Yeah! Lol. Back on it guys, after almost a year off. Feels great and it's a awesome bike! Been looking for a ZX6R 636 either 03 or 04 model for a while now. Finally got one in the colour I like as well :) I like the seat height of the 03 04 model as well as the suspension and I think it's one of the best looking modern sports bike. Enough power compared to my 250 and 400 to keep me entertained for a while. The brakes and suspension is awesome, just love it.

Bought it 1.5 weeks ago and have taken it for short rides just clocking a few hundred k's to date. Still getting back to riding and hope to do a few long KB rides sometime soon. But all in all I am happy with the deal and the machine.

Just had a few small n0o0b questions:

I've got pilot powers rear with more than 70% thread I'd say and the front is 2CT, put on brand new just before I bought it. Is that a good combination? How much stickier is the 2CT's compared to Pilot Powers?

After my last accident (got taken out by a red light runner) and breaking a few bones and going through surgery I've decided not to commute with stupid Aucklanders. 10 years ago our society wasn't like this. But anyways I'll leave that discussion to another day. I am mainly going to use it for weekend rides away from traffic and hope to do lots more track days this year since I will be graduating soon.

So is that combination ok or shall I get 2CT on the rear as well? I am running them on 38 34 psi? What do you guys run your 180 and 120 tyres on?

Manual says minimum 95 octane fuel. If I were to use 98 would that be any better than, say 96 or 95? What do you guys use?

The guy I bought it off was much lighter than myself and he got the suspension set up for his weight. Who would be the best person to get the suspension set up from? Again I am not planning on sticking ohlins or anything, just want to make sure it's best set up for me.

10W-40 SE. I've always used castrol. Should I be using semi synthetic or fully synthetic? Any other brands I should try out for some other reason?

I thinking of getting a dark screen for it but don't want double bubble, where shall I get one from? It's not on TradeMe and I am not on e bay, don't know how to use it :( What would it cost?

It did not come with the rear cowl again how much would that cost? Can anyone from here source these for cheaper than what dealers would charge me?

I was thinking of tail tidy too but can't make up my mind as to whether it's a good idea or not? I mean those big indicators still aren't big enough for some blind drivers on the road, although getting rid of the big spade at the back would look nice!

Few other things before I bore you lot, tank pad, crash bungs, air filter, halogen lights ?? I will be sussing out other mechanical stuff soon, clutch, chain, sprockets and valve clearances. It's got 30,000 k's on the clock and clutch is fine. How long do they normally last? Don't think the last owner was pulling wheelies on it. But I am not sure about the clutch.

Enjoy the pics! It's great to be back on two wheels :D :D :D

Thanks mate, true and too true. The k's are a little bit higher than what I was looking for, but could not let this go. You hardly spot blue/red/orange ones in these.

Yup I like blue

Been on TradeMe almost everyday for the last 2 years and in that time frame I've only spotted 3 blue 03/04 636's. The guy chucked it up at 3pm (I almost got a heartattack when I saw the ad) and got a call at 3.01pm and I was viewing the bike from 4pm-5pm and purchased and got it dropped off at 5pm. The deal was done and dusted by 6pm. He was surprised and so was I. :D

Did it because I missed it once, some dude was selling his and it went within 3 days. Thought I'd be the bastard this time.

no personal idea here. I prefer to keep tyres paired together, but it depends on how hard you're going to be pushing the bike. If you're going balls out, then you might want to consider swapping one end or the other, for the matching set. If you want to spend some time getting used to it, and the real hard riding is a bit more down the track, then wait until you get a feel for the bike, and go with something you know/feel better on, and find a mean deal. Also, the stock front tyre is a 65, which is hardly around. Just go to the 70 and some people dick around with dropping the forks etc etc blah blah, forget that. Just stick the 70 on and leave it.

*sucky bit*

So is that combination ok or shall I get 2CT on the rear as well? I am running them on 38 34 psi? What do you guys run your 180 and 120 tyres on?
Again, a pref. Some people run higher than other people, and it also depends on if it's a track day (drop a few psi), type of tyre and make of tyre. General rule of thumb seems to be 38r/36f (ish). Start somewhere there and see how you feel. And don't trust the pressure gauge at the gas station. They're all out. I run these pressures for day to day running around, and weekend riding. I drop mine to 35r/34f for the track.

Manual says minimum 95 octane fuel. If I were to use 98 would that be any better than, say 96 or 95? What do you guys use?
doesn't make much difference. Some people swear black and blue they can tell the difference when they stick it in their tank. Personally, makes no change to me/my bike. Just use whatever is at the pump. In theory, the higher the octane, the better the performance, so knock yourself out..

