Levels Nationals Rd2
We were meant to be down there on the Friday for the unofficial practice, however first Divvo couldn’t get the day off and then my boy at work fell down a 6 metre bank and fucked himself up, so instead it was a early start on Saturday morning to get down there
All loaded up and ready to go and the mighty turbocharged, intercooled, slash cut equipped Ford Transit Vangina made the trip fly by
Unloaded signed in, scrutineered (failed) and back to our pit, where Divvo makes himself some bar end plugs out of a bit of tree he finds lying around:laugh:
After Denny fibre glassed the broken fairing during the week for us we find some bits don’t quite line up anymore and we have to apply a bit of force to make things fit but we get it all fitted up and roll out for our first qualifying
Q1 Saturday
It apparent fairly early on that the new outfit handles the left hand corners that Levels is primarily made up of far better than the old on, gassing it up and sliding it and changing gears and generally having a ball, the outfit is fairly twitchy into the decreasing radius so Divvo decides to check some stuff out
In between sessions we check and change the toe in and camber on the chair wheel after the tyre temps indicated it was a long way out and he winds in a bit more castor on the front
Q2 Saturday
With the changes the outfits feeling much better and we knock another 3 seconds off our first qualifying times, Darren has a bit of a moment when he ½ goes off the back of the 666 outfit and to give his arm a bit of a hammering when he gets his arm jammed in between the wheel and bodywork:doctor:, we put back in and put it up on the stands and give it a look over
Race 1 Saturday
We’re 8th on the grid, row 4 on the inside and we get a good launch, unfortunately Leighton in front of us doesn’t and we get blocked in on the run to turn 1, we chase down Dags/James and make the past and have them all over the back of us for the next few laps, I miss my footing once through the chicane which causes a big slide and then Dags/James get back past us off the end of the straight, Jim Coyles carbon fibre muffler catches fire but he has to put his knee’s out before he can extinguish the muffler, we come in 8th and knock another 2 seconds off our qualifying times to get down to 1:18.962 with the fast guys in the 1.13 bracket
We get a visitor from the UK in the shape of Sean Hegarty who tells Steve Bron he’s not riding hard enough , the outfit is up on the stands and we check it over and gas it up, we reckon a change of gearing would work a bit better as we’re a bit tall geared but due to a addition by the previous owner it’s a bit of a prick to change so we leave it as it is:pinch:
We pack it up for the night and head off to Glens where we have accommodation, a bbq and drinks later and it’s obvious it’s going to get noisy here so we decided to sleep at the track, I end up on an airbed in the trailer and Divvo somehow fits himself across the front seats of the van
Up early and off to the clubrooms for a shower then after Divvo wakes up as Denny is trying to duct tape the van doors shut me and Divvo head off for breakfast as a local group is doing a very tasty mixed grill for brekkie:drool:
Riders briefing comes and goes and then it’s into the scrub sessions, a few of the outfits go out but we decide to conserve our energy and don’t bother, Joni turns up and immediately starts pushing water bottles into our hands to keep us hydrated :apint:as the temperature looks like it’ll be getting up a bit
Race 2 Sunday
Our turn rolls around and we head up to the dummy grid and out onto the track,Divvo positions the outfit slightly to the right on our grid and as the lights go out we get a good launch and take down two outfits before we hit turn 1, we’ve got 4-5 bike lengths on Leighton when we hit the straight but by the time we’re ½ way down it he’s pulling out to pass, we’ve got Dags/James all over the back of us and when we run into the decreasing radius a bit wide he goes up the inside, a couple of laps latter Brian/Darren do the same and we set off after them, a couple of laps latter and we’re on there tail through the chicane and pass them into Turn1, they get back past us turning into the sweeper onto the back straight and we pass them at the exit, Graeme cocks up turn one and bounces over the ripple strips, off the track, spins twice and dumps Paul off the side (that’s a slab of beer you owe Paul) we keep in front of Brian/Darren and finish 7th with our best lap within ½ second of last years
Paul gets a massage on his neck which he’s hurt when he came off and is squealing like a girl, we’ve got the outfit back on the stands and give it a check over and then start dicking about, Joni has got the drink bottles out shoving them in our hands and we’re drinking heaps of water and before you know it we’re up again
Race 3 Sunday
Gav gives us a push on the dummy grid as we have a flat battery problem:angry2: and we line up in the usual spot, another good start and we’re alongside Leighton, the Lawrence’s are on the outside and moving over into us, for a moment it looks like the whole three wide thing isn’t going to work and then we’re past Leighton and turning in, we hit the straight with a gap back to Leighton, it takes him 2 laps before he gets by and the Dags/James are trying the same and make it past us as well, Brian/Darren take another 4 laps before they can pull a pass, we chase them but can’t get them back and finish 9th
We’ve had a fairly good run and got a bit more used to the outfit, I reckon I’m still overworking a lot of the corners but it’s so much easier to move around on than the old one and out lap times don’t drop off as much in the later part of the race as we’re not getting as tired as on the old one, it handles the lefts much better as you can gas it up earlier and harder and it feels like I have much more time to move around
Racing over we’re packed up and ready to go, lucky Joni has driven down as I end up getting her to drive me home as after the weekends over and the adrenaline level goes down I’m a bit more tired than I thought, I’m pretty fortunate I have her support for my chosen sport
So now we have a bit of bodywork to fix up and give the outfit a bit of a check over and then in about a month we’re off to Manfield for Rd 3 (for the sidecars):woohoo:
And a very well done to the Scrivy/Sidecarbob double act for taking another 3 out of 3 wins:niceone:

