This afternoon I had a quote to do in the Ohirau valley. I get home and park up the work truck and get the bike out and gear on.
You know that out of body feeling you get when your a bit drunk? Well I had that when getting my gear on. And then it was like I knew I was about to have a bike accident, I even went upstairs and told someone where I was riding to and how long I was going to be. I have NEVER done this.
I thought it might be because I worked all day in the heat and knew that the road would be a bit melted. So I rode the very narrow and windy makara rd doing 40kmph. This is a knee down narrow rural road with little traffic or driveways which I have ridden alot. Try doing 40kmph on it, its just not natural.

So Im riding along very quitely, insanely so. I turn a tight left hand corner, really hugging the verge with a bank about a foot from the edge of the road. A silver Audi driven by an asian woman rounded the corner, it was going slow and seemed to be pulling over in her lane. Then I saw the Silver Pajero. It was hard to miss, on a tight blind corner it was passing the audi so had all my Lane. Big chrome bull bars, spotlights, 2 male occupants.
I didnt have time to do anything (like a second max) but get maybe another couple inches over and try to dodge the corner of his bullbars as they flashed past. I thought there wasnt room between his vehicle and the bank for my bike. His rear view mirror tapped my jackets sleeve but I made it through.

I wasnt angry or that shook up, my normal response would have been to U turn and engage in some active road education, I have collected my share of mirrors in my time. but instead I felt relieved. Like a voice inside me said "oh so THATS what it was"

Really weird. And so fucking close it feels surreal. Its was just a flash and then gone.

When the voices tell you to slow down it pays you to listen.
I do not have the time to type all of these that occured to me (nor you to read them).
Just know that when you don't it tends to get messy.

I would not have got on the bike at all if I felt 'a bit drunk' or 'not quite myself' or other similar feelings you described...

Glad your ok though...

As bikers we develop that sixth sense and we sure do like it when it works out ay! :P

Trust your gut. It has saved me a few times.

ive had that on 3 occasions that i can recall. the first was between the gym and work and resulted in a totaled gn250 and stuffed knees. the second, i was sorely tempted to throw the bike on the grass verge just to get it over with... i ended up jammed in a fence post instead... had i done the deliberate off, the damage would have been 10 times worse. and the 3rd was down south and a no speed drop into a ditch. no damage to either.

one of these days, i will learn to listen... or die trying.

Wasnt like feeling drunk, but felt like I was a little removed, a bit out of body, like I was watching myself get my gear on. Like it wasnt quite real.

if I had taken my work truck, or the wifes car, there would have been a head on collision with the pajero. I could have taken the car easily, but my gut still said to ride, although I felt like I was going to have an accident, it was just so damn weird.
Just the kind of crap an insomniac needs to run through his mind at night. Like if I had been going faster it wouldnt have happened, it was all timing.

It's called listening to your intuition, work to develop it further, you will be suprised just how far you can develop that spidy sense. And on Makara Rd, you need it! I should know, as I lived at the bottom of it for 5 years  I do not think I ever got my knee down, but brushing arms, shoulders and knees through the roadside bush was a regular feature :devil2:

and if you had been doing 100ks you would have past the car first then the wagon later on nice straight roads :)

yeap listen to your inner self
Had that same "be carefull" feeling going to Woodstock on sat
clear road heading into some trees
two bikes ahead of me over took the cage on our side of the road
plenty of room for me.....so I thought
my inner self said no
thankfully
out of the shady trees came a smoke grey truck!
I would have been the front bumper
those voices inside my head are not alwasy arguing

Use The Force:niceone: That's why, for me, it is important ta ride my own ride and not someone else's. Saved my arse many of times.

You try doing 100ks down that piece of road! There's not a lot that's straight or nice.

Okay, no joke, I get this often. I don't sleep (I'm an insomniac), and if I do sleep a little I'll often dream of events and place that I haven't been. It's very vivid and real, and a weird feeling. That's why, if I'm feeling funny about riding, I don't. I have a built in cop detector that seems to work 99% of the time as well.

Some days, the dreams are more real and vivid than reality. And I remember all my dreams and nightmares.