The guy I bought it off was much lighter than myself and he got the suspension set up for his weight. Who would be the best person to get the suspension set up from? Again I am not planning on sticking ohlins or anything, just want to make sure it's best set up for me.
talk to someone like Shaun Harris, who set up my bike, or Robert Taylor. They'll be able to point you in the right direction, and/or be able to fit you in to set you up. It's really really really worth getting someone like Robert or Shaun to sort you out. It's gold, honest. There's a few others round here that can help you out too, like HRTboy.. send him a pm and ask too

10W-40 SE. I've always used castrol. Should I be using semi synthetic or fully synthetic? Any other brands I should try out for some other reason?
I still get my bike serviced at Spectrum every 6000kms, and I'm sure they stick in a cheaper semi-synth oil in. I change the oil about 3000kms after the service, so the bike doesn't go for much more than that without a change. I always chuck in a fully synth if I can afford it, and it makes a huge difference. Castrol is good, I've never had any probs, but go to the bike shop you like (even Repco stocks good synth bike oil) and see how much you can part with. The more it cost, the better it feels. But not much point in blowing $100+ on oil if it's not a race bike imo.

I thinking of getting a dark screen for it but don't want double bubble, where shall I get one from? It's not on TradeMe and I am not on e bay, don't know how to use it :( What would it cost?
learn ebay dude, it helps. Else there's plenty of shops in the US and Oz that'll ship this way. Just have to look around. There's probably a few places here, and there's sometimes some on TM that I've seen. If you can't see it for the 6, then send the guy a question and see if he can get them.

It did not come with the rear cowl again how much would that cost? Can anyone from here source these for cheaper than what dealers would charge me?
no idea. They came with both the seat and cowl. eBay again.. best bet

I was thinking of tail tidy too but can't make up my mind as to whether it's a good idea or not? I mean those big indicators still aren't big enough for some blind drivers on the road, although getting rid of the big spade at the back would look nice!
You can still chop it down. A butcher job is just hack off the bottom with a small saw. I've made a couple that I've had on mine. Again, stacks on eBay. Or get creative. Really isn't hard. My first attempt was two number plate brackets, one screwed to the bike, the other screwed to the plate, held together with the flashers. Second was my own design for my new indicators, I had the design fabricated and I stuck it on. PoP

But I am not sure about the clutch.
tank pad - any bike shop, personal pref.
crash bungs - order Oggy. Best on the market imo
air filter - leave it. Take the mesh off, viola. Honestly.
Hal lights - forget it. These lights are pretty bright. may be higher rated bulbs at best. wouldn't loose too much sleep over them
clutch should last as long as you treat it right. Mine's at 46k and starting to slip, and I've been having fun with 2nd gear clutch wheelies. When it goes, change it. Leave it until then
chain & sprockets - depends on how well loved they've been. If they need replacing, replace them. You then have options of going -1 in the front and/or +? on the rear. It'll throw your speedo out, but 'give you more torque'. Again, my bike is on it's second chain, and original f/r sprockets
Valve clearances are at 24k, 48k, 72k etc..

Nice bike, Sir! :niceone:
I bet it sounds lovely and growly with that Micron can on.

About the tail chop - for legality, just make sure you keep the reflector.
You *will* notice a lot more road spooge and water gets thrown up your back if you cut it off and ride in the rain. Unless you put your woman on the back, then she'll cop it instead.

Fuel octane: the higher the octane, the less power you get, but if the manual states high-octane is needed, then run 95 or 98. Personally, I prefer 98, because the 95 is just 91 with more xylene and toluene added to it, which is not clean burning (more soot). The 98 will stop possible pinking in summer when the bike's engine is really hot, but will make it a tad harder to start in winter. (In winter I alternate 91 and 98, so I end up with a mix somewhere in between).

In theory, the higher the octane, the better the performance, so knock yourself out..
Common misconception, buggy.
Unless of course your engine has a knock sensor (bikes usually don't) and can advance the ignition to take advantage of the higher octane.
I've got a Power Commander fitted, and I'm running 98 to prevent the bike blowing up because my current map has extra juice and ignition advance at high revs and big throttle openings. Otherwise it gets more ooomph on 91, but pinks taking off when the engine's hot and the air temperature is too.

Yeah dude I looked at that bike as well, he bought it from some guy down in Naki eh? Nice bike low k's.

Well it looks nice enough that you've almost got me wishing I had gone for something modern!
What are your thoughts about the bike anyway? What did you have previously and how does this compare?

Modern bikes the way to go in my opinion. Had a GPX 250 before, GSXR 400 and ZXR 250, all old. The brakes and suspension are awesome and handling is good as well. Nice and comfortable for a 6'2' 95 kg guy like me so I am happy with it.

I guess it all comes down to personal preference because modern 600's are closely built unless you're racing and changing bikes each year to get that extra edge. In my case I didn't need a new 2008 or 2007 model bike. Plus I had my eye on 03/04 model for a while now.

If the bike has oxygen sensors in the zorst, then it will adjust the fueling, but only for low-revs and small constant throttle openings. Generally though, a slip-on muffler doesn't make such a huge difference to fueling that it requires adjustment. The bike manufacturers tend to make the fueling rich everywhere except the region emissions testing is done, so the slight leanness introduced by exhaust and airfilter changes are OK.
If it doesn't pop, crackle and occasionally backfire on overrun, and doesn't have a lean surge at constant throttle, then it's OK.