It felt weird being at home on Saturday while Kick was racing, so I was happy to be at the track on Sunday…. :woohoo:
Was a great day over all, I think Kick and Divvo are coming to terms with the new chair very well. They are getting better and better with each race.
Divvo showed his blinding starts again on Sunday, which was great to see!
Huge congrats to Scrivy and Sidecar bob for another 3 out of 3! Yay! :first:

Scrivy & Bob's Race Report.
We couldnt be arsed with Friday practice, Hell, the track still goes the same way from what we heard.
Saturday, we rolled up late, dropped the sidecar out of the trailer, kicked the tyres & threw on some 18 year old leathers & went out & broke the lap record in 5 laps of qualifying.
Sat on our arses smoking & laughing about the LCR faggots messing around with their slow tedious money pits across the driveway from us, & skipped second qual.
Went out in the first race & KICKED EVERYONE ELSES LAME ASSES!!! Came back in & had another ciggie & more giggles about the LCR's, loaded up & buggered off.
Sunday, Late again, Went out & KICKED EVERYONE ELSES LAME ASSES again in two races, & re broke the lap record 3 more times.
Took a south island shearer for a go on the side afterwards & he had a bloody ball!!
Went to prizegiving, had a few jars, took the piss some more & buggered off back to Christchurch to catch the ferry the next day.

Seeing as the three previous lap records were set by LCR's, one of them with Steve Webster on it, i kind of doubt it.
Just as a fish does not respect how much you paid for the fishing rod, But is caught by the skill & cunning of the fisherman, the track does not respect how much you paid for the sidecar.

Funny how people make a deal about CC ratings for an unfair advantage..... but the rule book also mentions heaps of other allowances also. Such as lengths, widths, offsets etc......
Should we have a minimum weight rule imposed??? How about bringing all the professionally built european LCR's up to our sidecar weight of 285 kgs? :2thumbsup
I would happily go to a 1000cc engine then dude!!

This thread is excellent. It provides first hand information from the actual racers about the effort and sacrifices needed to compete at national level.
The sleepless nights before a big event, pressure of qualifying, the mind games that go on between teams...
Power vs Handling (theres no replacement for displacement)
Good luck with your racing this weekend.

