Suzuki RMZ 250 -(2004). Help please

I am considering buying one of the above. Can anyone who has owned one or know about that model advise me about the bike or if it was an O.K machine.

These are great machines..and are identical to kxf250 of the same vintage..excellent engine...the new 07 model is even better...you definatly notice the chassis is alot nicer handling...more precise.

I have a 07 RMZ250 for sale if your interested...mint bike...has had stock suspension re-valved...and original tyres on it [shows ya how many hours its done...lol]

i believe that the 04 was prone to over heating (more so than others) but i was told that if you up grade the water pump to one of the aftermarket boysen ones it solves it. along with one of the catch bottles. i'm sure there are people here that can elaborate on this.

If your worried about over heating your 4 stroke 250, then you can add an overflow bottle. Easy to install and rather cheap, to protect what could be a very bad and costly day.

These bikes would only over heat if you were stuck in the mud and reving the tits off them or had the bike idling for a long time...
Like any other bike for that matter

They do tend to lose a little bit of coolant fluied over a few rides.
My bike has done 14 hours and needs a top up of maybe 50ml.
Just something to keep an eye on.

Other then that the rmzs are good bikes just have to check the the hours that the bike has done, if the bike has done over 50 hours you might think about doing a rebuild if you buy the bike. And wheigh up the costs.
The newer the bike you can get will always be better.

out of interest, how much are you looking at spending. i know a few people that are looking to upgrade very soon and all ride late model 250f's.

I owned an 04 KXF250 (identicle bike) racing MX up to National level. you need to watch the following.

You need to drain the radiator to do an oil filter change, an aftermarket cover will fix this

The exhaust valves will stretch and require replacement (between 35 and 70 hrs depending on riding)

They where prone to overheating only if revved continuasly while standing still (like a 125 rider on the start line) or used for serious offroad (enduro) stuff. I NEVER overheated mine during normal offroad and MX racing

you can fix this using the later model right hand side radiator (its about 30mm longer), but you shouldnt really need to

Plan to change the rings every 15-30 hours and piston every 25-50 hours, again depending on use.

Change the oil every 3-5 hours with the good stuff and you should be good to go

I put over 100 hours on mine and never had a mechanical DNF

mate had one, cracked the piston on trail ride cost him about $700 - $800 form a shop. They didn't rip him either the parts were very pricey.

Dont take my post the wrong way either, it was a great bike, you just have to treat them right, like any modern 4 stroke

Yeah Rmz are nutorious for valve recesion and over heating around the exhaust valves (under normal riding conditions).The safest bets are A 05-on CRF250R or any year YZ250F (newer the better ,and if its an 06 ask if they the bike has had the new valves fitted,as there was a recall on some 06 valves) KXF's suffered from simmilar problems.
