Great day for a ride so went up the top of the Rimutakas with the wife on the back.
All sweet until on the way back down when I totally stuffed up going into the gravel road works :( (I am sure you know where I mean if you were up there today)

Problems:
1. Coming up on the other side of the road there was not that much gravel
2. I thought it would not be that bad (based on the above)
3. I did not line up with the car tyre tracks properly
4. I must have been going a little to quick on entry (but only about 20km/h)

Result:
1. Rode straight into a deep section of gravel
2. Lost steering control
3. Fell over on the left side
4. Bike landed on my leg, pinning my foot.

We were going very slowly by the time the bike went over, so the wife just rolled away.
I was able to kick the bike off my leg (no major damage) and we picked her up and rolled her off to the side of the road. No thanks to the que of cars that stopped behing us, with no offers of assistance or 'are you ok?' questions

Got home and have chilled out with some beers :apint: :calm:
The bike damage does not seem to bad, minor scratch on mirror, some fairing scratches. But the side of the engine case that sticks out of the fairing is pretty badly scratched up :disapint:

Moral of this story, respect gravel

glad to hear not too major - especially since you were 2 up.

Nothing like gravel to take the shine off farings and metal casings...

Bad luck man. I've been in similar incidents, ego hurts more than anything.

Shame to hear you came off and especially with the Missus on the back. Hopes she is the understanding type. That stretch of road works was a mess today and the heat, waiting for the lollipop man to let us go. Lots of Mr Plods out as well people. That black mufti Commordore is still lurking between Feathers and M'tbh.

There was also some melted tar on the road near the top of the hill which was a bit worrying. Did a few strange maneouvers to get over that stuff. That's pretty stink though Kendog. Hey - are you the one who was up there a few weeks ago with the front of your fairing off?
Good to see you out there Mark. And Lynda and Hamish and HerB4 and Zapf.

That sucks, I feel for you. Glad no injuries though.
Btw, are you the guy on the 600 I (Red R1) rode down to featherston servo, and back up to the hill top with once?

Will the missus ride with you again?

Dave.

Not me again, and I think she will ride with me again, however she did mention something about getting off and walking next to the bike when we come across gravel next time :)

Glad you both are ok. Remember to make sure you check to see if your battery level is ok if you have a non sealed type fitted.

Sorry to hear about that Kendog. Hope you, your bike, and your wife (not necessarily in that order of course!) are okay.

We went over the roadworks Fri night, Sat and Sun, and it seemed different each time! Sat and Sun they seemed to have put more gravel down inbetween our trips over it. Yes, it was definitely thicker on our coming home journeys, and with the traffic right up your ass it's a pain. Also I slowed up just before it so there was some clear space between me and the car in front so I could see what was coming up - didn't make the gravel any less thick but at least I could see what I was going to be riding over.

Ouch man, that doesnt sound good. Yea, never trust gravel, its a pain in the wherever the bike lands on you. I still have some gravel in my arm from an accident a few years back.

Glad to hear all is well though.

Sorry to hear about the biff, glad it was minor. I guess the best thing to do is go practise some gravel roads so you get your confidence up as you will be apprehensive in gravel & that is worse than being loose in it.

Velox Yeah that melty tar was pretty scary, I didn’t dare lean into it. You must know that road backwards by now I see you every time I’m up there. Twice on sat.

PS her B4 I assume that was you on the 748, I was stopped at the roadworks on the orange bike. Why on earth do they block the road off in the weekends, staggers belief.

When I was stopped at the top there was a chap turned up on a VFR with no gloves on. He was worried about sweat & being too hot. “Just have to make sure I don’t have an accident eh?”

I mean I’m sure Kendog wasn’t thinking “well heck I might go chuck the bike down the road today”.

I'm not actually up there that much, maybe twice a month. We must just be able to tell when is a good time to 'hit the hill'! - Great minds and all that eh.

Yeah - I saw that guy (or someone without gloves) and was a little disturbed as well. It gives me nasty mental images. :pinch:

Correct, that is not what I was thinking.
My left glove took a bit of a hammering as I went down even in this little accident, so I hate to imagine what that would have been like with no gloves .

I went over on Sunday - taking a friend who's never ridden before for a day trip to Mount Bruce - and saw a few squids, most notably the guy and his mate on a big, green Kwaka, both in their shorts, sneakers, and t-shirts.
