Reading the article in the ODT about the shooting in Waihi:
The 'eye-witness' said he 'believed the man was about to give himself up' (after getting out of a van and pointing a rifle at police, the same rifle he had been firing at police during a pursuit).
Mr Nilsson turned his back 'for a split second' when he heard a single shot.
How do the media find these people???

Personally, I want to know why the cop in question didn't wait until he'd raised the rifle to his eye, and then headshot him through the telescopic sight.
Don't police officers get any training these days?

Fine, then the cop should have used the "single shot with a pistol taken while running untouched through a hail of bullets, resulting in bad guy toppling, unmarked but apparently dead, from an overhead walkway" technique.
Although I'm not too sure how well it works when the bad guy isn't on an overhead walkway.

Because he was in a van which was probably swerving all over the road at high speed, and, once again, the cops obviously hadn't seen the "several hundred rounds fired from an automatic weapon out the window, all of which vanish into thin air without either making ineffectual holes in the panels of the bad guy's car or splattering bystanders within a 400m radius" training film.
I'm starting to suspect that the NZ Police weapons training programme might be in need of a major overhaul.

I have no sympathy for anyone who fires a weapon at a police officer, shoot to kill, no questions asked.
If they fire a weapon at a normal member of society, same rule applies.
If they are shooting at gang members or other various scumbags, with no risk to innocent folks, give them more ammunition and come back in 20 mins.

I have no problem with the Polis shooting him. I do find it kinda fukt that they had to chase him all the way from Ngongotaha to Waihi (60km?) before being able to stop him. They (allegedly) had up to 17 cars chasing him, including "at high speed through the main street of Katikati" - weren't they able to radio ahead and throw some road spikes in his path or summat? :spudwhat:

That's what I couldn't figure out either. Obviously more fun playing "highway patrol" and having fun with their pistolas. Radio ahead, couple of spike strips, then a big warning sign and then a few concrete breeze blocks in the road. End of chase.
Actually, I take it back...once a lowlife fires just one shot towards other people (especially coppers) then they should be taken out with extreme prejudice. Radio ahead, have them taken out in a hail of gunfire or a well placed sniper shot. Get some taxpayers money back by selling the footage.

Cue Tui ad for that - how can you believe someone was about to give up? Sorry, but if you wander around with a rifle, you should expect to be shot.
The media probably found this eye witless in the same place they found that person who wasn't even related to that criminal from Australia - but they did share a relatively common surname!

That'd have to be some pretty awesome training to pull that shot off. Mythbusters showed that one to be PLAUSIBLE actually - pretty tricky though given all the glass lenses in the sight deflecting the bullet. NOT an impossible shot 'just a kind of 1 in a thousand even for an excellent marksman'.

OK (flicking between the two)
TV1. Lead item was "the funeral" and this went on for about 8mins or so. Small item later on with "few details".
TV3. Lead item with reporter on the scene. Footage of scene, helicopter taking off to ferry "the accused" to Waikato. Should have gone by road imho... then "more details as it comes to hand.
Later in the news an update with a few details of the "lead collector" as reported from the hospital, age/injury etc.
Difference: On the scene, with details and no speculation.
TVNZ probably had all of their reporters in Parnell?
Dont you think that it would be better to try to clense people before they go doing these sorts of things?

It's a no brainer people,point/fire a firearm and risk fatal consequences.
The cops first on the scene don't know the mindset of the accused,re suicidal/martyr syndrome. And if stoned/pissed(not suggesting he was) what good is asking the guy to put down his weapon,he fired at them, put yourself in the cops position, what would you do?
Cops allways cop it(no pun)from media and we allways hear the accused details first, the cops never get to present their case at the same time,so a distorted view is formed,of course there will be the ones who say the guy was a typical guy, didn't deserve to be shot, etc.Ffs he shot at people.

NZers do not talk to the media. Something about the national psyche I guess. They particularly double-plus-don't talk when a recording device is involved. The very few who are willing to be quoted on the record are, therefore, usually complete fucking weirdos.
Oh, and in that kind of situation all the actually useful witnesses have been spoken to by the cops (being witnesses, after all) and as part of that process are generally asked if they wouldn't mind ever so much not talking to the media.
The media, in a nutshell, get the dregs.
