the guy in front, I go to my own pace, and that keeps me safe, as well as keeping the person behind me safe, cause I am not in front of them riding outside my capabilities, putting them in jeopordy if I have an off..

Just another point of view I guess....:)

And in the 150,000+ km I've motorcycled over the past five years, only a very few thousand have not been completed in the company of the Most Excellent and Splendidly Spiffing Mrs H. Her Bandit, by the way, has completed 24,000km since April...

i prefer to ride solo for the most part. it does get lonely, talking only to shop keepers and accomodation owners. however, i do find it good to regroup, and let my brain unwind somewhat. plus i do like to stop for photos, and sometimes ill stop every k or so for an entire day. at times, i will pull over at all the rest stops for pics.

group rides of a large number i reserve for charity and protest rides. pairs and such are whenever they pop up. two weeks back i went out as half a pair, and on the return trip we picked up a 3rd and rode with him for a few k. for large groups, i hang towards the back, usually a bike or two ahead of TEC. i dont mind riding with noobs... i think the taupo and wellington CC rides, i "babysat" one each time. good fun.

I like both. Depends on the mood, where I'm going and why. I'm more of a long distance rider and sometimes I don't want company. I rode across North America on my own last year for a month or so, because I didn't want to have to think about anybody else, or what they wanted, or compromise what I went there to see and do. It was my trip, for myself. Other times I find its absolutely great to have people to ride with, and groups are ok. There's something really cool about a huge group, like a toy run, for instance, and that whole tunnel noise thing is definitely a huge buzz. Riding to a rally is always better with friends, for me personally, and that's the reason I flagged Sturgis last year. I was three days' ride away for the final weekend of it, and I just didn't want to ride all the way thru windblown Kansas and Nebraska, to turn up at an event like that on my own.

Bloody Mad Woman (BMW)

Always ridden on my own. Long trips. Camp on my own. Cos I got no friends - just joking. I go at my own pace - stop whenever I want. I don't think I have ever been lonely either. I meet people during the journey - it has made me less shy of talking to strangers.

I rode with a partner on a few occasions and yes that was great. He was a better rider than me and I learnt alot following him. I try never to ride past by ability. Yes I will push myself and learn better riding ways (geez I've scared the hell out of myself at times - in hindsight! lol).

Been on the charity rides - and one or two kb ones. Maybe I should do more group riding - oh well after the knee op.

2 up with my partner and/or small groups for me. A noob or two is fine when there's 3-4 experienced riders to keep an eye on them.
Noob's do benefit from quality instruction given by experienced riders and following a good rider at a solid, smooth pace is wonderful for progress...
Noobs & slow pokes on bigger bikes that wanna learn to ride real fast should go to track days for instruction not group rides where they may try to chase down 600cc, 750cc & Litre+ bikes riden by some most excellent riders.

Personally alone or I prefer riding with no more than 3 good mates and keep a good fucking distance between them. I like ride my own ride and group groups/noob rides can be pretty tragic at times.

I don't mind riding in a group going on a noob ride but I try to keep a fair distance between the next rider and me, just because if the idiot in front me crash or does something stupid, I'll have time to react.

I don't have go into too much details about group rides, but you probably all know that alot of people crash because they ride outta their zone and plus, keeping too close and fixating on the rider infront of you.
