View Full Version : Stay awake - No-doz, V, Redbull, Coke etc

Was researching No-doz and came accross some entries here. I was concerned enough about some of the advice given on how to stay awake to prompt me to join the site to offer the following warning.

Be carefull how much V, Redbull, Cola etc you consume at one time. These are all very acidic and too much can burn your stomach lining off. I had a friend caught out with combining too much V and Cola, he suffered incredable stomach pain for more that 3 days and trouble keeping food down.

Hmm, amazing what you come up with when you Google something....
Never used "message boards" before, know now I should really have replied on the thread, but that was an old posting....

I found simply getting off the bike and walking around for 5 mins does the trick - kept me up and at 'em for about an hour - stopped did the same thing again...

I prefer to make sure I have a route that won't put me to sleep (ie: SH1 ), and make sure that I have a few twisties to keep me interested...And I probably wouldn't go as fast as when I'm doing a short trip.

I also have some lively music playing in my helmet (ACDC and the likes...) but not loud enough taht I can't hear anything else of course...

And like MDU said, stop on a regular basis to stretch. Keeping hydrated by drinking lots of water is definitely a must.

When I travelled from Wellington to Auckland a couple of months back, I was carrying my 1 litre camel back with me, making regular sipping a possibility :2thumbsup...It really made a world of difference.

Oh and welcome Noddy!!! :sunny: :D

Yep. I find that I drink so much water that I have to keep stopping to pee. Ideal time for a ciggie and a stretch. Also, always carry methamphetamine with you. Just in case......

I'm afraid I do have a big chip on my shoulder about drugs, and I'm not ashamed to admit it.

Never will I ever think they are good, unless of course you are talking about Herceptin or penicillin.

I do believe that products such as Red Bull or Lift Plus and the likes are dangerous and I personally will only consume one about every 6 months if that...

Do you not drink coffee either, then?

I readily admit that caffeine is a potent and addictive psychoactive chemical, and that I've been physiologically dependent on it for over a decade.

I make the informed choice to stay on it, because withdrawal is violent and makes me very ill for a week or more, and life is often such that I find myself unable to function well without stimulants.

Sad, isn't it?

Not anymore...I used to have to have a cup of coffee every morning upon waking up, along with a ciggie in the car. 10 year old habits started in New Caledonia where we grow one of the most beautiful and flavoursome coffee around

But since I stopped smoking, I haven't had a craving at all for coffee, so that's about 3 months now. And I got to admit it feels amazingly good.

And I don't think being addicted to caffeine is sad...just maybe a symptom of a reasonably stressful lifestyle, which would lead you to needing "coping solutions". I'd be more concerned about the very strong reaction you get with withdrawal.

I'd be more concerned about the very strong reaction you get with withdrawal.

My adrenal receptors have downregulated to the extent that you'd expect from years of heavy, regular caffeine consumption.

A month of clean living and they'd be back in fine fettle, of course, but full-on caffeine withdrawal is actually quite similar to what methamphetamine users experience.

I had a Pepsi cola this morning. I know its not big or clever, but sometimes one does slide onto the slippery path. I hope its not a gateway drug:bye:

This morning, I had an instant coffee upon arising (Nescafe, the gateway drug of choice) followed by a triple-shot latte from the cafe next to the office.

That'll do me until mid-afternoon, when I'll have a 600ml Diet Coke or something similar.

Not really huge caffeine consumption, but I can't do without it...

Is six V's a day too much?

Used to have six a day when worked in retail, no such thing as morning tea, lunch, or afternoon tea breaks half the time, so would grab a V or six!

Now that I work in office, I have about six or seven cups of coffee per day. I wouldn't consider myself stressed, or an addict. I can also go without.

Guess it depends on your genetic make-up.....blah blah. Coffee, V, Red Bull and other substances have different effects on different people, some more extreme than others. Addictive compulsive personalities are more susceptible to becoming addicted.

Not sure about V cause I think it tastes foul but Lift+ specifically says on the packaging not to consume more than 4 *cans* in one day. One assumes V's the same..

I used to take No Doz when I had an early shift at work and didn't have time to make a coffee but I usually have a few No Doz lying around in my wallet, they're pretty handy me thinks.

