Went and checked out this bike (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=138577425) this evening, with a view to buying. Pretty stock standard, apart from a Yoshimura pipe, and seemed reasonably tidy apart from a ding in the tank where another bike had fallen over on it (according to the seller). Took it for a test ride (absolutely loved it, but that's another story), and discovered that the front brake was reasonably obviously damaged - bad vibrations and shuddering under braking, clearly it's warped or damaged in some way. Pity really, but anyway...

What I was hoping someone would know is - how much would it cost (as an educated guess, I don't mind) to replace both front discs, labour inclusive (so the work would be under warranty), and what causes discs to be so badly warped? Crashes? Age? Large hammers? :mellow:

I'm not seriously considering buying it, mainly because of the brake discs (though the ding in the tank didn't help matters), but am curious for future reference - otherwise it went really well and sounded very very good (ta Mr Yoshimura, love your work ;)) etc.

Between $400 and $1100 to get the discs replaced if you get after market items like Galfer or Metal Gear.

The OEM cost could be anything from $1000 to $2000.

Make sure the carriers are straight as well.

Discs warp because of rapid heating cooling cycles, typically found on race tracks. They can also warp for no discernible reason or from an impact.

Check the sump plug. If it's drilled, walk away. If there is any lockwire in evidence anywhere, walk away.

Definitely factor the replacement disc costs into the purchase price if it checks out as being OK.

In order to see the sump plug on bikes like this, do you have to remove the belly fairings? I had a brief look around, but couldn't spot the plug, so could not check to see if it was drilled. It won't have been drilled if the bike was only used on track days though, will it? Couldn't spot any lock wire anywhere either, but then, I don't think I'd know where to look. :pinch:

Thanks for the price estimates - had a feeling they wouldn't be especially cheap! It was for this reason I wasn't really considering buying it, as I said, but knowledge is power, and now I know for future reference.

Anyone know a good place they'd recommend, in Christchurch, to take a bike if you're wanting to get it checked over? A kind of pre purchace inspection check? I'm not experienced enough with bikes to know everything to look for (brakes are obvious), so I think if I'm serious about buying a particular bike I'd like to get it checked out, for peace of mind. Have seen the results on here of a purchase gone wrong more than once (Sorry Mr Coyote, but with the very problematic NC30, you definitely qualify!), and wouldn't like to go down that same path myself.

If you're buying a faired bike, removing all the fairings for a decent check is a pre-requisite. Any seller who won't help you or says no, is hiding something.

It's your hard earned dosh you are spending. Don't give it away to the unrepentantly immoral.

The best pre-inspection service is a grumpy biker with at least 20 years of riding crap motorcycles behind them.

They were pretty badly warped, nasty shudder going on there. The seller said it came as a shock to him - he thought they were fine! :eek5: He did say he hadn't ridden it since November, but honestly, it was shaking my teeth loose in their sockets it was that bad, so there must have been something there when he last rode it, surely! Unless there was something else causing that shudder?

He said he lives in Little River but hasn't been able to go over the hill as much as he'd like...

Have a look for "Dwayne's bikes & jetskis".. I think he was in Waterloo or Buchannans Roads in Hornby. Can't seem to find it in the white or yellow pages listed under that though.. :crazy: so he may have changed names/hands..?? :scratch: Always had a bloody good reputation though!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :first:

No, I didn't. Just got back from six days away, good little holiday it was too, was going to have a look to see if it was still there, out of curiousity, but overall I knew realistically I wasn't going to be buying it.
