This is my second attempt at taking photos at a sprint day, went a little better this time.
Was a great day out, very very hot. Credit to the riders, they must of been cooking. Some impressive bikes and impressive speeds

They were a bit of a blur, but the chromed/polished one sticks out....

Should do, took just over 300 pics. Can you give me a little more detail about the riders/bikes so I can recognise them.
But the majority are not very well focused. It's difficult trying to get a bike moving at those speeds to pose nicely for the camera :(
If anyone else is curious just post you bike details. I will have a look in the next few days and post them up.

Interesting looking road, has it got quite a few humps and hollows in it?

Less than ideal conditions for photo's Nige but you did bloody well mate. You've captured the speed well.

Thanks Nigel for taking the time to take so many pics and post them up. Especially on such a HOT day with bugger all shade.
Excellent work that man.
I have to admit I like the one you got of my only 'accidental' wheelie of the day.

Nice one Nigel. Loving the ones of the Foster boys, Malc's and Troy's esp. Tough conditions for the camera to deal with, something that maybe faster glass cold cope with better?
I wonder if being further back and zooming would cure the focus thing (bigger depth of field), but then you would sacrefice the speed blur thing tho.

Would love a faster lense :weep:
I think being further back would help with the focus, it was pretty much on the limit where I was standing. But the road I was marshalling on made it difficult to get further away from the bikes, while maintaining the ability to pan and shoot.

Great photos of a great day
I had a fantastic time if a little disappointed with my flying times but it was all the bike would give.
Anyone know if the finial results are posted anywhere?

Some nice shots there.
Look for a Canon 70-200 F4 L on TradeMe.
What mode are you shooting in?
Those shots should have been in Ai Servo, TV mode, 1/320th to 1/640th and ISO100 (not ISO800) and you would have had a nice shallow depth of field with enough shutter to get a clear shot.
It would have brought the aperture down from f22 to f8 or so.
PS. Your camera is more betterer than mine...

Wow, its like you know the settings I was using.
I was on ISO800, so had an aperture of f20 to f22. All your other numbers and settings were spot on what I was doing.
I need to read up what all that means so next time I can do better.

If your panning then I reckon a shallow d-o-field is meaningless.
Could be wrong tho, I'm not expert.

With your lens you'll have more luck with complete side-on pans so the lens has a chance to lock on. With the 3/4 shots it has problems focussing fast enough.
I loved my cheapie Sigma 70-300 and it did some great shots but needed to be given a chance to acheive focus.
Also some colours are picked up quicker than others. A bike with some nice blue/white or black/white gives the camera more of a chance to pick up on the high contrast areas.
Get that ISO down to 100-200 and keep shooting :D

I tried a few manual focus efforts, but could not focus quick enough.
So I tried pacing the distance from the middle of the road to the fence beside the road, then focused on the fence manually and left the focus there, then paced back the distance between the fence and the middle of the road. This sort of worked.
I really want a 70-200 f2.8 L (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Electronics-photography/Camera-accessories/Lenses/Canon/auction-138572777.htm)

Esp for the $650 I got it on TradeMe.

I have only ever shot hand held for moving bikes, easier to pan, image stabilisation would help with this I am sure. I have taken photos with a tripod of standing bikes. Certainly makes for sharper pictures and I find it fun framing the picture doing this.
The Trade me price is for imported versions.
