A Barclaycard executive has been forced to quit after making an insulting remark about Muslims.
Marc Howells, one of the company's leading figures, left his £200,000-a-year job following the tasteless quip during a staff meeting as he discussed quarterly figures.

Colleagues were stunned when he said: "The results were like Muslims - some were good, some were Shi'ite."

Offended members of staff complained to senior bosses about the "wholly inappropriate" comment.

Mr Howells, 42, who worked for Barclaycard's European arm and has a £2million home in St John's Wood, was forced out earlier this month after negotiating an undisclosed pay-off, classed as "redundancy under compromise".

A company source said: "No one could quite believe their ears when he came out with his Shi'ite joke.

"He had a very responsible job in a multinational company. What on earth was he thinking of?

"There were a few embarrassed guffaws but everyone except him knew he was for the high jump the moment he said it."

Talk about landing yourself in the Shi'ite.

PC has gone way over the top. Harrassment policies are worded so you have to always 'err on the side of caution'. The wording of these policies is so vague so as to allow room for any kind of 'offense' to be considered under it's jurisdiction. You don't even have to be the one whose offended by what someone has said to you, someone you later told could get all offended on your behalf and have the person fired for it!!! TRUE cos I was involved in several investigations that went that way! AND it even extended to whatever 'might be deemed inappropriate' - so screen savers of tasty boys (or girls) even fully clothed ones could be construed as 'sexual exploitation' couldn't even have the topless all blacks photo up on the wall by my desk!

...bloody drove me nuts as the blunt and terribly honest girl that I am I have had my fair share of 'foot in mouth' moments and had many slaps on the hands for it too!

But that's the thing - they seem to have no sense of humour. Almost every group gets targeted by comedians etc., yet the Muslims seem to be terrifically intolerant of even things not intended as slurs.
