firstly: this is all rumour at this point! the title is dramatic but I've no idea if it's accurate.

I've just received a third hand report about a power outage this afternoon in New Lynn that was caused when a motorcyclist was shot and his bike crashed into a power pole or roadside transformer - taking out the localised lines.

Anyone got any details? It sounds pretty far out but with the violence we've seen this summer I'm open to anything right now. Guess we'll find out tonight at 6....

I doubt a motorcycle could take out a power pole, let alone a transformer.

Alright, just got word from my girlie who works in New Lynn, now she's lovely but she isn't particularly descriptive..

All I got was that the bank was being robbed and a motorcycling got in their way. That's all folks.. find out more tonight.

The lights in New Lynn were out, so a bobber motorbike shot through but ended up inside the bank...

Armed motorbike chase ends in crash
By SUSANA TALAGI - Western Leader | Friday, 08 February 2008

CHASE OVER: A motorcyclist believed to have been carrying a gun is in hospital after this crash. (picture of the crash site is in the link)

Stunned shoppers watched as a gun-toting motorcyclist on the run from police crashed into a car at New Lynn.

The man, who is now in hospital with a broken leg, faces 12 charges as a result of the incident, including possession of a firearm.

Witnesses say he was trying to escape when he hit an oncoming vehicle at the intersection of Great North Rd and Memorial Drive on January 30.

"I heard him screaming," saleswoman Cheryl Wheeler says. "He was yelling: ‘My leg, my leg’." Ms Wheeler who works in a clothing store nearby, rushed over to help.

"The cops said ‘we’re trying to secure the area in case of more firearms," the Massey resident says.

"The man couldn’t get up. He was in handcuffs by then."

Ambulance staff attended to the injured man as the police serious crash unit arrived to investigate.

Sergeant Grant Watson says the police chase started when officers were alerted to the man’s "erratic driving".

Police did not know the man was carrying a gun.

Well that's a bit harsh.. he was trying to escape from police. It's a basic instinct to not want to be in the shit,

Sure this guy had a gun but wasn't exactly like he was using it.. cops didn't even realise he had it.

Oops... my bad... he had a gun for fun...

What was he up to? Why have a gun on a motorbike? Agg Robbery perhaps, with a bike for a getaway? Hmmm.....

I reckon he had it for intimidation, wave a gun around get your money then high tail it outta there. Personally I reckon he had no intention of using it hence a loss of leg being an undue punishment but you're welcome to feel otherwise.

Just giving my opinion mate.

He was charged with 12 offences. Sounds like there is more to this story then has been published.

Sorry, but having a gun for whatever reason during the commission of a crime is bloody dangerous and this tosser deserved everything he got! If he was carrying a gun it is highly likely he was prepared to use it and the fact he got taken out before he got the chance is irrelevant. I bet you'd be singing a different song if someone you loved had been involved in this incident. Perhaps it's because he's a motorcyclist, 'one of us', and therefore can't be that bad, it's all the police's fault.

I suppose Burton losing his leg was also "undue punishment" - or was it different because he actually did use his gun to injure and kill people?

Well, yes actually. Big difference between a psychotic murderer and a pety thief. Don't yah think?

And if someone I loved was involved in the incident I wouldn't be bothered about the gun because he never used it! He just had it on him. It's bloody obvious that if he was slinging bullets around i'd be saying he deserves all he gets but he wasn't now was he.

And don't pull out the 'cause he was a motorcyclist' line. That has very little to do with anything, I don't reckon he was a motorcyclist either because you can't be too experianced to crash on that corner of New Lynn..

Once again as a wee disclaimer, this guys probably looking at a big fine and maybe a few months jail time at best, that does not equal to a loss of a leg in my books.

I can't find anything that says this tosser who just happened to be riding a motorcycle and carrying a gun while trying to commit a crime is going to lose his leg. He has a broken leg and I don't know of very many people who lose their leg under these circumstances. Also, HE was the one who crashed into a car while fleeing, so it's his own fault. He was obviously a motorcyclist if he was riding one when he crashed, and the fact he did crash does not mean he was inexperienced - it's more likely in his attempts to get away he did not give way to the car he hit.

Again, who gives a shit if the police didn't know he had a gun on him, the fact he was carrying one means he's not likely to be a law abiding citizen. Oh, wait, perhaps he was popping into the bank to get some cash to go hunting.

If he was just waving the gun around, you'd be okay with that, because he was only trying to intimidate people? What if he slipped and accidentally pulled the trigger? Would that still be okay, because he didn't intend to hurt anyone?

You must have lived in Auckland too long if you think this kind of behaviour is nothing to be worried about. You need a bloody reality check if that's the case.

Ah okay, I shall now point out the importance of not jumping into a discussion when you don't know what's being discussed. My initial point was in response to this post by Patrick:

Was never saying he was going to get his leg amputated but was merely saying that I thought the comment was a bit harsh. Really not that big a deal.

Feel free to make a new point.

I will. He was stopped before he had a chance to shoot anyone. Burton was found a little too late sadly.
