View Full Version : Sad movies: tear-jerkers required

Got a TXT from my daughter last night. She's been seing a manly-man (he's a Personal Trainer - 'action man, sleep under the stars, go for a 20km stroll across the Remarkables for pleasure' type of guy). Anyway they were watching the movie 'Pay it Forward' last night and he finished up crying big man-tears ('crying like a big sooky la la' to use my daughter's words). Seems he can't handle sad movies.
So of course my daughter being the kind and empathetic girl she is is now racking her brains trying to come up with more and sadder movies for him to watch.
We came up with 'The Pursuit of Happines', The Notebook' and 'Ghost' but there must be a hundred other movies out there that could reduce a manly-man to a a quivering-lipped jelly fish ... so get naming them please ...

If you want a movie that is likely to fuck around with some stuff inside you I'd recommend "Requiem for a Dream". It's an interesting one - not a tear jerker - bound to make you think about where you are and what to be happy about.

Mmm, yes indeed. I was going to recommend it myself, but the original request was for 'tearjerkers', after all, and by the end of RFaD we don't really feel much for the protagonists beyond mild disgust.

Well, it's still one of the saddest movies I've seen. And I think it says a lot about human nature and self-deception... Don't know if feeling disgust for the protagonists is appropriate.

Despite what you and your daughter think - this man is not a manly-man as you quoted.
He cries in movies and therefore is either gay or has ovaries.
Id get him to watch Extreme Home makeover. Video him breaking down in tears and post it here on KB for us to have a good laugh at.

Saw III got quite emotional when the psycho-killer women shot the women with a shotgun necklace and then got sliced up by the girls husband with a circular saw.
And I know it been mentioned by Requiem for a Dream is real deep thought type movie, freaky stuff. sat around for like half an hour afterwards blankly.

Yep I watched it last night........ I thought when he did the 'deed' was really sad.....
Hilary Swank was blardy brilliant in 'Boys don't cry'...... she surely deserved her award in that film.
'Notebook' is sad....... and moving.
'One flew over the cukoo's nest' is another brilliant movie...... damn it was so sad near the end.
MASK damn great movie, it is so sad when Rocky died..... and how everyone reacted.... Cher was so fantastic in it. When the dude who never spoke, actually spoke. This movie was based on a true story. Loved the cruiser bikes in it too.
There are many movies no matter how many times you watch it and you know it is gonna be sad....... that it still gets you.
There is nought wrong with a fella showing his feeling and emotions.... even if it is over a movie...... maybe they see something from their past... or that they are sensitive inside.
Many guys walk out of movies wiping that bit of dust that got in their eye after watching a movie.

Dominion Post - "possibly the most overrated movie I know of. The unbelievable script, leaden and portentous directing, and unforgivably saccharine denouement somehow got this funeral march of a film into the Oscars ahead of Martin Scorsese's The Aviator, and pretty much forced "the academy" to give Scorsese his overdue statue for The Departed in 2007, ahead of Eastwood's superior Letters from Iwo Jima. Funny old world."
I'd agree that Morgan Freeman is a great actor, but Hilary Swank doesn't cut it with me, and Clint Eastwood may have been good at some stage in his career, but following movies like Play Misty for Me, he lost the plot a little.
Another vote for The Notebook though, great movie and my husband found it quite sad too.

WTF men don't cry, you people are a bunch of pussys.
the only place ive ever seen hardened bikers crying is at a bikers funeral. and i'm there doing the same.
a movie is not real though, it can be based on truth but in the end hollywood blows it out of proportion.
real life okay can shed a tear, but ffs it's a frikking movie.
listen too chopper....HTFU

schindler's list (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108052/) was one movie that made me have tears in my eyes... To End All Wars (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0243609/) was another if you have not seen it watch it its so brutal! I guess i find these movies so moving because they are based on true story's.To think human nature is capable of such just really gets to me.

The end of Lord of the Rings (3) Where Aragorn is crowned and kneels before the Hobbits .... and again when Frodo leaves on the ship........ Only time I ever cried in a cinema - still gets me...
Hehe, I must admit I got a big shiver down my back during the Charge of the Rohan! But yeah, there are some tear-jerking action going on as well - better HTFU! ;)
Gladiator makes me cry too, and Braveheart, it's sad when the hero dies.
FREEDOM!
Feel free to cry now :p
But yes, strong scenes in either film.
make him sit down and watch the whole TITANIC movie, its enough drivel to make any man cry.
3 hours of crap to sit thru to get to the boat sinking.........
I know i'd cry/scream/shout if the missus tried to make me watch it....
Yeah, I was about to say that people had forgotten the most Titanic of all the tear-jerkers. Cue Celine Dion...
Nah, that's just my girl. She's always looking for ways to make the boys cry, but she's a sweetie really and the boys all love her. Believe me!
I believe you - but I am very tempted to make some wildly inappropriate comment... But I can't bring myself to it - you being the father and all. ;)

Mark, wake the fuck up... If you're a fan you should know he's from Sweden. :tsktsk:
I know Europe is a bit confusing with all those countries and all - but Switzerland and Sweden are not even close... Shared characteristics:
1. They both begin with Sw
2. They both got money
3. They both got motorists who can actually drive/ride
4. They both got mountain
5. Ah fuck it, I can't be assed - I'll get you a map later...

despite its occasionally wooden dialogue and stilted acting it's still, even after 20 years, a social comment that saddens me

It's like Labyrinth with less dancing and more rape scenes. Which ironically also makes it a better movie. But a sad one.

Not a tear jerker but definitely one of the crappiest movies ever... starts out funny as feck but then just goes downhill from there real fast...
Supposedly a 'Black comedy' but I wouldn't even class it as that.
Never really liked his films but that RV was funny, this definitely aint.
