View Full Version : School holidays, I'm bored pt 1: "How did you pick your KB name?"

PrincessBandit
21st January 2008, 13:02
I'm sure this has been up before, but tried a search and didn't find anything so here goes......

after seeing Mark's "what do you look like" thread I was interested in how people came up with their aka on kb. Some I guess are obvious e.g. my brother is a katana aficionado hence his choice of moniker. Me, well I too wanted something related to my bike but most of the bandit ideas were already taken so I went with Princess- because (i) i can behave like one at times and (ii) it is more fitting than other choices such as Bum-.......
How about you?

Coyote
21st January 2008, 13:15
Coyote's are cool :D

As for my previous alias, 'alarumba', that was a name I used on the internets since noone else used it and I didn't need to remember a name with a series of numbers at the end, like 'well_hung2836'. I used it not knowing how small KB was at the time (friend told me to sign up, I did, then looked around) and would've used something cooler like Coyote, Reaper or Phoenix if I had known.

Trouss
21st January 2008, 13:21
Trouss has been my nickame since I was a little apprentice drinker. . . One of mates picked it as I didn't have a nickname at the time, everyone else did. . . Gambling, Fatty, Big Lou, Damla, the list goes on.

It just stuck, and has been with me ever since. There are people around that only know me as Trouss.

koba
21st January 2008, 14:16
koba was a georgian folk hero (the country, not the US state) who was a wee bit like robin hood, stole from the rich and gave to the poor.
Joseph Dzugashvilli took it as his communist psuedonym early on in the fight against the russian government/monarchy. Later in his career he added "Stalin", meaning "man of steel". He eventually dropped the koba altogether.
In this transition I finad an amazing metaphor on human nature and development, Idealistic working for good at the beginning, working hard to rise to the top of a ladder and ending life a bitter, untrustworthy and corrupt old man.

I would like to belive by keeping examples of such possible life paths close at hand I may be able to avoid becoming the almost inevitable stereotype of a "grumpy old man"!

However I believe I know a disproportionate ammount of older ladise and gent who aren't grumpy.

Oh, and "koba" is easy to type and remember.

My husband (then partner) gave me a personalised plate with 007XX on it for my birthday a couple of years ago.

His last name being Bond, and XX being the chromosome sequence for a girl, he declared me his girl on that day

A lot of people think it is something quite raunchy, but it is just very romantic.

Morcs
21st January 2008, 17:09
The name Morcs started around 7 years ago.

I was 14 and had joined a new school near liverpool in England, id just moved from the lake district.
In the last lesson of the first day a guy was asking where I was from, I told him, and he said is that near Morecambe? - northerners being simple people that was good enough for him - so my name was Morecambe.

Over the years it got shortened to Morcs and has been my alias on many many forums (google it and you should come up with about 10 entries in the first 2 pages that actually are me), but the number of impersonators has increased in the last few years.

Beemer
22nd January 2008, 11:08

Cajun
22nd January 2008, 11:55
My nick name comes from a member of the x-men comic book series. I use to collect comics/cards of Gambit when i was younger.

Gambit is what he is normally known as, he was also called 'The Ragin Cajun', so i used that instead,

I started using that nick name when i started on BBS 18+ years ago, it got shortedn down to Cajun along the way, since somce places where only allowed 6-8 letter names. So this nick name has been with me for a very long time, i have a few 'alternive' nicks i use on a few other sites, one of my other favourite ones i like to use is farQ, used that in more hacking/cracking/warez scene for about 15 years.

What an old fulla auw!

:D

I do sometimes miss the late-night burble of a 14.4kbps modem finally getting past the busy signals and connecting to a local BBS.

Ah, the excitement of all those slowly-downloaded JPEGs of naked women, multiplayer Doom via modem, and the Anarchist's Cookbook textfiles.

And mum and dad picking up the phone in the kitchen and yelling at me because they got a data signal in their ear at precisely the same time I started yelling at them for killing my connection and condemning me to another half hour of auto-redial.

Good old days (yes, I was 'jrandom' then, too).

When I first joined this forum I was a new pillion so I spent my time klinging on for dear life! Then as a newbie rider it was a very good description of my riding style.

Of course klingons are those wrinkly-browed beings from Star Trek so I also think of myself as a female one of them. Hence the wrinkly-browed doggie in my avatar (and if you want to see me wearing nothing but bunny ears, take a look at my profile pic :blip:)

people were saying it to me so often it just stuck.. Not because I did anything really stupid, but because I did lots of things that were regarded by some as extreme - flying, paragliding, diving, bomb making, and pretty much anything unique I could find. "you're daaaangerous barsted maaaaaan". I originally used it online as a gaming nick, where it was quite hilarious.

One thing people find about me, is they can't tell if I am joking or not because of the off-the-wall shit I joke about (is he serious or what?) so the DB handle has them wondering right from the beginning. Haha, I like it - keep wondering !

He had this little brazier and he threw on some dried leafy material there was some smoke he muttered some incantation of some sort. I got this little certificate (bloodywell lost it) with my Indian name on it. This translated to Skyryder. Twenty bucks for the obvious like I spoke with an American 'twang.'

(It's just a danish variation of Michael, just like Mike and Mickey.)

Good old days (yes, I was 'jrandom' then, too).

yeah bbs back in the day was awsome, i started on a 1200 baud modem, i over clocked to 2400 baud, on my good ol 386

took like 20+ mins to download that picture of Teri Hatcher in superman cape, that was the hit at the time

and playing the muds, and trying to hack the bbs to get myself few net

Thanks for sending me on a trip down memory lane... :niceone:

I remember the 2400 baud modems as well. I frequented a few fora back in those days and remember the long wait for downloads. Images were killers and videos were nonexistent. Online gaming in the form of MUDs was a lot of fun - and I spent a huge amount of hours doing so. This was on Valhalla in Denmark (the original DIKU MUD for those who know what that is) - on a direct dial-up connection (think the danish equivalent of Amberley to Auckland). I think it supported all of 16 players due to a limited number of incoming lines. My parents weren't too pleased with me spending so much time gaming online and I usually waited until they'd gone to bed and then played through until 3:30 am... The first half of 1st year of Highschool passed in a zombie-like haze! I remember when the phone bill arrived - ~$1100 - fortunately I had the money, but there was a lot of explaining to do, the parents were impressed... in the bad way!
Then came the internet and with a huge selection of MUDs and the opportunity for local dial-up...

Macfly was a name used for me in a past life, as it's close to my surname, however I quite like the notion of time travel, so I started using Marty. It's just stuck, and people use it as much as my my real name.

I have a number plate (on the cage) that reads FFS
Which in internet speak means "For Fucks Sake"
I tried to set my aka as FFS but it would not be accepted, (cant remember why)
Actually I should get the plate transferred to my bike....hmmmm

I'm afraid MUDs, DIKU and baud all belong well and truly in the nerd category I'm afraid. MUD = Multi-User-Dungeon (old text based online roleplaying games), DIKU (Datalogisk Institut Koebenhavns Universitet = Datalogical Institute University of Copenhagen) and baud is just an old measure of the speed of a dial-up modem ("modern" modems are 56500 baud I believe).

Blame Cajun and jrandom for sending me down memory lane though - I try to behave these days. Especially since the meds have run out :(

Storm because I got the name early in my army career due to the way I "stormed" around when I was in a hurry, and its stuck ever since.

That, and the other nickname I get: "satan" -a play on my last name- is usually a bit confronational to use!!
