Hey,
I just sold my car (an audi quttro 1986) plus a little savings leaves me with 4k and I am considering buying a bike. I want something for going up to my batch and long distance commuting. It has to be a bike that likes the open roads and has a good power band for going up north along up through helensville to Mangwhai on highway No. 16 I want something old school but I dont know where to start. :spudwhat:
Oh great and powerfull kiwi bikers please help.

If comfort is not an issue get either a ZXR750 from 89-90, awesome bikes, once your spine moulds to the required shape or an early GSXR750, not too bad, need dwarf legs and monkey arms though (lucky me, having my legs shortened for xmas) Even an FZR750 is pretty good... Notice the theme here... I recommend a 750 at least... single shock rear, decent brakes, mderate weight. Don't buy an elephant or a teapot... Sorry meant old beemer or GSXF... heh heh, that should get the old crusties whining...

If comfort is an issue you'd best ask someone else.

Cheers,

Sedge. (short legs, big feet, spinal deformity, hairy knuckles, monkey brain (standard rider really))

Comfort isnt the issue, Speed and handling at higher speeds is though.

What TILLER said.
You can't beat the old gixxers, esp for reliability and availiability of s/h parts.
The ZXR's are great too,but generally more $ and harder to get bits for.
The FZR thous all have clutch/gearbox issues(dunno 'bout the 750)
Maybe you could find a rough 'Blade,or if you want more comfort a VFR750 is a good allrounder.

If you're gonna do sport riding, find something with radials, they really make that much difference.(that's the only reason I don't reccomend the Kat,or GPZ900 ect)

Most of the 750's (except 12 apparently - all sold as proddy racers and never put on the road) in New Zealand are 2LM's - ex Japan, and therefore restricted to 77BHP.

Which means they don't really stress the clutch and gearbox like the 1000s with 125BHP did.

Of course, many of the 750s are derestricted now (mine included - a pretty easy job). Mine doesn't have any clutch issues at all, but I find that it requires the oil changed every 3000 kms or it starts to develop a few false neutrals when it gets really hot and you're downchanging - usually between 4th and 3rd.

I paid $3900 for mine with 45000 on the clock.

You calling my bike a teapot :angry2: :angry2: I don't quite see how people get an image of a teapot of these.

I'm happy with my bike, it's very comfortable to ride, handles ok, isn't too heavy and does have relatively decent acceration and looks good.

You will definitely pick up a good early GSXR750 for under $4k. You just need to keep an eye up TradeMe and you will see them come up. You need to be a bit selective though 'cos as the first race-replicas some (most?) of them have had hard lives. You'll pay more for an 1100 naturally enough
and mint condition (like the J that's on TradeMe at present) always gets a premium. Depends how fussy you are/what you want/your budget etc. Having owned a few early gixxer 750s and the 1100s I'd personally go for the 1100, all things being equal. There's not much in it weight-wise and the 1100 makes its power in a more linear way (the 750s have a savage "kick in the tail" at about 7000rpm, and need to be kept spinning a pretty high rpm to optimise performance, while the 1100s are much more tractable). Riding position is more comfy on the 1100 (the 750s pegs hoist your ankles up around your ears just about). You'll also possibly find it easier to get a good 1100.

I would also look out for a 600 like the FZR600 which are a sweet bike and in your price range. Go for a later one (1990 on) with the 4 pots and wider rear wheel.

Mate for that particular road I'd strongly suggest a vfr750 -definitely a 17" wheel one.
I travel that road a lot and you need a combination of flickability and low down grunt to punch out of some of those really tight corners.
The six hundys are good don't get me wrong but I think may get ya a little unstuck on at least 4 corners I can think of. I think you'll need summat a bit more stable.
There are a number of other reasons I suggest the seven fiddy but you'll need to buy me summat cold and frothy to drink on the way -Maybee kaukop pub.
That said shit ive done it on a gsxr1100 and a venture royalle -I just adjust my speed to suit.
The only bike that I hated it on was my old ninja 900 --the 16" wheel was very sucky on black swamp road
Now Dude i'm prolly teaching gramma how to suck eggs BUT.
Watch out for the left hander about 4km out of Mangawhai
Its posted as SLOW DOWN -First time round it take it at 30km/h -
Its a bitch --off camber downhill decreasing radius bumpy--Itll bite ya real hard

Stick to sub 250

If you're looking at a 250, I found my cousin's ZZR250 runs quite well for a middle of the road 250, and an early to mid 1990's would go for about $4000.

I know that corner the one that drops away from you. About 2 months ago my mum saw some one in a van take a trip off the edge, Lucky for them there were trees to stop them going all the way down that hill to the right.
