Avast antivirus. Google that. I came home and my Dad had put it on my PC. Self updating and that kinda jazz. Not sure how good it is, but the price was right, nothin.

one solution on Viruses is to run a system where that is not generally targeted by viruses....Run Linux and you will never go back to windoze!

Err, rubbish. Run Linux and you'll run into a FFS paradox at some point and install XP64. Microfloppy's finest O/S to date. At least you won't have to stuff about ceaselessly with NDIS wrappers if you're stupid enough to expect wireless networking to work in Ubuntu as advertised.
There are three ways to experience a virus.
1. Install software a trusted mate gives you on an unmarked cd/dvd
2. Visit Porn sites
3. Open unsolicited email
Macs get viruses. Different linux kernels have viruses specifically targeting things like firewalls and reverse proxy servers. The "viruses are only for Microsoft OSes" is just rubbish. Watch a Mac user implode when they do get a virus. They'll just scream, "Pah" and keep right on forwarding that virus until their box fails and then go, "But Macs don't get viruses" to the less than happy IT crowd who have to put up with his jeering anti-PC tirades all day and are now expected to resurrect work he hasn't backed up for several years.

There are viruses writen for Linux (and they are a lot harder to detect and clean from a unix or linux system....so don't be fooled by that... if there wasn't there wouldn't be AV's for Linux???) and for those Mac users out there, there are viruses for MacOS as well ,
However good free ones for Windows is AVast, AVG, AntiVir Personal Edition, ClamWin Antivirus

I used to use AVG but couldn't find the free version of it last time I looked, so I have gone with Avast. The only problem I've had so far is that last week when it updated (it updates every day) it locked me out of the net! I rang my ISP's helpdesk and they checked and found I could connect to the net okay but nothing would download. They told me to uninstall it and then download it again, which I did, and have had no problems since then. It seems to work pretty well, I don't get a pile of spam.

Combine Avast with Spybot 1.5 and Comodo Firewall and you'll have a system with pretty decent protection for the princely sum of sweet fanny adams
TOP TIP
--------
Spend some peso's on an external hard drive or if you must, a DVD burner (or another PC that's on your network).
Download http://www.runtime.org/dixmlsetup.exe
Run it, back up your C drive (and any other partitions).
Relax, be smug and be glad you hadn't pissed away your money on Norton Ghost or Acronis like this Scotsman before finding a free alternative that works much better.
Oh, and if the wee Avast email icon keeps doing weird spinny things it's a good indication you've got a wee program on your PC that's telling people you're Dr Umbookoo from Nigeria and have 10 Million spare USD to shove in a super secret Kiwi bank account..
Now pay some money into Boomer's paypal account as he's meinubergeekfuhrer

im using avg and windows defender
win defender is from the microsoft site
avg from grissoft
and theres a program like windows defender but its from avg ,its free as well im just downloading it now
sorry i thought it was spybot search and destroy that left shit in the pc but i think its a different program
You shouldnt be finding anything with the antivirus or defender programs
this is because if they find something then the programs let it in ,which means there not doing there job ,which is to stop things before they get there

You wont find many if any viruses for apple
bacause no one targets apple "much"
they write the viruses prodomently for microsoft
thats why some dont get and wont get them
there mainly to corrupt microsoft system

If anything is added to your pc from a spy wear program its called adwear
its a small program that collects info from your pc and passes it on
or ads more to your pc
maybe bank details or pin numbers or passwords
Ever wonder if something pops up in the email ,you wonder how did i get that
very likely its been from adwear

IT is my thing!
The free ones aren't up to much. If you PM me I will send you a free link to a proper one. The updates are quite big though.
If you actually have a problem Trend House Call is an on line scan that will get rid of most pests and viruses. There aint much better around. You may have to google it however if you try (from memory) http://housecall65.trendmicro.com , it should sort you out. Will take a couple of hours though.

Loads of MAC viruses around.
You've been lucky.
Safari is geting hit quite regularly.
The best viruses don't let you know they are there. They just extract the data they want without saying thank you.
You probably have had MAC viruses for years!

I know this, I was just questioning what spybot added, as it's supposed to find and destroy adware....

I think I would know it by now .... and that includes 4 years of working as Apple Mac desktop support...
I'm not saying none exist but I've never seen any evidence of one ever.

Yes must have been that program i was thinking of then
always seemed funny to me that it always found stuff
so i came to the conclusion that its partly stuff it put there in the first place
must have been as it always finds stuff and sometimes the same stuff even if you run it twice in a row

Thats good if that works
But for the sake of a bit of downloading why not get a free antivirus
then you dont need to know how to remove things cause you dont get things

2 of my customers this year. And this is a small town.
OS X, intuitive and easy to use my arse. Never crashes, my arse. That's not to say there's a LOT of aspects about them I quite like. It's just the Mac brigade would have you believe they're much better than they are.

There's a LOT of very nasty programs with names that are similar to Spybot. Spybot 1.5 does a decent job, as does Lavasoft Adaware. AVG & Avast, you're splitting hairs between the two. I prefer Avast as it's more idiot proof and it doesn't schedule the pain in the arse daily scans.
The Microsoft anti spyware, Win defender live care etc are a complete waste of time.
I woudn't say McAfee or Symantec are any better than the free ones. Bitdefender seems to crash a lot and runs slowly. From my limited experience, Kapersky & Nod32 seem the best at detecting but aint free..
At the end of the day, none of them will protect 100%. None of them will help if your hardware farks up or you do something stupid yourself like logging in as an administrator and deleting important system files. Therefore most home users are as well with a combination of free stuff that will sort out 99% of threats.
The best defence is backing up, not visiting dodgy websites and taking a semi regular system image (Vista business or above or using the XML image software I mentioned earlier). Why pay money when you don't have to?

I run the NOD32 - 30 day trial, and every 30 days just uninstall it and go again, Brilliant! but if you are so inclined there is a trial crack that lets it run till 2050.

if you ever get a pop up from IE you never follow it and download
have update anti virus (avg, avast) both are free,
and spyware (spybot, adware) both free,
and make sure both are update and run run them across system for first start.

Ive used avg for a while now all good, if ya have b/band ya can set ya auto updates and daily scan for 3 am or the like !
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/downloads-products/us/frt/0?prd=aff
Run it in conjunction with avg's free spyware, which i run daily (ok so i visit a few dodgy sites)
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/download-free-anti-spyware/
Stops ya pc from slowing down if you only have the basic pc
Also run adaware and quite often find that one might miss the odd spy but the other picks it up, if i run them one after each other !
http://www.lavasoft.com/single/trialpay.php
Deleteing ya cookies and history often helps too
