On Saturday 11th December is the annual Coast to Coast ride to raise funds for the Rescue Helicopter leaving Himatangi and going to Akitio.
There is tent space at Akitio if anyone is planning to stay overnight, great roads.
I will be going on this ride & if anyone wants to stay at Himatangi on the Friday nite then they can pm me as I have a bach with enough bed space for up to 12 people, will be enjoying a few quite beers on the Fri nite, also plan to stay at Akitio Sat nite.
Not sure which bike will be taking but most probably be the mighty CT110. :ride: :apint: :apint: :apint: :apint:  :

Yoshie the ride is an organised ride, sign in starts at 9.30am and departure should be at 10.30am, but bacon & egg breakfast followed by a strong coffee at the bach before leaving is a must. Entry fee is $15.00 and includes light BBQ lunch, normally a prizegiving at the end.
As for Akitio it is South of Herbertville, look at a map and it is straight out from Dannevirke.
approx 180kms distance for the ride coast to coast
This is their 12th year

Last year myself and VTWIN did the Coast to Coast. HEAPS of fun, and like a squillion bikes. I felt sorry for some of the cages who had to wait ages for the endless line of bikes to go past intersections. They even had police escorts/presence, and marshall's, but at time the average speed was, err, yeah.....

I'm game, that is assuming my bike is back.

Just watch your back for errant boxer BMWs. :sweatdrop (Had one try to tangle with the mighty blue whale & he came off well 2nd best.)

Seriously group rides are scary as there are far too many people who tailgate then lose concentration. Watch yourself & go near the back & you’ll be fine.

Sadly I can’t go this year, it’s a nice ride & stay over the night so you can have a drink at the end of it.

I thought the road to Akitio was unsealed for ages?

The Northern entry road is sealed all the way, the direct route back to Pongaroa isn't, so on the road bike I would go in and out on the Northern road and its not too far back to Pongaroa from there anyway. I have done this ride about 7 times when it used to go to Herbertville and normally do it as a day trip of about 600km from Welly and return. All going well I should be there.

Typically we used to group at the Plimmerton weigh station around 8 am and then head to Himatangi getting there about 9.30am for sign in.

I missed last year's ride which was the first to Akitio. Here's the pics of the 2002 ride to Herbertville which was rather wet early on http://bikemerv.topcities.com/road0501.html

Thanks Merv - is the Northern entry way where everone goes or do offroad bikes split off and you all meet up? Sounds like a bit of fun though. I'll try and meet at Plimmerton.

Usually this is only a road bike ride and the trail boys don't turn up, though you could ride anything really. I have always gone on the VFR because 600kms on the dirt bike is a bit hard on the butt in one day. Those that camp at each end only have to do about 180km on the day. That part of it is an easy ride with the lunch break in Woodville.

See pic attached about the roads.

Any updates on this?

Who's heading up from Wellington and who wants to meet at the Plimmerton Weigh Station at 8am?

Will definitely be going, as long as it's not raining. Will have to confirm meeting points a little closer to the day.

Just thinking with all the road works going on up there (weigh station that is)might be as well to meet at Shell Mana at 8am and depart by about 8.15am. Then you get to Himatangi in plenty of time sign in and to chew the fat before the ride starts.

I'm hoping I'll be free to do this ride because I missed it last year.

How long does it take to get back to Wgtn from Akitio - do most people stay the night up there instead of heading back that evening? I'm assessing the situation but seems good so far!

If I come I will do it as a day trip and I'm guessing its about 2 and 1/2 hours back. I never did the Akitio one last year but previously from Herbertville which is further North we'd get away probably about 3.30 - 4pm and be home by about 6-7pm at the latest. It used to be a long haul back via the Makuri gorge in the old days when the road to Alfredton was gravel which we'd avoid, but now its straight down from Pongaroa and probably gas up at Masterton and then home.

We'll see how shit the forecast is looking later in the week and confirm KB'ers meeting at say Shell Mana 8am Saturday.

OK all, looks like the weather should be coming right for the weekend:)

The official plan is to meet at Shell Mana at 8am, and I say we head off from there no later than about 8:20am.
At this stage it looks like the following KBers are meeting there (correct me if I'm wrong):

Merv - Weather Dependant
Velox
StoneChucker
VTWIN
Groins NZ

Add your name to the list if you intend to meet at Shell Mana so we don't leave you behind.

I may also have a couple of mates in tow, depends though, one of them needs to get his bike working again and the other needs permission from the better half.

I can't wait for this weekend :scooter:
