Anyone interested in a trip over the west coast way. Back end of Feb or early March? Initial thoughts are up to Reefton, waitahu river/montgomerie hut, big river then down to waipuna creek/tunnels and napoleon hill. Then the train of thought leads to an overnight stay at the Ikamatua pub, the accomodation is basic but cheap and they do good meals plus there is beer of course. The following day thinking of down to Kumara area and cockeye creek and no name road as these tracks intersect each other and if there is still time on down to Ross and up mount greenland. If anyone has any thoughts about the route/timeframe feel free to share. Any other tracks that could be done around there?

Would you be trailering over to the coast, or riding all the way? If you're trailering, you what my next question will be:first:. But yeah, count me in, 24th of Feb is a Trailworx ride which I'm hoping to get on, but after that I have no commitments that I can remember.....

Was within a hairs breath of starting a thread with the same ride myself yesterday. I'm keen but depends on finances at the time.

At this early stage i was going to ride over...... Looks like a few are going to do the trail ride on the 24th feb so how does either the weekend of the 8th or 15th march fit in with peoples plans. Have heard in the past from a few 4x4 guys that there are ways out of big river that dont mean taking the same route we came in on. Any ideas? One of these guys claimed that bikes could get from the wooden building at the end over to Waiuta, but all i can find is an MTB track. Any knowledge of such tracks?

Not sure about the track out to Waiuta. From memory there is a locked gate and a pedestrian only gate which you will have trouble getting a bike past. it is a doc track over the Waiuta so would recommended that you don't go over there anyway. Others may know more.
Those dates will probably work for me.

Went in one way, backtracked so far then turn and came out another with the DAS tours up there. That was on the CRF230 and I'd be buggered if I would want to try repeat the last bits on the 650.

I can't make the 8th as working but would be a starter for the 15th march.

I rode the Waipuna/Napoleons and Cockeye Creek/No Name Road tracks at the beginning of the month, and they're all in great condition. Access to Nobles Creek from Ahaura is now through private land/locked gate, but ring Malcolm and Robyn Smith (phone 03 732-3849) for permission.
One way out of Big River that's good fun, and sometimes challenging on a bigger bike, is where the track forks at the green post, about 10 km from the Soldiers Rd turn-off, to take the RH fork (LH to Big River) for 9.9km then turn left down a narrow and rough snotty track that brings you out to the main Reefton to Greymouth road at the Reefton Saddle.

Thanks for the info Dave. Have done big river a few times before but dont recall the green post but would definately be game for that route out. What about making it the 15th march to give people a set date to work with.

By the green post do you mean around Merrijigs somewhere, i.e. near the sign marking the hotel site?