Hi, my name is oab and I'm a coke addict. Morning, lunch, afternoon and evening, I need the quenching of an ice cold coke. Sometimes I even drink V, chilled to the point that when you open the bottle the liquid in the neck freezes up. I have in my freezer a constant supply of ice, and two chilled glasses, ready if necessary. I also smoke a packet of cigarettes a day, and smoke da gunja.

My complexion is clear, my health is fine, I'm not overweight or even fat, and I'm reasonably fit for a guy who does fuck all other than consume. My body has been conditioned over the years to this treatment. Any deviation would have drastic effects.

Caffeine dependence has nothing to do with personality and everything to do with endocrinology.

Go strictly off all caffeine for a whole week. You might be surprised at the way your body responds.

HOW MANY A DAY CAN PEOPLE DRINK?
A good benchmark is a cup of coffee. V contains a similar level of caffeine to coffee so you can drink as many cans of V as you are comfortable drinking cups of coffee. However, you will notice a recommended daily maximum stated on V packaging.

I took their recommendation into consideration ;)

Okay, turns out I have a can of V, a can of Lift+ and a box of No Doz all around me so a quick comparison aye?

Caffeine content:
V - 78mg
Lift+ - 36mg
No Doz - 100mg

Daily amount (exact quotes):
V - Usage: 2 cans Max. Daily.
Lift+ - Consume no more than 5 cans per day
No Doz - No more than 6 tablets should be taken within 24 hours.

That's kinda funny, No Doz has the most caffeine and the highest acceptable intake amount.

She has me 6 times a week? :shit: :blip:

I agree with Jr...the response of going without is very surprising. I think that most people who do away with stuff like that for a couple of days (after going hard for a few years) underestimate the fact that levels remain high or just sufficient in your body to not trigger the withdrawal symptoms immediately...Give it time, and lookout!!!

The LD50 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LD50) for caffeine is about 160mg/kg.

In other words, one would expect 128 No Doz pills to be a fatal dose for an 80kg individual in 50% of cases.

So, um, don't take 128 No Doz pills or drink a crate of V, I guess.

Oh, for the good old pre-'P epidemic' days when I could hit a website with my credit card and get ephedrine hydrochloride delivered by the pound via mail-order from the States!

Not to mention trenbolone acetate arriving via UPS in lovely big styrofoam temperature-stable containers. No, really, I'm a vet, see?

Do re-read the OP. The warning is not about the amount of caffeine but rather the impact of acids upon your stomach.

Trust me, messing that bit up is very uncomfortable!

Personally I have to take opium every day to sit still behind my computer and at least 3 bottles of wine just to fall asleep...

Yeh, everyone got off the track a bit, but it has certianally been entertaining....
For those that regularly drink this sort of stuff, their stomachs are probably use to it and it is of no concequence.
I am amazed at the amount of research some have done on the facts about caffine:gob:Personally I'm not a big drinker of coffee let alone the other stuff available. Have not found it to keep me allert/awake. I am going to try No doz tonight, so it will be interesting to see if i feel any affects. Have 100K return trip after work, with 2 hrs of dancing inbetween. The drive back is a bitch.
Yep, drive.... dont have a bike, but have ridden off road marking competition tracks for the 500Kg, 4 legged horse power that I use. Lots a fun, both horse and bike.:Offtopic:

Having been diagnosed with a hiatal hernia a couple of years back I can attest to the discomfort caused by stomach acid in your asaphagous!!! When swallowing a small mouthful of water hurts like you're going to pass out it's not fun anymore...

Fortunately my hernia now seems to have disappeared... good riddance!!!

As for drinking caffeine - I had a V Black the other week... holy shit that stuff kicks ass. Brought me from rather sluggish around to full pep like *PING*!

Caffeine has a long half life - up to six hours. Having a coffee or energy drink at 3pm is the same as having 1/2 the same drink at 9pm!

It also accumulates, so if u drink a couple of strong coffees in the morning, then have your last one around 2 or 3pm then it's the equivalent of taking a no-doze tablet at bed time.

Lots of people can sleep on caffeine (i fricken cant) but even if you do it can affect the quality of sleep.

Can't get to sleep?
Wake up tired after a non-resfreshing sleep?
Find yourself awake at all hours of the night, leading to poor concentration and motivation the next day?
Drink coke, energy drinks or coffee all day?
