A huge shout out to the Cliffhanger Crew:love: Especially the porn and sausage peddling girlies for not teaching my daughter new swear-words. What incredible weather too. As hot as a welding spark down your undies, except all over. How nice it was to complain about the heat rather than wind and rain. Great to be able to get good coffee too. Big ups to RIPE.
I was nervous as all hell about pushing the Tuono cos of it's twitchy behaviour at the ragged edge of performance but secretly confident about what the CBR had to offer. Oh how the Gods of speed were to teach me a lesson.
First up were a few flying quarters on the Ape, and I manged to quell the nerves and post a 243kmh run. Not bad I thought, as I saw the other v-twins and a Speed Triple there as my natural competition. I will be advocating for a "Naked" class in future. I think that there were a couple of TL's posting better times. The only other Italian V-twin running was Malcolms S4RS Monster. As it happens, the Tuono's natural enemy.
As gentlemen are prone to do (and there were no ladies riding at all), we all took lunch before having a crack at some standing quarters. I unveiled my magnificently painted CBR and eventually got a great launch with a best time of 12.4 seconds. More fun than being asked to head the Brazilian judging at university orientation. Flying quarters on the CBR next and this was where I learnt how woefully undergeared my banana coloured baby was. I had her beyond the red-line and pin-balling off the rev-limiter for a good kilometre before the speed trap. This delivered a speed of 197kmh. Koba had cracked 205 by this time and I had to try and reel him in.
No worries I thought, I have a 3 tooth smaller sprocket in the van that just might do the job. So, off I skive to realise my advantage. Changing sprockets dressed in black leather under the full glare of the mid-day sun is work best undertaken by serious men with black-ops experience. I gave it a go anyway and manged to get back to the start line for another flying quarter.
Made a great launch and could feel the longer legs in action so concentrated on trying to over-rev, but not bounce off the limiter. I was still maxed out way before the trap, but "that's got him" I thought. WTF! 195kmh? I obviously should have been harsher.
Not realising that I had made a MacDonalds breakfast of the CBR run, I got the Ape out for a standing quarter. What a larf! It felt like I was climbing all over the front of the bloody thing while trying to master the throttle. Even better than something better than judging brazilians. 11.34 seconds and now I want a drag bike.
The final run of the day was a flying quarter and I resolved to get the good tuck and hold the button down. I worked at tucking the elbows in, jammed my helmet under the screen and viewed the road through the screen like a distorted, insect smeared playstation game. Some weaving was experienced but I managed to hold it at around 10,000 revs in top. 10,500 is the rev-limiter. This was rewarded with a 254kmh speed through the trap. Stoked just doesn't describe it.:woohoo: The only other v-twin quicker was a TL1000R SP. My Ape has slightly lowered gearing than standard so I don't imagine it has a lot more to give so I'm not sure if I will bring it back.
But I want that 400 trophy....

Good report Clive and 12.4 quarter on the CBR is damned good. Guys my age were in awe with the Mach III when it was launched on the market with claims of that very number 12.4, but I never saw one beat 13 at the sprints I used to go to in Hawkes Bay.

great write up matey....
as you noticed, i didn't turn up, i didn't want to show up your Tuono...

oh and having to work had nothing to do with it....:bleh:

that AND knowing that it will only do 140miles/hr in top doesn't help...

and i didn't want to burst everyone's ear drums.....:doctor:

Go that man ....
Awesome penning Clive and sounds like really good clutch abuse as well.
Next time this event is on you will have to give me a call to motivate me and we can have a comp :spanking: between the 400 models.
I imagine you will win as " In your face yellow " is slipprier than boring old silver aye.
I used to do the Carterton sprints of days gone by and loved it on my CBX, and the Sawyers racebike NS 400.

I'm up for a bit of that, but I was planning on seeking some gearing advice from your direction. :soon: What with the slipperiness of my yellow peril you may be tempted to lead me astray.

Eh?!?! That Tuono has a massive fairing compared to the Hornet... esp at the $2.20 the 'net has done. You could light a candle behind that shelter at 254km/h!

Crack me up Malcolm. They are natural competitors. Next we will have to swap over to see if any of the difference is down to a willingness to suspend mechanical sympathy. There must be another 20kmh somewhere in that monster.

I'm up for it if you do it naked. But I wouldn't be surprised if all y'all necks have atrophied from hiding behind those pretty fairings and clip-ons. Now that I think about, don't get naked.

To be honest mate, its not much better/more comfortable at speed than the Hornet was (if you don't tuck anyway).

Clive what was the vmax reading on your dash? how far out was it to the offical speed?

merv
4th February 2008, 21:39
If by chance your bike is long legged enough and is still accelerating through the quarter the vmax will be better than the "official" figure which is an average only over the distance and sadly is therefore less than you really attained.

So the Busa showed 317 vs 313 didn't it on his GPS.

madmal64

Damn! Thats pretty accurate then. Only 3 kmh at that speed seems blardy good to me.

Actually.... I don't think there is too much more in it. The speedo stops at 260kph and I had the needle wound off past that (obviously approx 10% optimistic reading on the Ducati speedo). At Feb Sprints last year I did a 236kph on it so pretty sure that is as fast as she will ever go in its standard form. Although the S4RS has the 999 engine, the gearing is a lot shorter and I suspect that Ducati in their wisdom spec'd it to do a much lower max speed for the sake of safety considering the design eg naked, no steering damper, wheelbase etc. Having said that I am not sure the 999's have that great a top speed either. Best I ever did on my 996 was 255kph so I reckon your effort on the Tuono is very respectable and shows that both you and Aprilia have definitely got their shit together with respect to getting the best speed out of a naked bike. I havn't checked but you probably gave me a good seeing to in the Standing starts as well.

skelstar
4th February 2008, 22:10
Glad to hear Aprilia speedos are acurate. Just been reading about the top-speeds of the Mille over at apriliaforums and it seemed comfortably higher than the Tuono... but then factored in error. But .... :devil2:

He he , I dealt to Malcom's "Race" 749R last time on the flying ....... and have run the fastest 750 based Vtwin on the flying for the last 5 years in a row :headbang:

Of course , Malcolm's shorter track gearing might have had something to do with that.:shit:

BTW Flame , the little old 748R did 251.90 back in 2006, this can be your "s" target ......and you'll need to carry an extra 50kg of ballast for this to be a even contest. :apint:
