Quality stuff.
My first time through there on the RF 900 a few years back, that lay-by with the surveyors's grave is where I stopped for a break.
I was on my own and nobody knew that I had decided to go that way. So I had to be very sure that I stayed on the road. It's a truly spectacular ride but there are lots of places where, if you went off the road, you might never be found.

Excellent yarn thanx Clint. I live in Taranaki and haven't seen as much as you have. Do you get your routes from a guide book or just study the maps? :niceone:

I'm shocked:gob: A little ol mud hole stopped the 640?????

that hole looks worse than it is mate.
i've ridden through there quite a few times and by the looks of that pic there is a lot of wash from other bikes in front.
it is deep mind.
my mate went slow through there on his ttr230 and all you could see when he rode of the edge was top of his gas tank up.
funny thing was his bike kept on chugging through.
good ride through there though.
we going back camping out there on 23rd feb for two days staying at whanga and exploring some of the farmland around there

Bloody great pics dude and dudette.Used to tramp around the area over hill from Whanga in the Aotouhia area, there's an awseome amount of tracks to ride, and the odd bridge(bridge to somewhere)which is same as bridge to nowhere.Could do a loop around,Whanga rd to Matemateonga walkway back to the pub if my mind remembers correctly.
Nice sunset at Patea too, shame couldn't meet you guys for coffee in Hawera.
Have canoed the Wanganui river and the views from Pipiriki are great, was good as we were in the mail van so could admire the views.

We've got the New Zealand Motorbike atlas (Hema maps), which had some recommended routes in the area, we joined several of them together with other roads that looked interesting.

Clint / Rosie you forgot to come and stay at my place! By the way that mud hole after the first tunnel is the worst of the mud holes, but appreciate the caution with Rosie new to this sort of thing.

Sorry mate, We'll give you a call next time, it was all a bit last minute.
I've been right through the Whanga road a while back in the 4x4 & remembered that 1st mud hole as being by far the worst, & it didn't look too bad the other day. As the rest of the track was really dry I would have had a go at it & had a look further in but it was getting a bit late in the day & I could clearly hear the sound of a cold beer calling my name back at the pub!
Cheers
Clint