um, er, well, ummmm.... yeah, like Garry H said I guess........
You're right though Garry. There are alot of mind games going on at National level.
Sidecar Bob and I joke about our racing alot, but in all honesty, we like to win too if we can. Although, we dont spend what the other teams do to achieve the wins!
We are passionate about our sport, and the passion shows on the track by way of us acknowlegding the crowds with our antics, and also gaining race wins. We certainly do not go out to do the championships to win it, but as Sidecar Bob has stated numerous times before, it's more of a stress relief from our work.
The bonus for us (and also the most rewarding for us) is that we are extremely competitive on a very old, tired, antiquated and overweight machine in comparison to the new LCR and Windle machines now here in NZ.
However, we do not make statements as have been made by others that we will annihilate and smash certain individuals. We just want good, clean racing.
It is humbling though, that other teams have spent bucket loads just to knock us off our perch!
We do put a cap on our seasons racing - a meager $5000!! That's $2500 each!! I would love to know who gets more value for money racing than me and sidecar bob!!! We raced the two South Island meets on 1 rear tyre, as opposed to our main competitor that used 4!! That saved us $1545!! Although, it was on the canvas threads at the end, we still set a lap record on it!!
In all honesty, I know the ex-world champs LCR will smack my ass at Manfield and Puke, and so it should - it should be at least 6 seconds a lap faster than us. Thats what spending $150,000 buys you. But I don't get off on just speed, I love to dice and to outbrake and outcorner, that's what I call racing. If sheer speed was what I wanted, I'd by a drag bike!!
The mind games and BS will continue long after the racing. But I love the saying "The BS stops when the flag drops!".
The most awe I have with the racing is not the adrenaline rush, nor the speed or the dicing, but to see my passenger still on the machine at the end of the race!! How the hell he stays on defies belief!! I can say from my experience, theres not too many people that could do it competently at National level! Most spectators would know that my passenger gets probably the hardest ride out there due to the design of my machine, my style of riding, and also the level of passenger input required on it.
So when you see Sidecar Bob and I bantering and taking the piss out of each other on KB, you now know that I have the utmost respect for his abilities as a passenger. He may be 41, grey haired, and overweight........... but, by fuck is he the man on the side!! That is why we are winning races!!
Scrivy
P.S. Planna - can you make sure Sidecar Bob keeps up his fitness program! We are gunna need it on the North Island tracks!! Please take another 50-60 for the team.........

As best i can tell (as Bron's LCR blasts past us down the back straight at Levels) he has both power & handling. We on the other hand have a level of skill & determinatoin that only 20 years at, or near the top of the sport can get you.
In our case, the sleepless nights are only because of the shagging (or monkey spanking in Scrivy's case) caused by an excess of the horny chemical released when one races.
Mind games??? Nooooo, we would never stoop to that sort of thing.
As for Scrivys comments about me staying on the thing, its a mind thing, not a physical thing, To stay on the side at that pace, you must not (as a passenger) plan further ahead than the next apex, as it passes under you, then you move to the next issue, whatever that may be.
The fast lap times are strictly down to his ability & our trust in each other.

When you get to our pace you will see what i mean, i have no idea how the exit of a corner will pan out as we are entering it, hence, short term planning & focusing entirely on the moment gives more mental fortitude to that moment.

I remember on the first chair at Ruapuna when I was first starting and we went from around the 2 minute mark to 1.55 and the step up it required at the time, then the further step it required to run at 1.50, sometimes I struggle to think about what taking another 5+ seconds off must be like

To give that some perspective, we did 1.14's in Saturday's race & i could have done it all day, On Sunday morning when Steve Bron turned the wick up, We had to respond with early 1.12's, That made the difference between getting off feeling totally refreshesd & feeling totally shagged, Only 2 seconds a lap.

Yeah mate, great news, 287hp at the rear wheel, Should be enough at this stage, otherwise we are going to throw out the 1735 kit & install a 2.3litre methanol kit.

Supercharger?
Not on the 'busa, but heres a serious question kick, are you allowed to turbocharge a classic sidecar.
I have bought Bernie Smith's BMW classic with R100 motor & i have a turbocharged R100rs, would do the swap if i could.

I would doubt it unless you could prove that they ran like that in the period and if the cutoff is Pre76 I would have thought a R100 was from outside that? or was 76 the first year of manufacture? edit : just checked my books and it was

Funny thing I was looking at the Guzzi outfit of Johnny B at Wanganui and thinking I'd love a BMW outfit along those lines, can I please have a go on it Mr
The last of the twinshock R100RS is one of my favourite bikes, although I only ever owned a R75/7