Yes they Rock! And the Blue one's are faster!! ;) Nah it's not JSG's bike. Did a history check some dude it Taranaki bought it new.

no personal idea here. I prefer to keep tyres paired together, but it depends on how hard you're going to be pushing the bike. If you're going balls out, then you might want to consider swapping one end or the other, for the matching set. Yeah that's what I had in mind that I would use the one's I've got now and go for something like 2CT's or Conti tyres later on. Will be no where near balls out pushing the bike as yet as I am still getting used to it aye. I am still working on getting back to where I left off before my accident. It has a 120/70/17 at the moment and the forks haven't been dicked around with, which is good.

Again, a pref. Some people run higher than other people, and it also depends on if it's a track day (drop a few psi), type of tyre and make of tyre. General rule of thumb seems to be 38r/36f (ish). I am running on 38 36 at moment and it seems fine. I normally use the pump at BP with a digital guage and it fits easily as well.

doesn't make much difference. Some people swear black and blue they can tell the difference when they stick it in their tank. Personally, makes no change to me/my bike. Just use whatever is at the pump. In theory, the higher the octane, the better the performance, so knock yourself out..

Supposedly, Viffer has another theory on it though...hmm conpuzzled.

I'll chat with HRT and bungy (sp) at Mt Eden apparently he knows his stuff so might get him to set it up initially and once I am more into track days I'll be contacting Shaun or Robert.

Yeah super cheap seems to be the place and they even have a manual with lists of bikes and recommended oil for them, so I'll stick with that.

Yeap need to get around using ebay and trusting overseas people.

I am guessing as a minimum you have to have the reflector for WOF aye, so that's about it.

tank pad - any bike shop, personal pref.

Yeah see that's where the problem is and that's why I have been asking. Haven't trashed the bitch yet but on a few gearchanges, downshift it's backfiring and popping aye. So what shall I do?

I'd leave without the power commander for now, unless you can spill the beans for it. It's gone this far without, it's fine for the rest.

bungy knows his stuff too, he should set you right

bout the gas, end of the day, it really doesn't matter too much. Just don't use 91, ever, and the bikes run fine. I've always stuck 95 or 98 in, and it works. It's fine. The rest is finer detail.

and as for the tail, I've never had the reflector on the bike since the second week, and it's always passed WOF. However, the last two, the guys doing it have been happy to point it out to me. Hell, it's been passed all these times, why not now..? I guess I'll get the grumpy git who'll fail me on it one day

as for overseas stuff, on occasion, I splash out and get some goodies. When you come to it, I'll have a look too, and may be we can split the cost of shipping or something. We'll see at the time, but may be..

but all good

oh, and btw, according to Kawa, the orange was a touch faster than any other colour they did. Which is why they only let 5 into NZ.. ;)

Thanks mate, hey do you have any info on suspension settings for different weight?

Some reliable source on the web maybe? Does anyone else, for this bike?

that's kind of a 'how longs a piece of string' sort of question. Everyone has their way of setting their bike up. Some like it firmer than others etc, so a bit to think about, and no real 'golden setup'. Thought Bungy was going to have look? Or bring it to mine and HDTboy will have a look (since he thinks he knows a thing or two now)..

else play around with something like some online settings. I'll find it and post the link up (sportsbike.co.uk??). Set it to a base you kind of like, then get a screw driver, go ride, and make adjustments on your ride. What's the weight difference from the last rider to you? How do you find the bike at the moment? What complaints have you got about it? Then we can perhaps
suggest
stuff as KB seems to do

Yeah I understand and I prefer a firmer setup, Mt Eden are a busy lot and I don't want to rush him and do a botch job so I'll probably book in sometime.

The previous owner didn't give me exact details so I don't really know. The front end seems fine and firm but the rear just feels a bit soft. Or it could be me just getting used to the bike and getting back to riding.

p.s. what was wrong with jsg's bike?

jsg owned it...

also the forks were up 10mm and the speedo sensor was faulty

we'll get together and sort your bike out sometime soon.. get it feeling a bit better.

no idea what was with my last post too! not seen that before, and don't remember seeing it earlier!

Wot you so worried about Buggy? Aren't I the world's slowest Indian??

!

Forks were sorted and measured with a Vernier Caliper. Speedo thing, didn't affect performance so left it. Suspension was sorted by Shaun himself.

Jokes aside you can relax Mynameis, that's not my bike, I had a diff screen, crash bungs and there were a few marks that aren't on your bike. Glad you didn't end up with my bike. It did get ridden a bit hard and felt quite worn out by the time I sold it compared to when I got it.

As for suspension setting, each to their own, my bike was set up really hard, which was fine on the track or higher speed road riding but it would bounce a lot at legal speeds.

Enjoy it. These bikes are brilliant around the track.
