I was out riding this afternoon when I saw a bloke on a red Ultra Classic Harley.

I was shocked - Firstly this guy was only doing 85 in the 100 zone and seemed to be having a really nice time AND he only had a singlet on top.

But what really outraged me was when - get this - he waved.

How dare he.

is this the same post
http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=65799

One of those days today that if you had spare hour or two, suit up and get out there, warm/sunny and no wind. MadDuck called in for a visit and to show off her spunky new Harley (totally yum MD) Anne suggested i ride back with her, need no 2nd thought there! so i did.

Traffic was moderate/heavy heading south from here, but i intended to come back Via SH16/Woodcocks so all good. Heres the strange part, alot of Cruisers out today (more than Sports Bikes as it seemed)... i have friends that ride Cruisers, i rode with one today (but thats not the strange part) what is though, is that we past a Cruiser heading north on SH1 and im sure i got the fingers or some sort of hand gesture. The rider was wearing a singlet!...thats the strange part! to me anyway.

Ok it was hot and i dont care much if you dont wanna wear the gear you have paid quite a bit of money for, and as for the Politics on this subject? Well, i dont care about that either, wear what you like. Six other KBers turned up here later today and they saw the same rider and all commented on the 'Singlet' thing. Skin grafts cant hurt that much surely?

Not a rant, not a rave, just a biker political observation....
I just dont get some people

"Firstly this guy was only doing 85 in the 100 zone"

Sure it was a Harley

Dave was lucky, the two HD riders I saw yesterday when leaving a traffic light looked at me with a clear superior intention not to wave back. Must have been the Jap cruiser I ride, they surely recognised it by the (lack of) noise.

Mind you, they might also have been wondering was I was doing all over my lane in first gear one hand waving and the other one trying to save the bike. Damn I'm stupid some times...

I'm just in the process of reading Peter Egan's "Leanings".

He describes visiting NZ as part of a bike tour group. He says they were almost unfailingly met with the sort of response most of us would hope for.

The one exception was whan they stopped at a place frequented by 1%er Harley riders. He reported that they had presumably seen one too many biker movies and refused to acknowledge any greeting. "Life imitates artlessness"

What does everyone have against harley bikes and bikers?

The stereo-type goes that Harley rider's are fat 50+ year olds going through a mid-life crisis with alot of money to spend who try and attempt a 'bad-ass' image by not waving to other riders, looking down on other riders and generally thinking that Harleys are better than anything else.

I have also seen the odd slandorous comment that Harleys are unreliable and need constant repairs and are alot of money for a bike that doesn't go as fast as the Jappas.

Also throw in leather bandanas, tassles, a pair of aviators for good measure and fingerless gloves, usually all Official HD brand wear and a patch on the back.

That's what people have against Harley's and the owners of, atleast so it appears.

Cept that cross bones video with them riding with skateboards and snowboards was just weird..

look im NOT fat yes im 50 i wear what the fuk i want i dont buy harley branded gear i dont wear sunglasses when rideing and i do definatly not wear fingerless gloves, i had a really bad off in 2004 on a tr6r no fuka stopped to help me the bike landed in my chest, i had got sun strike on a bend and could not see the end of the road, i was left lying with my feet allmost in the rush hour traffic looking up at rubber neckers going past me not giving a shit, i had pinctured my lung broken six ribs cut my spleen in two damaged my liver, bladder and i was in a lot of pain i had to get back on my bike and get home about 8 to 15ks i did it or i would not be here today then i was left in A&E while they fuked about for allmost six hours and when they opened me up i had lost two thirds of my blood internaly, it has seriously fuked my life up and my head i have to use a tube to piss now i have to constantly take medication as my white blood cells attacked and took out my thyroid i sold the triumph and gave up bikes for about six months blaming the bike, but at the end of the day if it was not for the bike i would not of made it, so i now cant work ive been in mental hospitals ive had there drugs thrown down my neck been misdiagnosed five times with different mental conditions, then given ECT and that really fuked up my head i didnt know who i was i didnt know my wife after being married for 28yrs i did not even know my kids and i still cannot remember them being born even though im told i was there.

so if you ride a 150 motorcycle i will wave most of the time i actually salute i ride a 1998 harley fatboy chromed out with six grands worth of graphics painted on it, it has won quite a few comps im proud of my bike i enjoy riding it, so for dim witted so called fellow bikers you ride what you want I DO NOT CRITISIZE what you ride, you enjoy it but let other people get along with there life, what i can not understand BD is what was the problem with this guy just doing about 85 did he impeed you in any way ??? was the wave an insult to you ?? or if the shock was so bad and you could not handle it maybe its time to hang up your helmet because one day two harley riders might wave to you and maybe you might fall off.

Dmouse, I believe the major point that you've missed out on is that Big Dave's original post was a joke, i've seen Big Dave defend Harley's in most situations so I think you should re read it with a more positive attitude.

I think everyone in this thread has been joking, there really is no hard feelings against Harley riders but it's human nature to want to slag each other off, bugger knows why.

The stereo-type I gave is ofcourse ridiculous because obviously not ALL Harley riders could be like that but that's the very small side people like to pick on because it has the greatest impact.

Just.. chill.

yer right thats just how adolf started a few rumours that jews gypsys and the like were not liked because they were different or substandard, most of what starts out in jest some becomes serious, why should anyone be picked on for there choice of ride !!! or because they wave next it will be our choice of petrol we use or maybe tyres, life is hard enough without people throwing shit at each other for a cheap joke as sooner or later it sticks and there is allways the upcomeing bikers that believe as the truth what they hear from other older so called wiser bikers.

Taihoa. Back the bus up mate. I don't give a shit what you ride, whether you wave or not, or perform roadside surgery out of the goodness of your heart. Do what you want to do, care less about what others think, and if you are helping others out more power to you. What I am suprised about is the comparison between one sub-group of riders taking the piss out of another sub-group of riders, with the Nazi propaganda machine that led to and supported a holocaust in which millions of people died. A bit of a long bow don't you think?
